Zalk
Long Frozen Continent

DESCRIPTION - LOCATION - PEOPLE - CLIMATE - FLORA - FAUNA

Description

Zalk was, at one point, a man-made island created for the Most Powerful Man in Gaia, Johnny K. Gambino. The island apart from Gambino was a utopia designed for that one man, and him alone. However, a large storm that rolled past Isle De Gambino some seven years ago brushed the island away and sent it sailing out into the north ocean. It lost radio transmission within three hours, traveling into the north ring of the planet. When it was finally rediscovered six months ago, it had completely fused with the Ice caps, and was not salvagable. So, Gambino's son decided that it was not worth worrying over and left it.

The whole area, both mech-island and ice caps alike, have been regarded by map makers as Zalk, in name of the original project. Further exploration by a dedicated team discovered quite a bit, including an entire group of people who had apparently taken to the harsh climate, new kinds of plants and animals, and something that could not be described for the explorer's own mortalities.

Location

Zalk is located far to the North, it's exact coordinates being difficult to determine, due to the fact that it drifts in the north ring of Gaia. No one can say for sure it's exact location. What can be said, however, is that at most times it is northwest of Gambino island, so long as the currents have not pushed it far from it's current home.

People

User Image
The people who live on this island, a Metahuman race of yeti-like creatures who appear to refer to themselves as the Gwoa. Though they appear barbaric and pre-evolved humans, they appear to have, at one point, been the same as humans or apes. because they do, infact, speak human. Their actual arrival on the ice caps or how they had come to be the way they are today is something that no one knows. They just simply know they are the way they are.

Their culture is an unusual one in that it is actually being forged in recent times. Before the arrival of Zalk and the "food making machines", the Gwoa spent all their time hunting and scavaging meat from the other ice caps off the larger animals. Before Zalk, they didn't practice many civilities, and due to the weather, they were totally incapable of progressing scientifically. They could make fire, and they had basic weapons. Now, however, they are able to more comfortably live, as they now have access to shelter, where things are often being worked at.

The Gwoa are fluent in Human and Drow and speak weak Elf. Apparently, a small few know a very strangled version of Water Spirit. They can read Human and Drow.

Climate

The climate is an extreme tundra, recieving very little snow, but is constantly covered in ice with it's location on the planet. The waves of the ocean tend to freeze to it to a point, which has caused some cliffs to form around the northern edges.

Flora

The plantlife on this tunderous area is astounding in a number of ways and for a variety of unusual properties. The most common is known among the Gwoa as "Frost Flowers". And all it is is simply a flower that comes up on the roughest part of the year - late summer - and blooms. It's appearance is a very pretty series of seven red petals which stem from a pale yellow center, almost white. It's bright color makes it a becon for all scavangers, and it presents a wonderful taste. It's taste is very sweet without being overpower, and makes a wonderful seasoning on pasteries.

Another unusual fauna rises from the tropical mechanics of Zalk put into an overly harsh frosted environment. That is the GoDo Sola, as described by a scientist. This particular tree is tall and skinny, not particularly strong, but flourishes during the calmer months. This odd tree appears to actually be some kind of mutation of the tree's natural genetics, the arctic weather, and a strain of the G-virus. This tree has a natural and effective nerotoxin in it's sap, and can be used to lace weapons, specifically ones that cut.

Last note worthy plant is a kind of weed that has sealed much of the doors to Zalk's insides. It is much like ivy, except much stronger. It has no particular name.

Fauna

The Fauna is much more mundane, outside of the Gwoa and one other creature. Frost Grunnies.

Frost Grunnies are grunnies that multiplied in the frozen tundra of Zalk, and have wandered the deeper halls of Zalk facility. They spent most of their time nibbling on the food that was stored in the various food generators.

The Frost Grunny is twice as strong as the original Grunny and has double speed in snow. Note, at this time, they can only be found in the sealed off part of Zalk. Their bite invokes Zombie Poison, and the poison is permanent until Green Solution is taken or poured into open wound. Zombies will die if they enter the snow, and can not swim. Grunnies are incapable of swimming, and have a very low health. However, they have an outstanding reproductive rate.

Grunny bites that take place in a specific chamber in Zalk invoke Grunny Spawn. Grunny Spawn move insanely fast, but die under any head damage. After three hours, Grunny Spawn creates ears, after five a Grunny sprouts. At seven, the body dies and creates a strong Grunny. They are double strength of Frost Grunnies, but die in snow.

