String Names:
Strings in standard notation go from lowest to highest (thickest to thinest string) E-A-D-G-B-E. A way to remember these high to low (thinest to thickest) is "Every Boy Gets Dirty After Eating".
Bodom uses a unique tuning called "Drop D" and "Drop D, down 1 step". For those who dont know what that means, Dropped tuning means strings are looser to produce lower notes. Bodom uses the tuning D-G-C-F-A-D (low to high) for most songs, and C-G-C-F-A-D for songs on the CD "Are You Dead Yet?".
How to tune a guitar (and how to Bodom Tune):
First you need to grab your guitar and your patch chord. A good tuner doesnt have to be expensive, in fact my tuner cost me 10$ and it works great. Most tuners display EADGBE or just a single note with a Bar that moves kind of like a gas gauge. What you need to do is get that bar in the middle by plucking the string and watching the bar move. (Normally) If the bar is to the left of the middle the string is too low, so we tune it up - and vica-versa for on the right side.
My Tuner is one that says EADGBE and it boxs around the closest pitch (IE: if my string is F# it will say G with a leftward bar) so to get it to Bodom we have to count the distance between standard and bodom tuning.
DownTuning:
Drop D refers to the low E string (the thick one), you down tune it to a D, which can be accomplished by fretting (pushing down) on the second fret (space) and plucking the string to produce an E note (because there are 2 semit-tones between D and E. D (the note we want) D#, or Eb and finally the E we're looking for). FInally for the "Down 1 step part". I could explain it the difficult way but basically 1 step = 2 frets. So to put it as simple as I can do this
For drop D: Each strings second fret should read standard tuning (E-A-D-G-B-E)
For drop C, Down 1 Step: The top 5 are tuned the came as Drop D but the low E's 4th fret should read standard on your tuner.
