Ever since I have decided that I am a Satanist, a couple friends have disowned me as a friend when they found it out. *Sigh*. that just goes to show how stupid and closed minded some people really are. They wouldnt even give me the chance to explain myself. Oh well. I can always make new friends.

So, I guess I was just wondering, have any of you had this happen to you? Where friends/family members/ anyone turn their back on you once they found out you were satanist?

Well, no one turned their back on me really, but I have had people tell me I'm being stupid. They don't understand what Satanism is about, and believe I'm worshiping evil. I've tried to explain to them what my religion is really about, but so few want to listen. Strangely, this has mainly been atheists, which I find amusing, since I would say a slim majority of Satanists don't actually believe in Satan. But ignorance reign’s supreme amongst the general populace.

Anyway, if they were going to reject you over you being a Satanist, I would say there not really good friends in the first place, though I'm sure your well aware of that. wink

All my friends were fine with it, my mom is a b***h to this day about it, she saw the alter i have in my house and almost went apeshit and destroyed it until I reminded her that it's my house and I can kill as many goats as Satan makes me without her consent.

Wow. I dont think my parents know that I am a satanist and if thats true, I want to leave it that way. I think they may have a clue that I am, because when I hear generalizations about satanists from the media, I always say how wrong they are about it.

You know that thing you do when your a teen and your mom finds porn/pot/pack of smokes in your room? and you say "I dunno, that's not mine" Don't try that with Satanic alters in your house when she comes to visit.

Yeah, true. But if its your house, you shouldnt have to come up with excuses or ways to explain it. I would just say that this is my house and I will do what I want.

I'm not one to talk much about being a Satanist unless an honest discussion of religion arises. My flatmates know that I am, my mother is still blissfully unaware, and of course, my girlfriend knows. All three of my flatmates are fine with it, two of them being Catholic, and the other being agnostic and rather indifferent about any kind of religion...

So no, no disownment as of yet. I figure it's not worth it to share if it will compromise a valued bond.

the way it was explained to me "I'm still your mother and your still my son, I just don't want anything BAD to happen to you, I dont like all this meditation and yoga and demons and whatever you do in this house"

I left out the part where she said my wife should be ashamed.

well, only my mother knows, she didn't really freak out. I was grateful for that, my mom can be..very scary and life-threating dangerous sometimes, the only thing she wanted me to do is to study about islam, 'cause that is what I should actually belive in, 'cause she is, or something like that.

that makes me remember. In school when I started using pretty much black clothing people asked me if I was a satanist, I didn't really know what it was then and asked them, they said it was about worshiping the devil, so I said no, so now it will probably be pretty messed up..

I'm not a Satanist, though I am quite interested. Funnily enough, a conversation about LeVey Satanism arose in my D&D game today, when there was me, an interested satanism enthusiaist; a practicing LaVey Satanist, and an ex LaVey Satanist. None of us knew about any of the others studying it or being interested in it untill this day.

Given that, I don't think most of my friends would care. We're just not the kind of people who do I guess. My boyfriend knows I've been reading about it, he doesn't care.

I moved away from my parents before I started looking these things up, and I never visit them/they never visit me, and it's not like it's something I bring up in conversation, I mean, I'm not even a Satanist, it's like some guy trying to tell people how he read the bible for the first time ever, sure, it may be very nice for him, but I don't wanna hear it.

My mother is a kind of miscellaneous pagan, and I don't think she cares for Satanism in either the theistic or atheistic forms, it would most likely be another thing for us to disagree on. ^^

My friends either don't know or don't care... some of them think it's "cool", and "rebellious"... Doesn't matter to me. Out of a select circle of my really close friends are: A wiccan; I could not disagree with this guy on anymore things than I already do. I just find his morals too weak, and forgiving; however, I'm still best of buddies with him. Also, a fellow friend of mine who's interested in Satanism, and has borrowed my Bible. His parents found it though, and they weren't too happy. He claims to be a Satanist now, but he doesn't seem to do much about it. (ie, no change in opinions or anything) My parents are still -- I think anyway -- unaware of my theocratic decisions, which I find rather impressive, as I leave my Bible in plain sight in my room, and wear an inversed pentacle necklace. (My mom's comment when she first saw it was rather comical; something along the lines of whether it was some deep message or just a random trinket; her actual intent was knocking on the odd fashion sense of kids these days.)

Then there's always non-friends; I've learned that no matter how much the church likes to lie, it might be the truth that my school -- despite being a catholic one -- is actually very accepting. Back at the end of last year I did a presentation for my world religions course about my religious beliefs... Unfortunately, not many people showed up for it, since it was the last day before exams; Nevertheless, I expected reactions to be unkind: Maybe stupid generalisation questions, or false accusations of me being a "evil child" or something. But to my surprise, even the most hardcore of catholics in the class asked something at least decent, such as "How long have you been into this?", or "How did you get into it to begin with?" Other students expressed interest in my philosophy and even hung out with me for the entire day to discuss how it is. My teacher also didn't seem phased, and here I was expecting her to whip out the torches or something to that effect. She didn't comment or ask questions though; she just said "Very nice presentation!"

So I guess I should consider myself lucky that my philosophies and beliefs have not lost me anything of importance thus far... Wait, no I shouldn't; that's how it should be to begin with. rolleyes
