Samurai X was pretty violent. So were various parts of Trigun that involved Legato.

Eh, you had to be paying close attention to understand what was going on in Akira, but there definitely was a lot of violence. Just the point while Tetsuo's power was still awakening, when he was leaving his room in the research type place was enough to kick in the R rating. He blew those people into the walls so thoroughly that that exact portion of the floor, walls, and ceiling was cracked, bathed in blood, and even had a hand oozing off the ceiling.

Neon Genesis Evangelion- was extremely gory, while I didn't quite enjoy it, it did set me thinkinga bit...

I think I'll just take the time to note now that Adult Swim doesn't do violence cutting. That's Toonami's job. Adult swim mainly does edits for language and explicit adult themes; about the only violence cut I've seen them do thus far was in Full Metal Alchemist, when Scar was exploding the Iron Blood alchemist's brain, and even then I'm not positive, but it definitely seems it. x_o
*Returning to subject* According to what I've heard from a friend, Apocalyse Zero is a very violent anime. She also told me the amounts of blood and organs coming out of people's bodies was ridiculous, and that the main villain didn't seem to have a definite gender. She said it's a very bad anime besides. *blinks*
