Welcome to the *nix Gaming Thread

I know what you're thinking, "*nix and Gaming? I thought those were two different concepts."

As more and more people grow tired of Windows and their corporate licenses, the popularity of all *nix based distrobutions continues to increase at an incredable rate. With this increase comes the gaming population. This thread is a discussion about the advancement of *nix gaming.

There are many popular games which are now being made for Linux. Unreal Tournament being one of them. There are also many ways to use native Windows games in Linux.

WINE ( WINE Is Not an Emulator (it's recursive) ) is a program that can more or less run Windows applications in *nix. Since WINE is still in development, it's not entirely functional. However I have heard of Linux gamers using Ragnarok Online through WINE.

WINEX/Cedega is another big advancement for *nix gaming. Cedega ( formerly known as WINEX ) is designed specificaly for Windows games. Currently, it supports many popular Windows games:

simply what i want to do as a broke 13 year old is play my nentendo emulators. Wine is too buggy, and winex needs way more than my dell pII can handle. windows gaming has taken a big step up from the days when my computer was modern, and i give it snaps for that.

Wine is way to buggy i agree, winex costs money. If you are going to do gaming and linux i sugest doing a duelboot with win98 cuz you can get win98 for cheap and most games support it. However as more people are transitioning to linux developers are porting more games to linux so linux does have some light at the end of the tunnel for gamers. Now comes the hard part of getting to the end of that tunnel.

WINEX doesn't cost money if you get the CVS version, which I have. I didn't pay for Cedega and it's on my system right now, running quite nicely, I might add.

As I said earlier, WINE is buggy, but you can get several programs running with it. And besides: the amount of games being made for Linux is also increasing. As I said in the previous post: Unreal Tournament can be run in Linux. Neverwinter Nights can also be run, I believe.

What emulator do you use? If I remember correctly Zsnes has a linux version and is the best I've used so far.
