I know how to do a few things with linux and I don't really need help with the most basic stuff but, how the heck do you play music from CDs on it?!
On my old windows all I had to do was put in the CD and it'd play.
What's with it?

That depends on a lot of things. Which distribution are you using?

It could be drivers, as in you don't have one for your piticular hardware version, or It could be a command line only app or it could be lots of things

Generally install mp3 support would work.

Either that.. or the universal way.. Convert to .ogg =P

hokay.... first ve open a terminal, zen ve type "apt-cache search cd", hit enter and vait for eet to stop scrolling, zen ve look through eet all and find an application vith a description something along ze lines of "cd player".

zen comes ze fun part. ve type "sudo apt-get install ______" (i only have experience with debian-type distros, so if you are using something else, i'm not sure that this will work exactly as it would on said distro-type)

eef you do not have the right lib files/drivers, zey should be downloaded with ze application.

eef that doesn't work, zen i do not know..... (if so, you may have some weirder problem that i am not qualified for, even to offer suggestions/hypothesies)

(please don't ban me for the weirdness above, i'm hungry/very sleep deprived.... crying )

I would say get mplayer, but that's because I live in the CLUE(Command Line User Environment). If you use KDE, Konquerer has an extension that allows you to access audio CDs and DVDs and KDE has kscd. Also, I think xine works too.

I'm using gxine and it can play cd's, I believe the main selling point of xine is it has more compatibility functions than any other player. It's pretty weird to use though.

With KDE, amarok seems to be insanely popular because it's easy to use and great for sorting huge music collections.

m42a, have you looked at mpd (music player daemon)? I don't use that stuff at all but it may be of interest to you.

How could I have forgotten about amaroK? I'm losing my touch. Well, more man pages to browse.

Anyway, mpd looks cool. Thanks for pointing it out.
