Well Mimiru and BlackRose are both annoying, but Rose wins out anyday for being more capable.
Between Tsukasa and Elk... I have a really hard time deciding. I adore them both, but in the end I'd probably go with Tsukasa. He's a bit less of a goody-goody and doesn't constantly prattle about one character, or a single item.
Orca definately wins over Bear though. Just... hands down. Not even going to explain that one.
I like BT more than Gardina. Something about Gardina just kind of ticks me off... the whole... "Fanclub" thing.
And I'm a big fan of Subaru. She's cute in the way that a little tottery kitten is. Precious and vulnerable, but you know there are some claws there somewhere.
So there you go. ^.^ All in all, I like the game better than the series.

Blackrose, I mean, she fought along with Kite against all that horrible bugs.
Elk, Tsukasa doesn't fight at all, just relied on that thing with a ring. (or "bracelet").Elk, on the other hand, can just go in and cast magic, plus Elk is a man!
Orca, I agree with Eyes. I'm not even going to bother.
Gardenia, Long Arms vs. Wavemaster... If a wavemaster solos, the result is obvious.
Terajima Ryoko, she starts from level 1 in Outbreak and manages to level close to Kite. Let's not forget the size of her axes. Giant Weapon>Girl that talks talks talks talks talks.
Yeah, none of the victors are from .hack//SIGN... ^^;
But I mean, they actually FIGHT. Unless the players from .hack//SIGN can bore someone to death like the owl from Zelda (annoying...).

Mimiru for being more level-headed.
Tie between Tsukasa and Elk. Both are adorable!
Neither for Bear or Orca... I don't usually like the "mentor" characters.
Gardenia for being flat-out awesome.
Subaru for have better character.

Mimiru - Black Rose just gets on my nerves more. :/
Tsukasa - Elk is a little annoying.
Bear - bear is cool
Gardina - anything but BT. I can't stand BT.
Subaru - i dunno.. xD
all and all i prefer the series much more than the games.

mimiru vs blackrose = both keep taking shots at each other until the universe explodes. 3nodding
tsukasa vs. elk = tsukasa winning because he could probably trick elk, who is too kind hearted.
bear vs. orca = probably a tie on that one too. they'ed settle things out on good terms.
bt vs. gardenia = gardenia cause she'd sick her rabid fandom on poor bt. D':
subara vs. terajima ryoko = subara cause terajima is just a cluts. DX

GAH. They're both the same in my book. Though... I think Mimiru is cooler. xd

mimiru (more experienced, season shows a last episode which touched me)
tsukasa, i agree cuz elk is way to kind hearted for his own good
id say bear, he is an old guy yeah but hey, in that game the ppl with teh higher lvl and more experience can win
BT cuz she has defencive magic sand strong spells and magic can quite often conquer attacking
and subaru, teragima ryoko is just... yeah... not exactly the best person to play with cuz u gotta restart with her and by teh time u use her u have all this stuff and its like ~ player lvl~1 lvl of items 60-90, kinda stupid but w/e
