i see this show and I will miss him rest in peace AP) BRISBANE, Australia Steve Irwin, the Australian television personality and environmentalist known as the "Crocodile Hunter," was killed Monday by a stingray during a diving expedition, Australian media said. He was 44.
Irwin was filming an underwater documentary on the Great Barrier Reef in northeastern Queensland state when the accident occurred, Sydney's The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported on its Web site.
The Australian Broadcasting Corp. said Irwin was diving near Low Isles neat the resort town of Port Douglas, about 1,260 miles north of Brisbane.
A helicopter carrying paramedics flew to the island, but he died from a stingray barb to the heart, ABC reported on its Web site.
Telephone calls to Australia Zoo, Irwin's zoo in southern Queensland, were not immediately answered.
Irwin is famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchcry "Crikey!" in his television program "Crocodile Hunter," which was first broadcast in Australia in 1992 and has aired around the world on the Discovery channel.
He rode his image into a feature film, and developed the Australia Zoo as a tourist attraction.
Irwin had received some negative publicity in recent years. In January 2004, he stunned onlookers at his Australia Zoo reptile park by carrying his 1-year-old son into a crocodile pen during a wildlife show. He tucked the infant under one arm while tossing the 13-foot reptile a piece of meat with the other.
Authorities declined to charge Irwin for violating safety regulations.
Later that year, he was accused of getting too close to penguins, a seal and humpback whales in Antarctica while making a documentary. Irwin denied any wrongdoing, and an Australian Environment Department investigation recommended no action be taken against him.

Ah man, that is bad. He'll be missed, he was the only guy that made nature shows worth watching.

Whoa, jeez that is very sad. I have to say though...I am NOT surprised. Everyone knew that one day that guy would get killed somehow. He was very cocky about these wild animals. I have to wonder, did he think he was invincible? But oh man, what a way to go, with a stingray barb to the heart. I hope it was quick and not much pain, that is very sad. He had a lot of personality and he will be missed.

My friend's sister posted a link about it last night on myspace via yahoo news. And then everyone here knew bout it caz of the front page of the newspaper this morning. I had a conversation with a guy at the coffeeshop & we both didnt take it as a surprise. I told him that it could happen to anyone -- being the "crocodile hunter of the world" doesn't mean that you're superman to any animal of the world.

Yeah, it *is* a shame when anyone dies, especially this prematurely. I doubt anyone was surprised he went out this way, but then again, I'm sure most people would say he went out doing what he loved to do. How many of us can say we do what we love to do? I say, if ever in his mind while he was alive he thought of the many ways he'd want to go out, this would be at the top of the list. Doing exactly what he does for a living, and to feel alive.

I read this a couple days ago. I wasn't surprised either, I figured he'd get killed in his line of work. It's a shame, I really liked his show, but he did die doing the work he loved. I wonder if he felt like he had fulfilled his dream?
