While calm in appearance, the serenity that blankets the world is merely a curtain over the turmoil that threatens to surface...
An unprovoked attack against a neighboring country, an assault by a strike team deep into enemy territory, and a declaration of war against the world plunges a previously peaceful existence into bitterness and chaos. Thrust into the ensuing madness is a young man named Squall Leonhart, a cadet in the Garden military academy of Balamb. A lone wolf by the standards of others, Squall's relentless drive to become the best leads him into SeeD, an elite mercenary unit. His final test as a graduating cadet of SeeD is to settle the growing hostilities between the neighboring countries of Galbadia and Dollet. What was already a confusing set of events takes a turn for the worst when Galbadia begins its invasion on the rest of the world. For Squall, the turmoil of the world around him is nothing compared to the turmoil inside of him; his encounter with a free-spirited young woman named Rinoa Heartilly has turned his well-ordered universe upside down. As an intense man who thrives in the regimented discipline of the military academy, Squall finds Rinoa's carefree attitude fascinating. Yet there is no time to ponder these thoughts, for Galbadia's irrational hostility has been linked to a sorceress named Edea, a powerful magic user. The job of dealing with this new threat has fallen to Squall and the rest of SeeD. Focused on this new task, they can only ponder what the future will hold.

~Characters~
Squall Leonhart Age: 17 Height: 5' 8" A cadet in SeeD, the special combat unit of the Balamb Garden Military Academy. His aloof and anti-social behavior makes him appear selfish and lacking a sense of team unity. Squall dislikes having others involved in his affairs, and is best described as a lone wolf.

Rinoa Heartilly Age: 17 Height: 5' 3.5" A lively individual with the ability to touch people's hearts. Open and honest with her feelings, she speaks her mind without reservation. Driven by her ambitions, she can be difficult.

Seifer Almasy Age: 18 Height: 6' 2" A candidate for SeeD. Although Seifer is a naturally gifted soldier, his inability to take orders and control his temper has earned him the label of "problematic". Although recognizing and praising Squall's abilities, Seifer regards him as his ultimate rival.

Quistis Trepe Age: 18 Height: 5' 6" A SeeD cadet at the age of 15, Quistis now instructs Squall and his companions at Balamb Garden. Contrary to her cool exterior, she occasionally has a difficult time coping with frustaration, and as a result can become depressed over trivial matters.

Zell Dincht Age: 17 Height: 5' 5" Aspiring to become like his grandfather who was once a soldier, Zell entered Garden at the age of 13. Not being one to think matter through, he is known to act on impulse rather than reasoning. At heart, however, he is an honest, dedicated young man

Irvine Kinneas Age: 17 Height: 6' Irvine is known as the "Best Shooter in Garden." His reputation for cherishing the company of women is almost as well known as his accuracy with a gun. Although he seems to be uncaring and frivolous at first glance, in reality he is sensitive and serious.

Selphie Tilmitt Age: 17 Height: 5' 1.5" Selphie seems out of place in a military academy because of her innocent appearance and light-hearted personality. Her happy-go-lucky disposition and laid-back attitude tend to catch others off guard.

Ok, first I want to say that this game seemed different than the other games simply because I got the impression that the PRIMARY story was the love story between squall and riona, and the secondary story was.. of course.. saving the world as is usually the main. Well I dont care I thought it was f*&$ing brilliant! I loved this game and even though ive beaten it like 47 times I just have to replay it every few months. HAHA you know I still cant collect all the cards, guess I never mastered the game. All in all the story line flowed almost movie style and the cinimatics were awesome. Did you see the one where the gardens came together and those bikes were jumping across like a mile above the ground it was great! ok im done lol

A gunblade is a really awesome weapon to use!! way better than just a broadsword! why just slash the enemy? Plus, as a fighter with personality, Zell is way better than Tifa. (here in Edmonton, Canada fur-lined coats are coming back!)

I enjoy the game but still have not beat it. (I'm grounded of video games till next month... stressed ) I'd say it's my second Fav, #1 being FF7. Squall is an awsome character, but He looks cooler in KH2 in my opinion. (combine the two, so KH2 has FF8 hair and he'd be totaly awsome!)

I love FF8, from when I first started playing it til the present day! I have Squalls necklace, a FF8 baseball cap, wallet, and many more things.
I play through it quite often, trying to beat my personal best time! Which is about 48 hours 100% complete!
I know the game off the back of my hand! I have multiple copies of the game!

Aww, shoot! VIII's tenth anniversary was almost a week ago! I feel awful for missing it, but I'm surprised I've not heard anything about it. I mean, I wasn't expecting a Compilation of VIII, but not even some stupid collectible figures or something? My poor little VIII...
Actually, no. It's American anniversary was September 9; it came out in Japan in February. Still, I never heard anything.

VIII had to be my fav. Graphics were great for PS1, loved the GFs, all the character personalities, Seifer's chicken wuss jokes, and the overall story. Of course, I could have done with a bit less drawing. Every new game now is just drawing to 100 of everything and then owning the rest of the game with normal attacks.