Only Frost Grunnies currently exist.

Regions

North Cap - Barren wasted land. No inhabitents. Only point of interest is the Ice Bridge.

East Cap - Tundratic Forest - Here, the whole cap is covered with various tundra life, especially GoDo Sola. This expands to the southern and part of the west cap.

West Cap - Gwoa Salome - This area is where the Gwoa have made a small home. The villiage consists of seven huts surrounding a massive bonfire. The huts are, in clock wise order from the north...

1.) This hut belongs to the Leader of the tribe, whom is switched off every few months.
2.) The second hut is where the oldest of the Gwoa, the Medicine Lord mixes various plants for many various injuries.
3.) This building is gigantic, and is home to seven family units. There are eighteen inhabitants.
4.) This building is identicle to the previous, but with five family units. There are fourteen living here.
5.) This building is where any guests are allowed to stay. Being that this is the only building not made of crude material, it manages to stand up to a great bit more. They have furnished the building with things from Zalk.
6.) This building is generally used for pregnant mothers to give birth.
7.) This building is empty except for the tunnel. This tunnel leads into Zalk, so it is generally sealed off except for special occasions.

South Cap - Zalk Facility - On the surface, It looks like a once tropical but now frozen solid paradise. There is very little life here, aside from GoDo.

On the inside, however, there is a giant steel facility. There is no apparent experimentation here, simply an abundance of mechinary. The lay out is simple, actually. What can be accessed includes some kind of lobby and a security room. The security room has a small food production machine, which can make one pound of food every ten minutes, and adjust it's ability accourdingly.

What can not be accessed is a series of halls, lined with machines that had various productive uses, one of which included a series of life supports, which is what maintains the Grunnies. One room is the Production Chamber, where Grunnies were at one point produced. In the center, on a monitor in the security hall, one would see a larger mass. Green and furry, just like all the others. But what... what could it be? The other monitors are offline.

Northern Ice Bridge - This bridge is rediculous a size. The length is several miles long, where as the actual length appears to only be a few yards across. The other side is too foggy to determine.

"Excerts from the journal of Labtech 483 shortly before Zalk Island was pulled from it's original location and headed up north. The video is covered in blood and scratch marks."

Date: Sometime in spring... during the day, I think

We've been locked in this lab for months now and have lost all track of time. Somehow, one thing led to another and the current situation is out of our hands. Our only hope for survival is Labtech X stating he has a huge plan that will make all of this worthwhile. There is a rumor circulating that Johnny K. Gambino was shot, but none of us believe it. I keep hearing word of strange and obscure practices and experiments going on in the lower levels of the lab... Some of us have started loosing our minds... End.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Date: ...Unknown
Rumors are now spreading of Labtechs disappearing within the compund, but nothing has been confirmed yet. We've been seeing less and less of Labtech X as we continue our research on gene manipulation. I've been hearing through the grapevine that there is a large dig-site in the lowest levels of the lab. What they are looking for, though, no one knows... End.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Date: ... I don't try to keep track anymore...

They found something beneath the man-made island... something... not natural. Labtech X refuses to tell us what it is or what it does, but I've been hearing people talk about something involving the power of the earth... others speaking of ruling the world... It's now become appearent that Labtechs have, in fact, been disappearing. Of the original group of 300 of us on the 4th floor, only 27 of us remain... Labtech X has taken control of the gene manipulation research and told us to do research on the earth itself... End.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Date: I don't know... but not long remains
Only 15 of us left... we have discovered ancient texts that speak of this glove. Appearently, the earth itself is a living, breathing creature of some sort. From it was born 5 beings to help gaurd and protect the creature, one of earth, one of air, one of fire, one of water, and one of spirit. Along with each was created artifacts apart from the beings themselves, though it seems that the beings knew not of these artifacts... I'm excited about this find... but... I'm worried...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Date:

7 of us on this floor... we keep hearing things... little things... loud things... screaching, screaming, the wailing of tortured souls... scratching and growling... the pitter patter of millions of little feet... it gets... closer by the day... we havn't seen our boss in a very long time now and wonder if even the great Labtech X has been killed as well... mutiny? Failed experiment? Suicide? I know that's how many of us went in the end... we gave up on this "glove" thing... we're too worried for out own safety... people speak of madness and cannibalism going on in lower levels...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Date: FREEDOM!
Soldiers just entered the island! Scores of them with HUGE steel crates. They went down into the lower levels and said they'd be back to let us out when they were done speaking to Labtech X! We're saved! THANK THE GODS!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Date ...the end...

