there are 12 himes... but for some reason I counted 13 himes. is that maid Fumi a hime? I saw her materialize that scythe... but no child. or am I counting 13 because I'm counting Alyssa as a hime?

Spoiler alert! Alyssa was a fake HiME. There should be total of 12 HiMEs, but there are 13 because of Alyssa. Remember the battle between Mai and Mikoto in the last episode in that weird place? Actually Mai should have beaten all the other HiMEs, Mikoto too, before she could even have got there. Because 11 pillars open the way there. And 11 pillars DID rise, because Alyssa lost too in ep 15, but there were still 2 HiMEs left.
Fumi IS a HiME, I think her child is Mashiro (Mashiro went away with Nagi when other childs disappeared too, in the last episode). I'm not sure about it, is Mashiro a child or not. But that is sure that Fumi is a HiME.
Also Nagi said in that one episode: "Now you've done it, you mere fake HiME." So, Alyssa is a fake HiME. If you count her, it makes total of 13. But I don't know why or how she is fake, is her child built up by humen (that would explain all the guarding and engineers around Alyssa) or something. Sorry for too long explaining. xd

I'd say you have it about right. To summarize...
Alyssa is a fake HiME because her child and her link to the child were created by the Searrs organization in an attempt to create a HiME of their own.
Fumi is a HiME. Her child was being used by Mashiro in order for her to participate in events. (Although it's always possible that was always the purpose of her Child... to be used by the previous winner...)

Actually, there are only 13. But Alyssa is the official "Fake" HiME. She's not real, Fumi is a HiME just maybe she's like mikoto, she doesn't really have a child. Well she does when she tagged around with Raito her "brother". He pretty much gave it to her. So what I remeber. If I am wrong, please be free to correct me. I've only seen the series once, and when I've seen somethingonly once, I don't rememeber that well. sweatdrop

hokay *cracks knuckles*
Highlight: 12 HiME. Alyssa was an artificial HiME (but still counted in the big scheme of things) making it a total of 13 HiME. That's why at the end, Mai was fighting Mikoto. Because in order to open up that gate, 11 pillars had to be raised... and the way they were raised were by eliminating the HiME one by one until there was one left standing. But because Alyssa was a fake HiME, she raised an extra pilliar - leaving 2 HiME left to duke it out.
Oh, Mikoto's child was Miroku.
Fumi's child was Mashiro.
Mind the spelling its 3am.
