Are those tentacles covering the world in the poster for "War of the Worlds"?
They're vines, the red plants that the aliens were attempting to use to terraform Earth into something that would support their particular brand of life; i.e. they'd produce the chemical that they need in the air to survive.
However!
The Tripods in the cruise War of the Worlds, which are very nicely-constructed and huge, DO have tentacle-arms with which they pluck humans from the ground.
They were big AND FREAKING SCARY and I mourn that I did not take the opportunity to watch it in a dark theatre with surround sound because I'da SO been utterly terrified with the awesomness of the noise they made. <3
Though as sexy as the Tripods were ... I'd much prefer a good ole-fashioned Tentacle Monster, as they're er, less bent on the destruction of the planet, and more interested in their own sexual gratification.
