Unfortunately I don't know all that much about Jazz. All I know about Jazz is that the bass is very technical.

Well if you look at the fundamentals of Jazz, the early jazz cats just played. So personally I think all you need is a decient musical knowlage. So know your instrument, and where to make your notes. Other than that its mostly just a jam. At least thats how it should be in my mind. Check out Jaco Pastorious, he's dead now, but he was insane, did crazy stuff on his bass. You can buy some books and videos of his licks and stuff. Also check out Victor Wooten. That man has inspired me to get insane finger strenght.

Ooo. *Steals link*
Any idea what it would take me to make jazz band for my school? I've not played with people very much yet (Was in one band that was too ******** up, and the lead/other guitarist (Boyfriend and girlfriend of course. rolleyes ) never showed up, so I only played with the drummer... But that's all I really need. domokun Then I was kicked out of two bands before they even gave me a chance to play a note. rolleyes I did play a couple songs with my old school's band. Nothing complex, though.), and I've been playing ~9 months...
I'm just wondering what kind of skills it might take to get in period, and what might be expected of me if I do make it?

Well, most jazz bands that are linked to the music program for the school usually have the typical requirements of being able to read music as well possessing some sightreading ability. Other than that, I imagine they would help teach you the rythms, signatures and all the other fun stuff inbetween I personally never joined mine old school's jazz band as I didn't really like the director, but of course, that's just me.

The guy we had was some hardcore german-ish guy who would drift off into a story anytime, anything happened. (Example: "You missed a B flat, I remember the first time I missed a B flat, yaada yaada blah...") Really annoying I say. biggrin

well if you want to know about the good ol' stand up its pretty simple, same thing just frettless and different tone. but with electric and stand up just walking lines, it's very organized and you want to constantly look at what key you're in, so if you mess up on the writen part you know what to fall back on untill you get back up. if you're trying to know how to play and stuff, just try to play lightly, so crank the volume and bass and make every note count (try not to get frett buzz!!!) i like to use the schools American Fender Precision bass though it is an 80's p-bass treated like crap!
