It had been many years since the Akatsuki has failed in their attempts to capture the Kyuubi spirit within Naruto. However, some of its members are still alie and are still trying to fulfill that mission. As time passed on, Naruto's control over the demon fox has slipped partially, allowing it temporarily escape into Konoha. But there has always been someone ther to stop it from finishing its past duties.
Basically, the surviving Akatsuki, including Itachi, Kisume, Sasori, and their leader (not sure of the name), are still trying to take Naruto for their own benefit.