They left... Labtech X came up with the soldiers, the crates rattling back and forth with tiny screaches coming from inside them... we didn't even bother to ask what was in them. Labtech X walked up to us and told us what a wonderful job we did, then left with the soldiers and sealed all of the doors shut... we can't get out, no matter what we try... the thing that worries us is that we can still hear whatever it was that was in those crates in the center... a few floors down...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Someone, please find this... find US... we're locked up in Lab #17 on floor 5... these green things... scores and scores of them, maybe even a few HUNDRED... they ate through the doors... they're horrible. I saw one bite straight into Labtech 285... into his head... he screamed... a horrible, soul wrenching scream... a sound I never want to hear again... we can hear them screaming... we are the only 3 left, locked in here without a help in the world... Wait. They all stopped making a noise, stopped clawing at the doors... what is going on...? OH GODS! The door is ripped in half! Some sort of large, green... THING... Pyro finished reading the extract and closed his magic book, shuddering. Wondering where he was, he had asked the book, and it displayed the grim history of Zalk. "Creepy," Pyro said. He looked up, squinting his eyes against the sun shining on the ice. According to his book, he was somewhere near the west cap. Pyro pulled out his book again. "Where is the Gwoa village?" The book displayed an arrow pointing in front of Pyro. He sighed, put away his book, and started walking. He did not wear any protective clothing, due to his abnormal body temperature.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Some hours later

