Just thought it would be good to have a thread for the discussion of the meaning of lyrics.
What songs do you like for their lyrics? Why? How did it stir you or how did it relate with you? What is the song's meaning? What is your interpretation of it?
Just to get things going... For anyone who has heard of the song "Forensic Scene" by Fugazi, what do you think the song meant? (you can choose to talk about another song if you wish, this is just to start something if you can't think of anything)

The song "Bring on the Rain" by Jo Dee Messina. The lyrics go:
"Another day has almost come and gone Cant imagine what else could wrong Sometimes Id like to hide away somewhere and lock the door A single battle lost but not the war (cause)
Tomorrows another day And Im thirsty anyway So bring on the rain
Its almost like the hard times circle round A couple drops and they all start coming down Yeah, I might feel defeated, I might hang my head I might be barely breathing - but Im not dead
Tomorrows another day And Im thirsty anyway So bring on the rain
Im not gonna let it get me down Im not gonna cry And Im not gonna lose any sleep tonight"
The song means that life can sometimes be really hard and sometimes it seems like it just doesn't end. When you have one problem 8 follow and it can be really frusturating. But this songs says not to give up. When the chorus says "Im thirsty anyways, so bring on the rain" I think its saying that "Im not afraid and I can take it, so bring it on baby!!!"
I really like that message and it has helped me get through many many hard times.

Fighter - Christina Aguilera
After all you put me through, you think I'd despise you, but in the end, I wanna thank you because you make that much stronger!)
Well I, I thought I knew you, thinkin' that you were true Guess I, I couldn't trust called your bluff time is up Cause I've had enough You were there by my side, always down for the ride But your joy ride just came down in flames cause your greed sold me out in shame (uh mmm#0
After all of the stealing and cheating you probably think that I hold resentment for you But uh uh, oh no, you're wrong Cause if it wasn't for all that you tried to do, I wouldn't know Just how capable I am to pull through So I wanna say thank you Cause it
Chorus: Makes me that much stronger Makes me work a little bit harder It makes me that much wiser So thanks for making me a fighter Made me learn a little bit faster Made my skin a little bit thicker Makes me that much smarter So thanks for making me a fighter
( oh oh, oh oh, oh oh, oh oh oohhhhh aye aye yeah)
Never saw it coming, all of your backstabbing Just so you could cash in on a good thing before I'd realize your game I heard you're goin round playin, the victim now But don't even begin feeling I'm the one to blame Cause you dug your own grave After all of the fights and the lies cause you're wanting to harm me But that won't work anymore, no more, (oh oh no no) It's over Cause if it wasn't for all of your torture I wouldn't know how to be this way now and never back down So I wanna say thank you Cause it
Chorus:
Makes me that much stronger Makes me work a little bit harder It makes me that much wiser So thanks for making me a fighter Made me learn a little bit faster Made my skin a little bit thicker Makes me that much smarter So thanks for making me a fighter
How could this man I thought I knew Turn out to be unjust so cruel Could only see the good in you Pretended to not to see the truth You tried to hide your lies, disguise yourself Through living in denial But in the end you'll see YOU-WONT-STOP-ME
I am a fighter and I (I'm a fighter) I ain't goin' stop (ain't gonna stop) There is no turning back I've had enough (aaahhhhhh)
Repeat Chorus x2:
Makes me that much stronger Makes me work a little bit harder (oh oh oh yeah) It makes me that much wiser So thanks for making me a fighter Made me learn a little bit faster (ooh) Made my skin a little bit thicker (yeah yeah yeah yeah ) Makes me that much smarter So thanks for making me a fighter
Thought i would forget but I (ooohhh) I remember (oooohhh) 'Cus i remember (ooooohhhh) (x2) I remember
Makes me that much stronger (oh oh) Makes me work a little bit harder (oh oh) It makes me that much wiser(oh) So thanks for making me a fighter Made me learn a little bit faster Made my skin a little bit thicker Makes me that much smarter So thanks for making me a fighter

