I have a really bad back. Something about some disks that are barely even there, and the others are all stressed, and I'm practically a medical miracle because I'm not in a wheelchair and climb trees, blah blah blah.
Suffice it to say, my back is really bad, and my hamstrings are really tight. I can't practice for longer than 45 minutes to an hour, often less than that, before my back and arms and legs become so pain filled that I have to stop. And I really want to be able to play longer! I've made it pretty far on less than an hour a night, so with more practice, I could go even further!
I've tried sitting down while playing, I do yoga and DDR in the morning, and I've tried playing for ten minutes longer every subsequent night for a week.
Any suggestions would be welcomed! heart

Buy "Playing (less) Hurt" by Janet Horvath. It's an excellent book about Injury Prevention. Analyze the way you play. What's your posture like? Do you hyper extend your wrists or anything else? Is your neck in a funny position?
You can buy it on Amazon for about 20 dollars or so. It's an excellent book, and its helped me and my two roommates so much! My roommate Cassie plays the bass, and being on the small side, she has developed tendonitis and back problems. Anyway, I would recommend this book for anybody! It's an excellent resource to have.
Another thing you can do is try practicing in smaller intervals spread out through the day instead of all at once.
If your back is having disc problems, it's might be your posture that's causing the problem.
Good luck. I hope this helps. wink

A combination of a disease and moderate CPS kept me from playing for longer than a half an hour when I first had it, then last year they let me play for an hour, and now I can finally play for up to three hours a day. As far as suggestions... I think what you are doing is probably the best solution. Keep it up! Just remember that if you start to feel pain, take a break and go back to it later. There's nothing that says you have to do a block of 45 minutes. You could do say, five ten minute sessions. Break it down in to little chunks.

Hmm, I've never had a bad back before so I really wouldn't know what to do about that, have you asked your doctor maybe? Or you could try getting a massage on your spine, that always loosens things up. Other then that I'de say just try your hardest and you'll eventually find a way around the problem 3nodding

Thanks for your suggestions, and I'm really sorry I haven't posted in forever... I forgot I had even made this topic. sweatdrop
I'm now up to two hours a night, which is a definite improvent. The massage idea is great, I'll have to look into that. Breaking the practice down is also good. I'd heard that before, but never thought of it as a solution to the problem!
I think your problem was worse than mine, TarienRose. I just have over excitable doctors.
And dotUMBER.... Piggy rocks. That has nothing to do with violin, but he does.

Maybe you stand wrong. I got pain in my neck if I hold it wrong. Maybe you get pain in your back when you (I don't know how to say...) press your sholder up or something. I do that also sometimes. It's just an idea, but maybe it's the solution.

These doctors are crazy. Now they say I never had CPS, just that the place in my wrist swelled for no reason. Since it went away, I don't have it. Smart people. I just changed the way I held my books when I read. I used to hold my right shoulder up and very tensely. Never noticed until my teacher forcibly held it down. Weird thing was that when I finally started relaxing it I experienced more pain than when I held it up. I'm over that now, though. Time, I guess.

Same thing as when I learned to play sideways; my thumb was perpetually under the instrument, and my elbow was twisted all the way around, even in first position (that's what I get for trying to teach myself domokun ) and when I was learning to correct it, it hurt really badly. Now, my elbow hurts if I even try to get it around that far.

Yeah the intervals work. I usually only practice about an hour at a time, but I practice 3 or 4 times a day. I also stretch my arms and my neck every 15 minutes.
...It might sound kinda wierd, but when my back starts hurting I find a place with carpet and sink into the splits and practice that way. It somehow keeps my back straight and it also feels good to stretch my legs after standing in place for a while.

I can't do the splits at all. Not even close... it's a nice idea, though.
