I posted this in the diagnosis thread, but thought it might do better on its own:

I'm looking for some help gonk I posted this in the intro as well 3nodding

I'm 22 and joined this guild out of curiousity: I'd like to find some help as well as offer it. My problem is in the way of eating disorders. When I was 4 I distinctly remember walking into the kitchen and feeling something click or shift in my brain. I "decided" that I would only eat certain foods. Since that childish "choice", everything smelled disgusting. It wasn't even me being a bratty kid. I just physically couldn't eat anything that others thought was delicious. It's still a major problem and I'm still eating oddly. I survived since it happened at such an early age. My body thought the malnutrition was normal (don't misunderstand, I don't eat less quantity, just less variety). I also take lots of vitamins to make up for the loss of nutrients. But I'm getting married and I want to eventually have a baby (as in within 2 years). I don't want the baby to have major problems because of something I can't willingly change. If anyone can offer some advice, I'd be happy to talk about it. I just "came out of the closet" with this issue. It was really hard to go through school being ridiculed because of my diet choices (also my parents thought that threats and humiliation were the best cure).

So what do I do? I can't seem to find a nutritional psychologist near me stressed

I don't really understand. Can you please explain this in more detail? I have not heard of an eating disorder that causes you to avoid specific types of food, only the ones that cause you to not eat enough, over eat, or to throw up what you have eaten. This could just be my own ignorance, of course.

Also, I'm impressed that you remember an incident from such a young age so clearly. Do you recall if there was anything that caused this "click" in your brain? You don't have to share it, if you don't want to.

I don't mind. Like I said, I'm just "coming out of the closet" on it, so I'd love to get some input.

Well I've been trying to get in to see a nutritional psychologist with no luck. I don't know where to look on information since I'm not anorexic, and I'm not referring to buhlemia.

Just being a child I remember walking into the kitchen, being annoyed with my overbearing mom, and thinking that I was only going to eat my favorite food (grilled cheese sandwiches) forever. I guess you could say I decided it was one of the only things I had control over so I grabbed it. After that everything seemed to smell disgusting. When my fiance the chef makes his dinner, we usually have to sit far apart to eat together because the smell turns my stomach. I can't even imagine trying anything he makes.

Let's see... I started with grilled cheeses and macaroni. Then it was just grilled cheese. Now my diet consists of mostly carbs:
- At home: I eat junk food, bacon, cheese, bread, orange juice. That's it.
- At pizza places: I scrape the topping off to eat the pizza and won't touch it if it's had anything besides pepperoni and cheese on it
- At burger joints: I only eat french fries
- At dine in restaurants: I will always get a grilled cheese

Sad, huh?

Like I said, I'd like to have a baby within the next 2 years (don't worry, I'll be married), and I don't think my body could properly support a child. I don't want the child to have any defeciencies either. So what's wrong with me? Anyone know any websites that might be able to help me?

I would just go to a general practitioner. Go to your family doctor and ask them about it. They can make referrals and find people with this specialty a lot faster than you can. Sometimes it's hard trying to find what you want when you really don't know what you need. So, I'd suggest going to a general practitioner so he/she can make the best way for you to get to one of those people.

it could be a form of anxiety in which cognitive behavioural therapy could help but i agree with ares...go to your doctor and talk to them...and make sure you take multivitamins

Yeah, for sure go to a general practitioner first. It's amazing how deficiencies can start a cascade of physical problems that can cause bad habits. The solution might be far easier than you think! You'd better start as soon as possible so that you can have stable eating habits for a good long while before you become pregnant.

I take plenty of vitamins, dont' worry wink My only problem with going to my family doc is the nosy and rude nurses that work there. When I feel worse about the problem, I feel like I'm falling further away.

I started making a journal about how I feel around food and my reactions, etc. Also, I was at a local hospital today (2 months from the wedding and the fiance broke his foot!!) and found some dieticians and nutritionists, so maybe that will be a good start.

Don't they say habits take 28 days to form? This is a 20 year habit stressed Yikes.

Anxiety? I used to have panic attacks that I repressed, but I dunno. We'll find out soon enough!

I may sound old-fashioned on this situation, but I say the cure for you pickiness is to buff up and eat a variety of foods. Ever heard of the trick of plugging your nose to muffle that taste of a bad food? It was real easy for me to eat a variety of foods. I started eating only fried chicken and fried potatoes. Then for some reason, I ate more and more kinds of foods. I used to think marinara sause was disgusting, then I eventually just ate it. Marinara sauce is a very delicious topping on meat, breads, and pasta.

My suggestion: If you can, travel to a faraway, exotic place where there isn't a grilled cheese sandwich in thousands of miles. Then, you can try some foods you've never seen before.

If you can't afford the vacation, then just leap into eating a variety of foods. It doesn't feel as bad when you cannonball into a cold pool rather then slow crawl in it, so tomorrow, back off the cheese, bread, and frying pan! Go to your grocery store, and get all sorts of different kinds of foods. You don't feels sick when walking through a grocery store, don't cha? smile

Like Stevo said, just buckle yourself down and eat new types of food. Maybe if you force yourself to eat new types of food over and over you will get use to. If you truely want to start eating right for your soon to be baby and rid that crud Pickiness you had since childhood. Maybe you should use that as your inspiration to eat right for your baby. Everytime you about to eat your regular cheese sandwich and such, think about your baby that you soon have to support.
Well hope you can rid that childhood pickness and start eating right. Also I hope you have a happy wedding and marriage. blaugh