I'm not a huge fan of this band but I love this song.
It's called "At Your Funeral" from Saves The Day.
It just reminds me of one of my friends. He keeps on ******** up in life and he isn't taking it serious and I always tell him to straiten out and he doesn't listen to me.
"This song will become the anthem of your underground
You're two floors down getting high in the back room
If I flooded out your house do you think you'd make it out or would you burn up before the water filled your lungs?
And at your funeral I will sing the requiem
This song will become the anthem of your underground
You're two floors down getting high in the back room
If I flooded out your house do you think you'd make it out or would you burn up before the water filled your lungs?
And at your funeral I will sing the requiem
I'd offer you my hand it would hurt to much to watch you die
And you can bet when we mourn the death of you that night of you that night
They'll lay me on the dinner table I will be the pig with the apple in my mouth the food that celebrates your end
And at your funeral I will sing the requiem I'd offer you my hand it would hurt to much to watch you die
And at your funeral I will sing the requiem I'd offer you my hand it would hurt to much to watch you die"

''Join me in death'' - HIM..... Their has been a lot of controversy about this song, because when it came out, about 99.9% of the world thought it was incouraging suicide with the chorus saying ''baby join me in death''. The actual meaning of that is the singer (ville valo) is putting in term ''Are you so far in love with one person, you would do anything for them, including (death, or) dying with them, that they are that determined with that individual''

Probably Tomi Swick's Everything is Okay. I can relate to it because me and my best friend always seem to have trouble going on with us but no matter what things turn out okay.

"Good Enough" by Evanescence is one of the more... personally acurate songs on my ipod. Everybody has the right to finally feel good enough for this world. Some people just get to experience it earlier than others.

Children's Crusade by Sting. It's a good song. It's about the WWI and how people are uselessly sacrificing themselves with little hope; how it's not worth it. How people are stubborn, how too many people die for a stupid cause.
Young men, soldiers, Nineteen Fourteen Marching through countries they'd never seen Virgins with rifles, a game of charades All for a Children's Crusade
Pawns in the game are not victims of chance Strewn on the fields of Belgium and France Poppies for young men, death's bitter trade All of those young lives betrayed
The children of England would never be slaves They're trapped on the wire and dying in waves The flower of England face down in the mud And stained in the blood of a whole generation
Corpulent generals safe behind lines History's lessons drowned in red wine Poppies for young men, death's bitter trade All of those young lives betrayed All for a Children's Crusade
The children of England would never be slaves They're trapped on the wire and dying in waves The flower of England face down in the mud And stained in the blood of a whole generation
Midnight in Soho, Nineteen Eighty-four Fixing in doorways, opium slaves Poppies for young men, such bitter trade All of those young lives betrayed All for a Children's Crusade

WALTZING MATILDA (Austrailian Folk Song)
Once a jolly swagman sat beside a billabong, Under the shade of a coolibah tree, And he sang as he watched and waited 'til his billy boiled "Who'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me?"
Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda Who'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me And he sang as he watched and waited 'til his billy boiled "Who'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me?"
Along came a jumbuck to drink from the billabong, Up jumped the swagman and grabbed him with glee, And he sang as he stowed that jumbuck in his tucker bag, "You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me".
Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda Who'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me And he sang as he stowed that jumbuck in his tucker bag, "You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me?".
Up rode the squatter, mounted on his thoroughbred, Down came the troopers, one, two, three, "Where's that jolly jumbuck you've got in your tucker bag?" "You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me".
Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda Who'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me "Where's that jolly jumbuck you've got in your tucker bag?", "You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me?".
Up jumped the swagman, leapt into the billabong, "You'll never catch me alive," said he, And his ghost may be heard as you pass by the billabong, "Who'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me".
Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda Who'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me And his ghost may be heard as you pass by the billabong, "Who'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me?"
The song narrates the story of an itinerant worker making a crude cup of tea at a bush camp and stealing a sheep to eat. When the sheep's owner arrives with three police officers to arrest the itinerant worker, he drowns himself in a small lake and haunts the site. The lyrics contain many distinctively Australian words, some now rarely used in Australian English outside this song. These include: swagman the Australian equivalent of a hobo; a swagman is a romanticised figure who travelled the country looking for work, usually sporting a hat hung with cork to ward off flies. The swagman's "swag" was his bundle of belongings. waltzing derived from the German term auf der Walz, which means to travel while working as a craftsman and learn new techniques from other masters before returning home after three years and one day, a custom which is still in use today among carpenters. Matilda a romantic term for a swagman's bundle. See below, "Waltzing Matilda." Waltzing Matilda from the above terms, "to waltz Matilda" is to travel with a swag, that is, with all one's belongings on one's back wrapped in a blanket or cloth. The exact origins of the term "Matilda" are disputed; one fanciful derivation states that when swagmen met each other at their gatherings, there were rarely women to dance with. Nonetheless, they enjoyed a dance, and so they danced with their swags, which was given a woman's name. However, this appears to be influenced by the word "waltz", hence the introduction of dancing. It seems more likely that, as a swagman's only companion, the swag came to be personified as a woman. Another explanation is that the term also derives from German immigrants. German soldiers commonly referred to their greatcoats as "Matilda" supposedly because the coat kept them as warm as a woman would. Early German immigrants who "went on the waltz" would wrap their belongings in their coat and took to calling it by the same name their soldiers had used. billabong a stagnant pool found along the side of a river where eddies and directional changes of the water keep it from moving. coolibah tree a kind of eucalyptus which grows near billabongs. jumbuck a sheep. A "jombok" is a large, fluffy cloud that drifts across inland Australia. The Indigenous Australians, when they saw sheep for the first time, were reminded of jomboks and called them a similar word. An alternative explanation is that it is an Aboriginally pronounced "jump up." billy a can for boiling water in, usu. 2-3 pints. tucker bag a bag for carrying food ("tucker"). troopers policemen. squatter Australian squatters started as early farmers who raised livestock on land which they did not legally have the right to use, but in many cases later gained legal use of the land even though they did not have full possession and became wealthy thanks to their large land holdings.