Pyro arrived at the Gwoa village. The gwoa treated him with caution, unsure if he was a lunatic, for they had never seen a fur-less humanoid endure the cold without heavy clothing before. Pyro assured them he was quite sane, and explained about his abnormal body temperature. To prove his point, he bent down and scooped up some snow into his left hand. The snow sizzled and steamed as it evaporated. The Gwoa were both relieved and worried. They were happy that he was not a lunatic, they told Pyro, but why had he come here? "We have not seen fur-less creatures like you for a long time," one of them said. "I learned about the tragedy that struck the humans that came here with the island," Pyro stated solemnly, "I wish to explore the facility, to learn what happened." The Gwoa immediately became anxious, whispering amongst themselves. Finally, the one who spoke before said to Pyro, "You must consult the Leader and the Elder, our Medicine Lord, before we may allow you to enter." Pyro bowed in agreement, and was led into the Medicine Lord's hut, where the Leader was currently visiting. When told of Pyro's request, the two became worried. " The food making machines are very important to us," the Leader said, eyes narrowing. "Your explorations will not harm them, will they?"
Pyro shook his head, "I am only interested in the areas that have been sealed off by the ivy like plant." The Medicine Lord now spoke to Pyro in a creaking voice. "Youngling, I warn you to not venture into those areas. The creature in those places are very dangerous, and I cannot help you if you are bitten and infected by their venom." The gwoa regarded Pyro with eyes full of wisdom. " Are you sure you do not want to turn back?" Pyro shook his head. "Do not worry about me, my body temperature prevents me from becoming ill. No organic virus, sickness, infection, or whatever can withstand the heat of my inner temperature." He met the Lord's gaze with steady eyes. The Medicine Lord and Leader studied him carefully. Finally the Leader spoke. "Very well then, we shall allow you to enter the sealed areas." Pyro bowed and thanked them, then turned and left.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The entrance to the sealed areas
In an unused room in the facility, Pyro stood in front of a door that was covered in Ivy. The door itself was coated in ice, further sealing it. Behind Pyro, the door leading out of the room had also been sealed by the Gwoa. Pyro had explained to them that he didn't want whatever was inside to get out and harm them. Pyro stood, studying the door, wondering what was behind it....
((I recently was accepted into Leviathan, and I decide this would be a good thread to make my debut in, because it hasn't been used. If possible, I would like to be the only "character" exploring the area. As for what is already INSIDE the place, that is up to the author and Enki Leviathan.))
Pyro finished studying the door. He reached out with his right hand, placing it on the door. Flames sprang to life around his hand. The flames continued to spread around the door like a growing puddle, melting the ice covering the door and burning away the ivy. When the door was free, Pyro extinguished the flames. He gave the door a small push with his left hand. As the door slowly swung inwards, Pyro stepped back and materialized his sword in his right hand, sinking into a partial crouch defensively. Slowly the door opened. The next room was too dark to see into. Unwilling to simply walk into the room, Pyro thought for a moment. He lit a small fireball on his left index finger and flicked it into the room. The fireball floated through the air, lighting up the area. There was nothing living in the room. It was, in fact, a hallway of some sort. Pyro quickly entered, closing the door behind him. Putting his left hand against the door again. He partially melted it, just enough to seal it again.
The hallway was a mess. A mixture of grime and ice covered the walls, and icicles hung from the ceiling. the floor was covered in half frozen debris. Pyro looked down the hallway. The left side ended about 50 ft away, while the right side continued on into the darkness. Pyro walked left, down the hallway. He saw a rectangle covered in grimy ice on the wall. By breathing flames softly over it to melt the ice away, Pyro was able to discern what lay underneath:
Floor 5, Lab #24
Pyro's pulse quickened at the name of the floor, remembering the excerpt his book showed him. He continued to walk, past other sealed doors, each with another marker. Some of the markers was readable, others had to have the ice melted off of them. The numbers were going down. Finally, Pyro came to a halt. In front of him the ceiling had caved in, cutting off the rest of the hall. On the right wall there was a lab with a broken in door. The heavy steel door had been ripped in two, and was covered in claw marks. Disturbingly, some of the marks were spaced almost like...HUMAN fingers had done it. ((this is especially disturbing as human fingernails cannot leave claw marks on steel)) A chill ran over Pyro as he examined the label next to the ruined door:
Floor 5, Lab #17
Pyro stepped inside. eek "OMFG-WTF?," he said softly, "What in God's name happened here? " The room was the site of a massacre, preserved by the ice. The walls were painted with dried blood. broken lab equipment was mixed with human remains. Mostly bones. Pyro stood in the doorway, paralyzed with shock. He bent down and picked up a human femur. It had been gnawed at by teeth that were much too large to be human. Pyro looked around and found a skull that had been smashed open like a melon. Brown stained rags were all the remained of the scientist's clothing. ((I am assuming that you only get.....'turned' if you are not killed by the monsters, and that most, if not all people were eaten)) Pyro was startled out of his trance by a noise. Heart pounding, he looked up. The noise, which was growing louder, sounded like.....scratching....the sound of claws on metal. It was coming from outside.......
