If you think KISS is metal then I think you were dropped on your head when you were a baby...
Judas Priest
KISS were the epitome of metal when they started out. For their time, they WERE indeed categorized as metal, by the charts and by fans, as well as other metal bands. What makes them seem so non metal is that they were far more melodic than their harder counterparts (Motorhead, Megadeath, etc.) But when you think about how limited the metal genre was back in the 80's, KISS fits in it just as well as anyone. But now that a multitude of bands have hit the scene with a greater and harder "metal" vibe, KISS seems more rock/pop/dance than anything. But, nonetheless, KISS were metal when they hit the scene, and ARE metal for their ego and balls, that got them the reputation they once held and should be honored for.
On that note, Motorhead is the greatest metal band of the 80's. With Guns N Roses taking a second place for 1) Not appearing until the late 80's and 2) For beaing more hard-grungy rock than metal.