The song because of you by kelly clarkson is very meaningful to me because its about kelly's childhood and how she was abused from a young age. I haven't been abused but my parents are divorsed and it has produced a very hard time the past few years... with new people etc.. but you prolly dont need or want to know about my problems

Nickelback - If Today Was Your Last Day This song if just saying that if today was your last day what would you do? Live each second like your last because you never know when it's too late & you don't get a second try. And each days a gift, so don't take it for granted 'Cause you can't rewind a moment in this life. Live life the way you want to. Call old friends even if you never see them, tell your loved ones you love them. Don't let go of the ones you love. Because you never know if you'll end up never seeing them again. My best friend gave me the best advice He said each day's a gift and not a given right Leave no stone unturned, leave your fears behind And try to take the path less traveled by That first step you take is the longest stride
If today was your last day and tomorrow was too late Could you say goodbye to yesterday? Would you live each moment like your last? Leave old pictures in the past Donate every dime you have? If today was your last day
Against the grain should be a way of life What's worth the prize is always worth the fight Every second counts 'cause there's no second try So live like you'll never live it twice Don't take the free ride in your own life
If today was your last day and tomorrow was too late Could you say goodbye to yesterday? Would you live each moment like your last? Leave old pictures in the past Donate every dime you have? Would you call old friends you never see? Reminisce of memories Would you forgive your enemies? Would you find that one you're dreamin' of? Swear up and down to God above That you finally fall in love If today was your last day
If today was your last day Would you make your mark by mending a broken heart? You know it's never too late to shoot for the stars Regardless of who you are So do whatever it takes 'Cause you can't rewind a moment in this life Let nothin' stand in your way Cause the hands of time are never on your side

Alanis Morissette - Everything
I feel that I can really relate to this. I can be very moody at times. It also really describes the kind of love I want, totally trust and acceptance between two people.
"You see everything, you see every part You see all my light and you love my dark You dig everything of which I'm ashamed"
Here's the lyrics~
I can be an a*****e of the grandest kind I can withhold like it's going out of style I can be the moodiest baby and you've never met anyone who is as negative as I am sometimes
I am the wisest woman you've ever met. I am the kindest soul with whom you've connected. I have the bravest heart that you've ever seen And you've never met anyone Who's as positive as I am sometimes.
You see everything, you see every part You see all my light and you love my dark You dig everything of which I'm ashamed There's not anything to which you can't relate And you're still here
I blame everyone else, not my own partaking My passive-aggressiveness can be devastating I'm terrified and mistrusting And you've never met anyone as, As closed down as I am sometimes.
You see everything, you see every part You see all my light and you love my dark You dig everything of which I'm ashamed There's not anything to which you can't relate And you're still here
What I resist, persists, and speaks louder than I know What I resist, you love, no matter how low or high I go
I'm the funniest woman you've ever known. I am the dullest woman you've ever known. I'm the most gorgeous woman you've ever known And you've never met anyone as, as everything as I am sometimes.
You see everything, you see every part You see all my light and you love my dark You dig everything of which I'm ashamed There's not anything to which you can't relate And you're still here
And you're still here And you're still here...