Pyro ran back out into the hallway. The sounds were coming from the nearest of the sealed off labs. Realizing that he might be cut off if whatever was on the other side broke through, Pyro started to run. Just as he got past the door on his right where all the sounds were coming from, it burst open. "Oh Sugar Honey Iced Tea!" Pyro yelled as he saw the writhing mass of green fur behind the door. Grunnies boiled out of the opening. They covered the walls, the floor, even the ceiling. There were easily over a thousand. Pyro continued to run. As he passed another doorway, he realized that it too had scratching sounds coming from it. "Oh f*** no!" Pyro yelled, speeding up as the second door also burst open, and more grunnies came out. Door after door was broken down, and more and more grunnies joined in the chase. Pyro continued to run, the Grunnies literally nipping at his heels. He did not even attempt to stand and fight, nor did he waste any energy trying to burn the grunnies. The sheer number, mass, and momentum of the pack was too great. He could not stop, he could not slow for even an instant, or he would become nothing more than a pile of bones. Pyro added small bursts of flame to his feet with every step, using the added momentum to slowly widen the gap between himself and his pursuers.
((To help people who might be viewing this understand how I see these grunnies. I give you two things. The first is that I see the grunnies as an almost parasitic life form that attacks in waves, like the Flood in Halo, so I based Pyro's first meeting with the Grunnies off of Master Chief's first meeting with the Flood. Secondly, I give you a hand drawn picture of a grunnie trying to get through some odd crevice smile )
Floor 5, Hall 1B
Security Monitor 5-1B12354A
One of the few functioning Security cameras emitted a small mechanical whine as it surveyed the hall way before it. A person ran past, screaming wildly. A flood of some ten-thousand Grunnies soon followed. The monitor duly noted the movement in the log (which was long broken) and resumed watching the now empty section of hallway.
" AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!" crying gonk crying gonk gonk crying gonk crying gonk crying gonk crying gonk crying gonk Pyro screamed.
He continued to run, and finally he came upon an open door on his left. He darted inside, not caring if more grunnies were inside. The room couldn't possibly hold as many as there was outside. Pyro slammed the door shut and put his back to it, holding it as grunnies slammed into it. Before they could force the door open, Pyro placed both hands flat against the door and welded it to it's frame the same way he had sealed the other door. He heard a few yelps of pain breakthrough the sounds of scratching as some of the grunnies were burned by the superheated metal. Pyro allowed himself to relax a bit. He began to slide down the door into a sitting position, then froze. He was not alone. Something shuffled forward from the darkness. What appeared out of the gloom was.....no....it USED to be human.
Pyro went into a cold sweat as he stared at the creature. It's skin was pale and clammy, and its mouth was that of a grunnies. The skin around the skull was sunken and dry, and the eyes.....Pyro was captivated by them. One of the eyes was a sunken hole from which a red glow emanated. But the other eye, though it too was sunken and tired, was undeniably human. The creature wore a tattered lab coat, covered with brown stains. Pyro started as the creature spoke in an odd rasping voice.
"Hello there, stranger. I am, or was, Labtech 483"
The creature motioned with his hand at a faded name-tag on his coat that Pyro hadn't noticed. The creature shuffled forward, and Pyro raised his hands defensively. Former Labtech laughed, a horrible chocking sound.
"Don't worry, I won't hurt you. unlike some of my former colleagues, I was not fully turned. "
"Really? How? Prove it." Pyro said bluntly, not lowering his hands. 483 smiled.
"The fact that I am not completely transformed should be your first clue." He said as he pointed to his human eye. "You see, when we created the G-virus, we needed to develop an antidote in case people had adverse reactions. When the grunnies and...that THING attacked us, I was bitten, but unlike my friends, I was not torn apart. I found a prototype of the antidote, and though it was only partly effective, it still kept me from fully turning. By the way, how did you know of this place? Why did you come?"
Pyro answered cautiously, "I read about what happened, and saw part of your journal. I came because I wanted to find out what happened. And I saw the room where you were attacked, I saw the bodies of your friends. How did YOU survive? And what was...that THING?" 483 smiled ruefully.
"Ahh, so that was why you came. You see, the creatures here have something intelligent guiding them. Whatever that being is, it wants to get out of this facility. It wanted my knowledge, so it let me live. And to answer your other question, that THING is.....a Gruzzly Bear. One the higher level G creatures."
"A Gruzzly Bear." Pyro repeated. "Did you guys HAVE to experiment on something that dangerous? No, don't answer that, it doesn't matter." Pyro sighed and finally sank into a sitting position, crossing his legs. He sat still as he absorbed all that had happened, listening to the scratching sounds of the grunnies trying to get through.
Suddenly, there was a scuffling sound from the other side of the room. Pyro's head snapped up; 483 remained indifferent.
