Faeries often dance in circles on the ground which are called faerie rings and this spells danger for the human passerby. The wild enchantment of the faerie music can lead him or her inexorably towards the ring which, like a faerie kiss or faerie food and drink, can lead to captivity for ever in the world of Faerie. If a human steps into the ring they are compelled to join the faeries in their wild prancing. The dance might seem to last only minutes, or an hour or two, or even at most a whole night but in fact the normal duration would be seven years by our time and sometimes longer. The unfortunate captive can be rescued by a friend who, with others holding his coat-tails, follows the faerie music, reaches into the ring(keeping one foot firmly outside) and pulls the dancer out.

I have heard of these tales, some are wonderful stories that writers play with. I have always been told to never step in a ring of toadstools for it is where "faries play their wild, enchanting games."

Mmm honestly not sure, I do like the idea so I don't want to dismiss it entirely. The topic does grasp my attention.
What do you think?

Only, according to the tales, the eye-witnesses don't usually leave the fairy ring for a few hundred years, if ever. Kind of makes it hard to test.

quite a dilema it is, they'll be losing thier memory by that age or die before anyone finds them.

I heard that faerie rings were not only enterances to their world, but also sometimes used as means of conveying a strange message to the humans. By this I mean that if the circular shape was wider than it was long, then it was meant as a warning. In opposite (That would be longer than it would be wide) It was used more as a welcome mat, in order to ensare workers, or something of the such. Of course, I'm assuming that those who see these circles don't have faeries dancing in them at the time.

Everybody should read all of Holly Black's books. They're "modern faerie tales", so they deal with kids, mostly in New York, who get into trouble with faeries. They're actually making her kids books, The Spiderwick Chronicles, into a movie with Freddie Highmoor. It should be pretty awesome.

Fairy rings are circular type patches where nothing grows, they are actually caused by a fungus growing in the soil.
You should definately read Storm Front by Jim Butcher and get into The Dresden Files. Fantastic books. White Knight, the third or fourth in the series deals with the Summer Queen of the Fairys and the Winter Queen of the Fairys.

White Knight is the most recent book. You're thinking Summer Knight. That's the fourth one. Probably my favorite one ever.
