Here is an essay i found on my computer, it is about the significance of Roman gods in Romeo and Juliet's context concerning the emotion of love^^ I know this guild is about Greek Mythology but just replace the Roman names with there Greek counter part, Jupiter/Jove becomes Zeus and Diana becomes Artemis it is as simple as that. Hope you have a good laugh over some of my spelling mistakes and errors^^ Couldn't find my good copy sweatdrop

The Significance of Gods In Romeo and Juliet’s Context Concerning Matters of the Heart

Gods and Goddesses of ancient mythology, personifications of ardent emotions and

human craft have promenaded through the humans subconscious through many

civilizations, eras, and ages some to be remembered and some to be forgotten dwindling

by number due to the psychological and technological advancements, only the most

influential have a role in this day and age. Throughout the world of Romeo and Juliet,

the omnipotent beings of mythic lore have an ample impact on the lives of those who

speak of the mysterious deities. Gods used in context often portray a most influential or

erratic subject such as the intricate emotion of love. In the fair piece of literature, Romeo

and Juliet, the gods are often portrayed by three aspects of love; them being, how

mysterious and unpredictable love can be, the lack of commitment in love, and the

shunning of love itself.

The emotions that the word love derives from are often random and are known to be

very confusing, almost mysterious. “Love is blind” is a phrase often said to describe the

emotion, the phrase is a subtle imply to the Roman god Cupid, a small god portrayed as a

petite cherub with a tiny bow and arrow. …Romeo says, “Alas that love, whose view is

muffled still , should without eyes see pathways to his will!” (I, i, 169-170). As the

phrase before “Love is blind” Cupid’s head is often said to be clothed, a piece of fabric

covering his eyes. Romeo has implied that even though cupid cannot see may he aim his

Nicholas, Page 2

arrow’s with Romeo’s emotions as a guide. Love being blind can cause one to arouse

deep emotions for another at any time or place, causing the very essence of falling in love

to be a very erratic circumstance and ever more proving how mysterious it can be. Love

can be the most exhilarating element life can offer however, one can suddenly lose

interest in love and its direction path altered, as the gods themselves know, often leading

to promiscuity.

Gods defined through centuries of mythology and folklore have often been portrayed as

a promiscuous society, as a result most deities take on more love vignettes than mortally

possible. The word “Promiscuous” full-heartedly implies the great god Jupiter

infamously known for is indiscriminative love affairs. …Juliet says, “Yet, if thou

swear’st, thou may’st prove false; a lover’s perjuries they say Jove laughs.” (II, ii, 91-93)

Jupiter also known by the name of Jove has been known to have countless entanglements,

Juliet implies that if to Romeo she doesn’t mean anymore to Romeo than her body,

Jupiter must be aptly amused by his promiscuous actions. Jupiter is indubitably the

personification of the lack of commitment in love just as Cupid is the personification on

how “Blind” love can be. …Juliet says, “Too like the lightning which doth cease to be

ere, one can say ‘It lightens’”(II, ii, 119-120). Jupiter also known as the god of lightning,

how powerful the lightning can be once it strikes, but none but a second later it is gone,

the lightning is only ever destined to re-appear somewhere else. Juliet knows of this and

warns Romeo that she will not fall for him if that sequence is to be foreordained. One can

also compare the lightning/love analogy to that of Romeo and Rosaline, Romeo claiming

to be infatuated with the women suddenly drops his feeling for her as soon as Juliet is

realized. Love can be difficult to cultivate and once your eye has caught a hold of another

Nicholas, Page 3

lust , a burden to those who succumb to the passionate emotions is encountered, one

might think this too much a trouble and abolish love all together. Gods have even found

love to be too difficult to handle therefore the suppression of love occurs.

Love can be describe as dangerous and an emotion shattering weapon, the power of

love can be too immense and perplexing for some to deal with. To abolish love one might

end up stumbling into Diana’s realm. …Romeo says, “She’ll not be hit with Cupid’s

arrow: she hath Dian’s wit; and in strong proof of chastity well arm’d.” (I, i, 206-20 cool

Rosaline herself cannot be charmed by Romeo’s affections, Romeo thus compares her to

Diana, child-like huntress sworn to be chaste for all eternity, never to feel the love of a

Man. Romeo may also imply that comparable to Diana, Rosaline may very well want to

stay chaste and not dabble into the unstable world of love, where no one is guaranteed to

be left unscarred. Love can be an emotional roller coaster, similar to Diana one may not

be able to handle the maturity, responsibility, and mixed feeling love can bring, therefore

love is banished from there sheltered existence.

The gods as humans cannot fully understand the up most meaning of the word “Love”.

Love is said to be a dangerous game, a winding path filled with numerous obstacles and

devastating pit-falls. The god’s portrayal in Romeo and Juliet represent the uncertainty of

love, and how difficult love can be to maintain. The term “Love” differs to all who have

experienced the infatuating emotion, love is truly different to each individual who

succumb to the feeling. As the gods give into, or don’t accept there aberrant emotions,

guidelines are created, experiences are learned and knowledge is gained, so that one day,

one may look back on these malevolent creatures and learn from their mistakes and

victories on how to live with the abstruse emotion that is love.

lol..I hate big words but I guess it makes you feel more articulate sometimes. 3nodding When I write a report or essay, I use the thesaurus a lot. And then I reword all my sentences so it sounds professional. But when I talk to someone, sometimes i like to mix in a few big words just to confuse the person..lol..it's fun!

Lol, I was talking to one of the sophmores on the soccer team a few days ago and we were talking and I don't even remember what it was, but all of a sudden she's just like, "Why do you use big words like that?" I just kind of stopped and looked at her. Lol, I really didn't have an answer except that it just comes naturally that way. And jeez Jinbin, you yell at me for big words and then you go and get all technical with a thesaurus. Hypicrit. emo Lol and that was a very nice essay Andy_and_Nicky. 3nodding