"They're trying to get in through the vents. They won't hurt me, but I suggest you seal them somehow for your own sake." Pyro ran to the corner of the room, tripping on trash hidden by the gloom. Squinting up at the corner, Pyro lit another fireball. As the glow permeated the room, He saw a metal vent high up on the wall. The vent started to vibrate. "Oh, that's just GREAT!" Pyro shouted as the scuffling got louder. He increased the power of the fireball. in his right hand. As the vent burst open Pyro rammed his palm into the vent. With a muffled and tiny roaring sound, the fireball exploded and its energy shot down the vent, incinerating the grunnies inside it. However, one Grunny, the one who had worked the vent cover loose, managed to get into the room unnoticed. Pyro had just put the vent cover back on and melted it into place when he felt a searing pain in his left side. Howling, he slapped the grunny off of him with a fiery right hand. The grunny died. Pyro sat down again, wincing. 483 became interested, and rafter rummaging around in the gloom, held up an vial of green liquid. "Here," he said, "You will need this prototype antidote if you wish to keep your sanity." He was surprised when Pyro refused. "No need," he said, showing 483 the already cauterizing bite-marks, "My body temperature is hot enough to kill the virus before it can infect me. My normal temperature is a scorching 200 degrees Fahrenheit."
"Oh, never mind then." 483 put the vial back down among the trash. "You know," he said thoughtfully, "if I recall correctly, once the grunnies find they are unable to get at something, they will send in-" he was cut off by the sudden silence. Now, inp lace of the constant scratching, there was the sound of heavy footsteps. Pyro finished the sentence for 483: "Let me guess, they send in the Gruzzly." He said sarcastically as the two moved to the back of the room...
PostPosted: Tue Jul 06, 2010 12:39 pm
There was a massive thud against the sealed door. A massive dent appeared in the thick metal. A loud roar could be heard coming from the other side. More thuds and resulting dents followed. Pyro took up a fighting stance and shifted his sword to a two handed grip. His eyes began to glow as he gathered his energy in preparation. Part of the door broke free of its seal and bent inward. A massize green paw was visible as it was pulled back for another blow.
*WHAMMM!!!!* the door was struck down with an earsplitting crash. A pair of large green paws were on the edge of the door. The paws, which were equiped with a lovely set of claws, were attached to a green bear that was so massive that it could not stand up in the hallway or lab room. Its eyes burned a malevolent red as it roared at Pyro. It was, obviously, a Gruzzly.
Eyes that glowed bright red with savage and malicious intelligence glared into equally bright eyes that burned red with power....and a disturbing lack of fear......or any other emotion for that matter. The two stood still as they took eachothers measure. The bear glaring, sniffing the air. Pyro standing resolute, a look of deadly seriousness on his face. Grunnies gathered behind the Gruzzly but did not enter, unwilling to risk getting in its path. The tension filled the air like a storm about to break as the bears savage fury and agitation clashed with Pyro's calm, void like state. Soon the tension would break....
The Gruzzly attacked first. With a wall shaking roar, it charged forward. Pyro calmly came forward as well to meet it, sword raised - and was sent flying by the force of the gruzzly. Pyro went flying backwards, sword still held out in front of him. He hit a large amount of machinery piled against the far wall, disappearing with a loud rattle. The bear, now with a burn mark on its muzzle from Pyro's sword, paused, sniffing. When nothing moved, it cautiously began to advance towards the fallen pile. Then it halted, and growled. The pile was slowly turning red and glowing. Red hot gears and casings flew in all directions. 483 jumped and ducked to avoid them as he cowered in a corner of the room. The bear didn't flinch as the hot metal struck it. It roared as Pyro stood up, holding his sword in his right hand while flicking glowing gears off of himself with the left. "Ok, forget the calm and minimal way," Pyro muttered. His eyes were glowing even brighter. "Lets do this in a way that is FUN" He snarled the last word. The gruzzly came at him again, opening its maw and snapping at Pyro. The stench coming from its mouth was awful. Pyro sidestepped to the right as the bear's mouth opened, turning and shoving his sword sideways into the bear's mouth. The gruzzly's teeth clamped down on the blade as it growled with satisfaction at trapping the weapon. But then Pyro grinned evily. "Well, smokey, I hope you like mexican food." Pyro diverted a large portion of energy into the sword. A searing blast of heat erupted from the sword. Fire shot from the gruzzly's mouth, badly burning it's muzzle. But the real damage was on the inside, as the majority of the heat barbecued the Gruzzly from the inside out. Smoke poured from the gruzzly as it fell, its jaws crumbling to ash, freeing the sword. "Pyro wiped the sooty blade off on the pelt of the carcass, and turned towards the grunnies that had been behind the bear. "Oh don't worry, there's plenty of leftovers." If the grunnies had any intelligence they would have run. Unfortunately, they were not gifted with intelligence, and instead tried to swarm Pyro who stood calmly on top of the dead gruzzly. he had put away his sword and was holding out his right hand in a pushing motion. He smiled as the grunnies closed in and his out-stretched hand began to glow....
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just outside the hall

