Pluto has been demoted from planetary status to being a dwarf planet. There are now 8 planets (Huh... and just a few days ago didn't they add new planets? Like Ceres and Xena?)
Everything I know is a lieeee!!!!1111
...okay, yeah, overraction.
But still...
As far as I knew a planet was a mass of rock and uh... other stuff... the size of Pluto and larger. They did that because people would probably get confused and act like I did... or just.. not care whee , actually I'm not too sure of the reason because I couldn't hear my science teacher 'cause I was too busy stealing my friend's pencil while he was explaining. >.<
Anymoose... the new definition of a planet: A mass of rock and uh... other stuff that...
Well, here's the definiton from the AOL article:
"a celestial body that is in orbit around the sun, has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a ... nearly round shape, and has cleared the neighborhood around its orbit."

I woke up this morning and I turned on the TV to watch the news for the first time in a while. I heard "Pluto is no longer a planet!" and went "Whaaa...?! o_o I should really watch the news more during the summer..."
The news anchor guy on TV had the same reaction (minus the "I should really watch news more part xD). He was interviewing an anstronomer from the Science center around here (The Ruben H. Fleet Science Center) he was also opposed the decision too but he said there are other things that are so much cooler to look forward to as far as Astronomy goes. "In probably 15 to 20 years down the road we might start seeing some Earth-like planets"
I agree but for now...
"HOMGPLUTOISNTAPLANET?! LIEEEES! D:<"

So..
Discuss:
*Pluto
*Do you support or oppose the decsion of Pluto being demoted? Do you just not care?
*Do you think we'll find an Earth-like planet in 15-20 years? Or even ever?
*What other 'cooler' things are there to look forward to?
Also...

Uh.. okay I guess that's all. The Fox6 (local news) article is basically the same thing but shorter.

They didn't officialy add those planets just to let you know, plus read my post in the other pluto thread.

i support this because it sets a standard for planets... its no longer just a big clump of mass orbiting a star. it is a little more refined. giving more specifics might help in the discovery of earthlike planets and.... because if earth had an orit like pluto, (not the distance just the way it goes around the sun) we would all burn then its ok then freeze then go back to good.
so we would have a climate where people couldnt survive. im not saying living organisms just integent, humanoid life.... one reason, we would keep dying off never getting a chance to adapt and evolve to the climate.

yeah i read an article about that! wow! i'll always consider pluto a planet, even though its not one officially anymore. it was just too small. oh well ^^

Please don't post an article from AOL -_-. AOL is truly the suck. But anyways - isn't Ceres or Xena larger than pluto? Perhaps they'll up its status to a Full-Blown planet, and we'll have 9 yet again.

I agree with Nomad I beleive that Xena is larger than it, but that isn't truly what matters wheat matters is if the orbit is truly the orbit we think it is. We thought pluto was in the same orbit for the longest time, but now we know it's not.

Oh noes! D:

Yes, Xena is larger than pluto, but at an orbit of 94 AU, its much, much farther away.

wait does that mean that pluto's moon orbits the sun? how can that be if a moon is the satellite of its planet? I dont get it, what classifies them as a planet if they dont orbit the sun?

They thought that it was orbiting the sun instead of pluto, but now we all know that that's wrong. It's following the same path as pluto.

I whole-heartedly support it! I LOVE Pluto with all my heart and really do want it to be a planet, but it clearly is not a planet. It is a drawf planet or KBO (Kuiper Belt Object) If Pluto was discovered today (ignoring these new definitions for a planet) Pluto wouldn't have been considered a planet. It's pruely for historical reasons, the fact that we didnt know of any other objects out there other then Pluto when it was discovered, that made it a planet. This is not scientific at all, and so I totally agree with the new definition. It takes into account gravity, the ability for an object to be round, but also the fact that some objects are clearly part of other bigger populations (like Ceres is to asteriod belt as Pluto is to the Kuiper belt).
I think they did the right thing and though I love Pluto with all my heart, it is not in it's rightful place in the solarsystem.

Astronomy Girl makes some great points. Back then they could barely even see pluto, and it was by pure luck that they did with their telescopes. So, by reasoning they knew that it must be a planet. However, they didn't know that there could be irregular orbits.

I support it. but i dont really have any explaination as to why i support it. I just never thought of pluto as a planet before. like i'll always forget about it. That doesnt mean i dont like pluto!

I'll admit that I will miss Pluto - apparently now Pluto's called 134340 to my understanding. Article.
