In cooking terms "to french" is to cut lengthwise. In most of the world they are known as pommes frites.

In a book I got when I was little, "I Can't Believe it's History!" It says of French Fries, and I quote: "During World War I, American Soldiers who were in Belgium bought a fried potato snack and named them French fries." I can only assume why they called them that, but that might explain how they got to America.

Hmm... very interesting.

And I note that you're not calling them "freedom fries". Good call.

I think the whole "freedom fries" thing was so incredibly dumb

French Fries and the fries you get in Belgium really have little to do with each other. xp French Fries are generally thin, while Belgians like their fries really thick. I'm Dutch and we're in between, really. Damn, now I'm in the mood for fries.
