xd Though I never had the benefit of having one, (graduated 2003) it seems my home town is starting to get with the times. I went to a meeting last year at my old HS to see what it was like, and...frankly I was a little disappointed. Mosty girls and a few boi's, (and their hags) its a shaky start for them. I was sad to see the teacher sponsoring the club seemed more interested in her papers than helping them get anywhere. I made my observations to them, and the teacher jumped on me saying "well they're student and need to get their district approval on anything they do" things like "this school's lucky they can even start having a club like this". The questions posed had to do with putting mere posters on the wall at school so they could start having fundraisers. stare I think district approval is a pathetic excuse second to only when LGBT students have to sue the district to get them to act on complaints of harassment. stressed Anyway, just looking to get views, ideas of how to help my Alma Matter. (however that's spelled) sweatdrop

At the risk of sounding like an idiot, what is a GSA?

I think its a hard thing to do... because most kids in HS are very scared to stand up (not for there rights.. but for there sexual orientation rights).. so i think that kids need to be more independent and stand up for what they believe in. .. I think the best thing GLBT students can do is complain, complain, complain, report, report, and report. You have to get it through the board of educations mind that GLBT students are just as equal. And by doing what they are doing.. its going against what the country is (SUPPOSINGLY) all about.. (freedom) -thinks of president bush- -gags then pukes-

We have a lot of gay and Bisexual people in My HS. But we still get picked on and yelled at from cars. Its kind of scary really to walk through the halls and see everyone staring at you.

We have a pretty active GSA at my school. Me and another transguy are co-captaining it this upcoming year. Last year we had about 30 people coming in the first few weeks, but like all clubs it dwindled down, to about 10 to 15 people by the end of the year. Still pretty strong. We did things like the Day of Silence, and put up posters on the Transgender Day of Remembrance (which also happens to be my birthday surprised ), as well as just discussed issues, both political and personal.

We had a few boys at the start of the year, but by the end it was just me and the other FTM, and the occasional guy dropping in and out. sweatdrop It got to the point where one of the coordinators was asking us to recruit boys. Gay boys don't seem interested, and while our school is less homophobic than most, straight boys rarely want to be associated -- although there were quite a number of straight boys apparently seriously participating in the Day of Silence.

Would anyone find it out of place to have alumni come together to help build a school's GSA? Just more to the fact of offering scholarships and donating money and stuffs? I have a feeling students would want to do it if they had "family" support coming from the outside. mrgreen

Personally no, I don't think it would be out of place. Offering scholarships is a little much, but otherwise it sounds good.

We have a GSA at my school. It's about 30 members which is pretty good.
This past year, we got tons of people to participate in Day of Silence, No Name calling week, and I can't remember the other one we had.
It was good, we also had movie nights.
Next year won't be the same without some of the seniors that graduated. But we'll get new members.
I didn't tell my parents that what i was staying for. I told them I was going to film club, which I would have gone to if they weren't on the same day.
We don't have too many people yelling obscen things or anything.
There are a few closed minded people, but no one pays them too much attention. Seeing how the stars of our girls basket ball team, are gay. The student body president is bisexual. So it's cool
Plus, being in a school 70% girls you can't be too surprised.

In my school anythign like GSA wouldn't even be approved. Being gay is NOT okay there. I usted to get herassed all the time when peopel found out I had a girlfrined. I even had trash thrown at me.. I wish we had a large enough group of people to do something like that.

We have one at my school. It started out really small, apparently, I hadn't joined yet at the time. But by the end of the school year, there were about 15 of us. Two boys.

Our school is really pretty good, though. Our Vice President of the Student Council is an open lesbian, and everybody seems to be okay with her. Of course, if she were straight, she'd probably have made president, but... yeah. Still.

You know, they can't really ban anything. it's your right as a public/private school student to have the GSA. And don't believe falculty that say having the club would mean someone could have their own neo nazi club at school. It doesn't equate. And like wise, I know it'd mean a night in jail- but I'd be happy to knock some heads for anyone in this guild. Find the instigator of the hate, and just grope 'em. But I digress, stare I take family matters too seriously sometimes.

Public only, dude... private schools have the right to stop any club from meeting during school hours or on school property.