There was FOOD! REAL FOOD! The grunny had no other thoughts besides the desire for food as it moved with a sea of identical grunnies. It neared the hole where the food was. Suddenly a horizontal column of fire burst out from the hole. It splashed off of the walls, roaring in both directions down the hallway. The grunny was turned to blackened bones before it could react.

Pyro slapped his hands together to wipe off any ash that had gotten on them. Grinning, he turned to Labtech 483, who was struggling out of the corner he had hidden in. "Well," Pyro announced proudly, " I guess that takes care of our grunny problem."
"For now, at least. I suspect that was only a single floor's worth." 483 corrected him as he came over to the dead gruzzly. "The lower floors are bound to have much more creature on them than this one did."
Pyro stopped grinning as he tried to imagine the other floors. "Great," he mumbled, "I guess I have my work cut out for me."
PostPosted: Sat Jul 10, 2010 11:43 am

As it turned out, the thousands of Grunnies Pyro had encountered WERE limited to that particular hallway. After conversing with 483, Pyro learned that beyond the blocked off section of the hallway the entrance to the next hallway. Upon further questioning, Pyro learned that he would have to clear ALL of the hallways to get to the lower levels, as the elevators were on the other side of the facility. (For "containment purposes," 483 had said.) Pyro and 483 had reached the sealed portion of the hall. Pyro then reached out with his right hand and burned a spider-web of lines through the debris that allowed it to crumble in a cloud of dust. Pyro and 483 climbed on top of the rubble, peering through the cloud of dust. As the dust cleared, Pyro and 483 saw a hallway of red eyes.
"Oh s**t," Pyro said.
"I told you there might be more," 483 replied nonchalantly.
"Just shut up and stay out of the way," Pyro snapped as 483 tried to conceal a smile. The grunnies swarmed towards Pyro, who met them with a roaring wall of flame he generated from his left hand as he held up his sword in the right.

Pyro made his way down the hallway, a wall of flame blasting out from the palm of his left hand, which he held out before him as he walked forward. 483 followed in Pyro's wake. Every time the pair reached a door, the same thing would happen. Pyro would ask 483 if he had to go through the door to get to the stairs. 483 would shake his head no. Pyro would stab his sword into the door with his right hand. Then, as surprised grunnies on the other side stared at the glowing blade, Pyro would form a concentrated ball of fire in his left hand. Then Pyro would twist the sword and pull it out, leaving a hole. Pyro would then shove the ball into the hole. The would be a large "WHUMP" sound as everything in the room was turned to ashes. then Pyro would continue walking. Every now and then they would sit down and rest. Finally, the hallways ended in a large set of double doors.
"Is THIS the right door?" Pyro asked wearily.
"Yes, this is the entrance to the stairs to level 4." 483 replied. The two sat down for a quick breather.
"You know," Pyro commented as they sat staring at the doors, "I would have thought that something more than grunnies would be waiting for us by now." A heavy thud rang out as a large dent appeared in the doors. A familiar roar could be heard coming from the other side. Three more roars joined it. "I should have just kept my mouth shut." Pyro moaned as the gruzzlies bashed their way through the doors. 483 backed away as the bears caught sight of Pyro. This time, Pyro did not hesitate. He ran forward and jumped at the leading gruzzly. As he came down, Pyro gripped his sword in both hands and pointed it downward. As he landed on the gruzzly's head in a crouch, Pyro used the weight of his decent to drive the blade through the skull of the Gruzzly. Fire shot up around the blade and and smoke poured from the Gruzzly's eye sockets as its brain was turned to carbon. Pyro leaped off of the carcass as it sank to the floor, pulling his blade from its skull. Two of the remaining Gruzzlies roared and slashed at Pyro with their paws. Pyro blocked their claws with his sword, but the savage blows sent it spinning out of his hands. Roaring, the Gruzzlies advanced. Pyro sprang forward. Ducking under the paws of one gruzzly, he came up against its chest. Before the gruzzly could react, Pyro drove the stiffened fingers of his hands through the bear's neck, burning through the spinal cord and and arteries. Withdrawing blackened fingers from the smoking holes in the paralyzed and dying gruzzy, Pyro move on the third gruzzly. As it tried to bite him, he moved back. When the bear's jaws snapped shut, Pyro gave it a palm-heel strike to the muzzle. Bone splintered and cracked as the Bear's snout crumpled like a soda can. As the bear reeled in pain, Pyro aimed a fiery right round-house kick at it's side. As ribs snapped, a piece of bone went through the bears lungs. with only one gruzzly left, Pyro went for his sword, leaving the third gruzzly choking with foamy blood coming from its ruined muzzle. The fourth gruzzly charge at Pyro as he ran towards the spot where his sword had fallen. the gruzzly was gaining on him. Just as the bear leaped for him, Pyro got his hands on the hilt. Swiftly spinning around, he lunged forward, the sword upraised to meet the falling gruzzly. As one of the paws raked Pyro's chest, leaving shallow wounds, his sword pierced the Gruzzly's heart. With a sigh of relief, Pyro extracted his sword and removed himself from the corpse, his wounds already cauterizing. As 483 came forward, Pyro decided he would need a longer break before entering the next level of the facility...
