I don't know if there's another thread for this all ready, and I apologize if there is. Many witches have familiars, but what distinguishes them from mere household pets? If a witch has a cat or a dog or a lizard, what makes that animal different from any other cat or dog or lizard in the world? How do you know when you've found your familiar? Is it possible for your familiar not to be your own pet? The reason I ask this is a series of dreams I've been having starring a neighborhood cat who I'm sure I've mentioned. He is, rightfully, my neighbor's cat, but he would rather live, it seems, on my front porch, making his home in the shrubberies and bushes, stealing his way inside when he has the chance. I can't bring him inside because of our other cats and animals, but he seems okay to sit outside and wait for me to come out each day. A few days back, he found his way into my backyard so that when I went to let the dogs out, I saw his bright green eyes peering in, contemplating his way inside. All I could do was take my tea outside so he could sit on my lap while I drank, but I wish I could bring him in. ...and I've had a lot of strange dreams about him lately. Early in the misty morning, he leads me through labyrinthian gardens in seemingly impossible landscapes and pink fog...Like Alice's proverbial White Rabbit, he guides me hurriedly to my destination, usually some ancient ritual or rite I am to perform which others are trying to keep me from. What sucks is that he isn't my cat, and I'm not allowed to bring him in, as much as I'd like to. When I move, if he's still alive (he's older than I originally though), I'll bring him with me, but until then I have to be outdoors to visit him.
Any insight, anyone?

When I move, if he's still alive (he's older than I originally though), I'll bring him with me, but until then I have to be outdoors to visit him. Any insight, anyone? I have one feline familiar--he is very unusual, comes when he's called, stuff like that. He caught a bird once and was halfway through the door when I told him he couldn't come inside with it, so he backed up a few paces with it, then sat down and did his cat thing. He is the sweetest thing, and of all my witchy books, he seems to like Evolutionary Witchcraft by T. Thorn Coyle best. He likes sleeping on the witchy bookshelf, and if I tell him I'll see him at four, he'll be waiting for me. My other cat we thought would be my familiar, but she is less so. She sure LOOKS the part, black and orange brindled tortie with BIG green eyes and a crook in her tail. She, however, is a bit more egotistical than the other--her voice easily rivals a siamese in volume, which is no easy feat. I also have a five-month puppy who I am still unsure of, though her manners are very good for such a young pup. (her "sister", my own sister's dog, is an absolute terror, though she's near a year older.) You can be a witch and have two dozen cats and eight dogs, and not have a single familiar, likewise you can have a familiar that is yours, even is it might not be so on paper (goes without saying that the legal owners are indeed that--no animal abductations! biggrin ). I currently have three pets, but only one of which participates in magic with me, at this point in time. There are certain characteristics that tend to set familiars apart from "normal" household creatures. Familiars tend to be more in sync with their Witch, they tend to really "get" each other. Sometimes you can just tell if one is or isn't familiar "material". They typically "understand" you when you speak to them. In conclusion....... Sounds like you've got yourself a helper! ^.^ He seems familiar-natured to me! Besides, if he is older, he'll have seen more and know more, in all likelyhood, and all the better for you.

It's strange sometimes how soothing he can be...there's a strange opiate effect to his presence, even when it's just watching him lay on the pavement in the sun. His owners don't let him inside anymore, opening only a small window to their basement. They don't put out food or water, so he's on his own. For all practical purposes, he's a feral, albeit a friendly one. There was one point when he was very horridly ill and we had to take him to the vet because his owners refused to believe the problem. ...I guess having one-point-three kids will do that to people...The way I see it, if they can neglect him like that, and he makes it a point to follow me into my house at least once a week, he should be coming with me, where he can get the respect and attention he deserves. I might have all ready posted this picture, but here he is, on my front lawn. ...and both of us...I look horrid in this picture, but it's a nice one of him. My camera did something funky with the light...

Agreed, I can curse them too, if you want. xd As it stands, just keep him, I say. OR report them for animal abuse. God knows what they do to their kids if they treat the family pet like that... Awww what a cute little kitty. Why not ask them if you can take the cat with you. Maybe they wont mind if they dont care for it.
I have a cat named Albe, he is more my mums fimiliar than me, he follows her everywhere and wont leave her side when their both in the house and awake lol. [My cat even sleeps on her at night] However when ever I bring out my witch stuff to read or to write on my BOS he finds it funny to come in and sit all over my stuff so I can't read or write and just looks at me with a cute little face lol xd

I may very well ask if I can take him with me, but I'd rather wait until the time comes as I'm not quite ready to move yet. I still need to...err...build up funds. ...like, by getting a job. sweatdrop As for reporting them, my family works in an animal rescue group, and we've done our fair share of trapping and re-releasing, or catching and adopting out. In fact, most of our own animals are adopted: one of our cats, Cricket, was found in a tomato garden, who we took home and my father ended up falling in love with; Tink, our newest dog, was from an abusive home which a friend of ours took him out of--had the owner pressed charges, they would have been charged with animal abuse anyway, so they let it drop. I don't think they cared anyway. --but I'd probably ask first, since I really don't think they'd care. he's never home, anyway.

I read in one of my books somewhere that all animales are considered familiars as long as you take the time to learn from them what thay have to teach you.

Violent_D I read in one of my books somewhere that all animales are considered familiars as long as you take the time to learn from them what thay have to teach you. I tend to see that all animals are helpers willing to teach, but that familiars are more of a physical aid for the Witch, an animal companion to which there is a very, very, very special/unusual bond with.

I'd say that sounds pretty accurate. You really have to "click"...you can click with plenty of animals, but it's like...dating someone, and then marrying someone, you know? There's a different sort of bond there, that you didn't have before...

i had a cat that looked like that his name was Mr.Sexy. i have had him for years my mother in law was taking care of him till i could come get him. he spent about a year a way from me before he died. i think he died from missing me. that is if that makes any sense. that cat was my baby i miss him so. he would use the toilet, open doors, him and i would sit and have conversations, and when ever i was sad or what ever he knew. he would follow me all over the place. he died this past october, and i still miss him. and at times i feel bad like i let him down. (i know its kinda off but anyone got any advice onhow to get past this?)
