A stretch of land near the riverbank, where various obstacles and targets are set up.

Cyth wondered into the area, bored with nothing to do and looked around the landscape. He sat on a rock and watched the water flow.

“Well, I guess I should head in, not like I came here to watch sunsets,” said Cyth to himself as he headed back to the dining hall.

About an hour later, the stern head of the Kuromatsu family had gathered together the trainees and a few of the masters on the field, and was beginning his instructions. There were three areas set up - one near the river, which was cleared out for a small group of people. The grassy area had scarecrows set up, as well as a few dolls scattered around on the ground. The area where Maro was standing was clear except for three coffins that were standing upright.

After a moment's pause, Maro interrupted the chatter to begin the session. "All right, people, listen up. I know most of you already know what we're doing, but since we've got a new rookie, you're just going to have to put up with it. Dream-sensei is out doing errands today, so we're only having one group for the upper levels - and speaking of which, Ying Ai-kun, you're in the upper level starting today, along with Hazuki-kun and Dezu-kun."

He paused a moment to give her a quick smile showing his approval.

"That leaves Cyth-kun and Kia-chan as the basic trainees. You guys'll be training with Jou-sensei. So don't give him too hard of a time," he added to Kia.

Jou gave Maro a sour look. He hated teaching the lower level.

"The rest of you will be training with Hoshi-sensei, along with some help from my wife. You will be learning and perfecting the Hyoui Gattai technique. Hoshi-sensei will show you how to perform the merge with spirits that live in this area. Most of you will be familiar with them, as many of them live in the house. Those of you who can already use Hyoui Gattai will be fighting those dolls, which Bara-sensei will be controlling."

Bara nodded curtly, fingering her beaded necklace.

"Finally, if anyone is feeling confident of their skills, they can come and fight my kyonshii. I'll teach winners to do the oversoul."

He smirked lightly. He knew that none of the kids would be able to beat him at full power, so in actuality the kyonshi would only be controlled with a minimal amount of furyoku. It would still be a challenge for the young and unskilled, however, so once someone managed to, he assumed they would be ready.

Jou muttered. Maro always got out of doing real work with that phrase. It would be a long time, in his opinion, before this lot would be skilled enough to learn oversoul by that standard. He was almost tempted to go beat him himself and ask to steal the job. ... Maybe after today's lesson. He grinned slightly.

Cyth looked over who was to be his teacher. Jou didn't seem too bad, he was only a few years older than himself and wasn't very colorful. Cyth laughed to himself at least I didn't get that Bara woman. Then he looked over to his “classmate” Kia she's about as young as Ying Ai, if not younger... I feel like I'm a little slow at obtaining this power, like maybe told of it like years ago? No... I probably would not have cared back then.

And what is up with those coffins?

A tallish man in a long, red coat could be seen striding confidently along the natural landscape that made up the training area. His hands were clasped behind his back, fiddling with a rolled up parchment of paper with a blue ribbon, and he was trying with all his might not to untie it. His hair seemed light and breezy as it flowed behind him in a natural blonde-to-rust gradient. the metal chain and pendant on his neck made a rhythmic chiming noise as he walked, and a gentle smile was splayed across his lips, seemingly neutralizing the more intimidating look of his black eye patch across his left eye.

Des looked at the newcomer, shrugged, and then did a double-take. "Whoa!"

It was difficult for her not to stare. A tall sort of man, obviously a foreigner and dressed very strangely, appearing at the Kuromatsu house... it definitely piqued her imagination. "Hoshi-sensei!" She whispered urgently. "That guy looks tough! Is he gonna challenge someone to a duel?"

Maro's reaction was considerably less drastic, but a curious look had appeared on his normally stern face. It wasn't often that training sessions were interrupted, and even less often that they encountered two new faces on the same day. But he didn't jump to the conclusion that Des had. After all, the fellow had brought a message.

"Afternoon, young man," he greeted the stranger with composure. "What brings you to our training grounds?"

By that, he clearly meant the letter, as he held his hand out for it.

"I hope I'm not late," the young man stated sheepishly, ducking his head and rocking back on his heels as a child would do. He held out the letter shyly, palm-up in a sign of peace. "He said I should give this to you before I do anything else," he stated simply with a proud grin, then tacked on almost as an afterthought, "My name's Dustin! I don't know if the letter says that or not, I didn't write it and I didn't think it'd be very nice to open it and read it since it's not for me."

"That wasn't much of an answer," Maro stated simply, firmly accepting the scroll-like paper and rolling it out. His eyes traveled the paper and he nodded firmly.

"I see, another trainee. This is rare, getting two in one day," he muttered under his breath, and then added to Dustin, "The person who reccomended you has written that I should go easy on you. I'm not going to."

And then his eyes fell on the name that had signed the letter. He paused for a very long time. It was familiar, no doubt about it. He was a known shaman while he was only training.

"Teraku-sama taught you?" He paused again. "He must be a centennial by now, I honestly thought he was dead. Well, well. All right, Dustin-kun. The letter says you can contact spirits by physical means, so you're in line to learn the hyoui gattai. You'll be training with them."

He waved his hand in the direction of Bara, Hoshi and the trainees working with them.

Dustin's smile widened, and he stood tall, his pride almost visibly expanding upon being set up to work specifically with the other students here. That meant he was accepted, right?? He nodded quickly, but clumsily and quickly brought his hands up to push his hair out of his face, and with a shy laugh turned and obediently trotted off towards the direction that had been indicated to him.

Bara clucked when Dustin trotted over, and shook her head at Maro.

"My husband is so brief. Don't mind him! Welcome to the Kuromatsu estate. I am Kuromatsu Bara. It's nice to meet you, Dustin-kun," she bowed politely and then grinned at him.

"But, time is ticking, so you should introduce yourself to everyone else at a later time. Now we train!" She gripped the beads around her neck, and nodded to her brother-in-law.

"Yay!" Kia chirped, she rushed up to Jou and clinged on his arm. "I'm with Jou-niichan! What will be doing today Jou-niichan? Will it be something fun? Hmm? Hmm?"

"Alright!" Hazuki said, determined. "I'll perfect my Hyoui Gattai today!" Just anothe step to being closer to the shaman king, in the little boy's opinion.

“Let's get started on this spirits thing,” Cyth stated as he waited impatiently. He couldn't care less of the new people except that he wanted to see this stuff in action, if it was for real.

"All right, all right," Jou muttered, ignoring Kia to the best of his patience. "Everyone go by the river. We'll start with summoning water spirits, those are the easiest. Put your hands in the water and feel your energy flow with it. Then call to the spirits with your soul."

He demonstrated by touching the surface with only one finger. A tiny spirit popped up. It didn't have a face, but it was a small glowing form with a body that looked a bit like an animal. Water swirled inside its belly.
