G’dor groaned as a bit of light glared in through the shutters of his window into his closed eyes. Morning had come to the Wyer and it wasn’t shy about announcing it. Only after being roused did the sounds that the morning brought with her golden eye become apparent to him. The chirping of fire-lizards outside his window squabbling over a bird carcass, the hum of people down on the street, the trumpets of dragons welcoming travelers to Fort, and the thrumming purrs of nine cats, one blue flit, and one bronze. Another groan was given as a slender hand pulled a loose throw pillow over his eyes, but it was too late- the felines had seen the movement in the bed. Even after G’dor remained motionless in his bed as they mewed and barraged him with hungry prods they remained unconvinced that he was truly asleep. He had no choice but to surrender to their hunger and sacrifice any extra minutes of sleep he might have had. The pillows and blankets were pushed aside- knowing full well that the felines would get themselves out of the way- and G’dor’s feet slung around to meet the cold floor of his wyer. That always sent a shiver through his body powerful enough to make him long for the warm folds of his bed once more, however the prodding of about three noses in his back prevented him from even trying. Up and out of his bed and across the room he scuffled, reaching a thin hand up to push back the now tangled locks of white back from his face. The nine felines all followed him - all of them crying after him with their high-pitched voices. Kyte the flit soon added his sharp squall to the chatter. G’dor couldn’t help but believe that the fire-lizard fancied himself a feline. Why wouldn’t he? A feline flew with him on Tarnith just like he did, he was about the size of a feline, he slept and dined with them. All he needed was fur.

Ten small bowls loaded with chopped hearbeast meat to the brim were set down on the ground. Each time he set a couple of bowls with he’d have to withdraw his fingers quickly else they’d be nipped. He had grown quite good with avoiding the little teeth but now and then someone managed to snag him. This time was one of those days… he wasn’t sure who the perpetrator was this time but it wasn’t anything to get worked up with. It was well known that feline owners would have to get used to both teeth and claws if they were going to live with them. He turned to steal a quick glance to his dragon’s sleeping bench- there still asleep and completely content with himself lay Tarnith. The bronze was nearly his full size. Already he was an impressive creature. The dragon still went out every day with his rider for training. Now that he was old enough he no longer had to fly or run behind Torth (though the runner was ridden at least once a day by G’dor. It was only fair). Now he was old enough to fly for his work out and how far they flew indeed! G’dor had flown Tarnith clear to the fisher craft to show his parents. No traveling between. It was good for the both of them- though his parents didn’t seem to care as much as he had hoped that they would. Of anything (and perhaps he was allowed one guilty pleasure once in his life) the ones that had made fun of him and done harm to him when he was younger looked up to him in reverence atop his magnificent mount. Not one would dare insult him now. That was a week before the death of the wyerling. That tragedy was still fresh on his mind as well as everyone else’s. It hadn’t been but a few days ago. Everyone was still trying to comfort each other, get over it as best they could while still paying honor to the departed rider and his dragon.

The boy detoured his thoughts from the depressing as he groomed himself. A bath was taken to both relax and clean his body. The warm waters and cool salts on his skin was more than he could ask for to ease himself. His hair was washed thoroughly. It had grown quite long by now- clear down to the small of his back. Of course when riding he had it tied back into a tight braid so it didn’t get in the way, but most of the time he let it down or pulled only the sides back into two braids that met in the back of his head and dangled a smaller braid down. The girls had taken to him more and more but as always he didn’t respond in the way they had hoped. He was always polite but he had no intentions of finding someone for himself just yet. He was perfectly happy with himself being single.
After he had dressed, pulled back his hair, and had gotten something for himself to eat he decided to take a stroll. Of course, Will and Kyte didn’t let him go alone. With one on each shoulder he began down the street, humming softly to himself one of the many songs he had heard coming from the harper’s hall.

Drifting calmly on the smooth lake waters, Nae lets out a faint sigh. Opening her eyes, she splutters, her head going under the water for a moment. She pokes Faerra and points at the sky. "Faerra! Thread! Looks like the dragons are getting it, but we'd better run for the Weyr!" She swims swiftly to the shore and tears out of the water, throwing her clothes on her soaking body without noticing the cold of the wind on her wet skin. Leaping to the back of the runnerbeast, she waits for Faerra to catch up.

Mel flying in circles over Nae's head, suddenly lets out a high-pitched mournful keen. "No! ...who? Mel, who?!" As the image of the weyrleader flashes into her head, she lets out a cry. "No! The weyrleader! Tolara! Faerra, hurry up, we've got to get back!"

Riordan had woken up that morning to the chaos of Threadfall preperatons. He ducked around scurrying riders and weyrfolk to arrive at a semi-peaceful area - the kitchens. He found an empty table and grabbed a plate of meatrolls and a mug of klah, then sat down at the table. He slowly ate on the meatrolls, listening to random snips of conversations as riders grabbed mugs of klah and a meatroll before running out to prepare for Threadfall.

The boy sighed as the Wings took off and calmness fell upon the Weyr. Several weyrfolk were preparing for injuries. Bored and now full, Riordan walked over to ask if they needed any help. Just then, Fort's queen bugled, signaling another death. He sighed, covering his ears to attempt and block out the horrible sound. "Who?" He wondered aloud.

Riordan

As she approached the entrance to the Hatching Grounds, Feather became aware of the dragons departing the Weyr. As she looked up to watch, her green flit tensed. "What is it, Ivy? What's wrong?" As the green looked at her, she received an impression of silver rain falling. "Thread?"

The dragons were going out to fight Thread?! She'd better get back then, and see if there was anything she could do to help. Dashing across the bowl, Feather arrived at the lower caverns just as a dragon bugled. Covering her ears, she noticed the expressions on the faces around her... and suddenly realized what that bugle meant. "Oh no..."

Faerra swam as fast as she could to shore, jumping out and racing over to Naeryn. Tao sounded the mourning cry at the same time as Mel, and he sent an image of V'tos through her head. Her face set grimly, she swiftly vaulted up onto the runner behind Nae, years of practice helping her. "Hope you don't mind," she said, her voice still tense from the sudden death of the weyrleader. Tao keened again, slamming into her shoulder before righting himself and cowering with his tail wrapped firmly about her neck, refusing to let go. It had been to many deaths in such a short time for the young firelizard too deal with. He keened again, burying his head in Faerra's neck. Faerra looked at Nae before trying to mentally calm Tao down. "Let's get back quickly, this is terrible to happen."

In one swift motion, Nae tugs the single line from the tree it's wrapped around and kicks the runner into a hard gallop, yelling "Hold on! Mel, calm down Tao and get back to Fort!" The tiny gold lets out a chirp and nudges Tao gently, then winks into between.

travelling...travelling...travelling...

The runner thunders into the Weyr, heading straight for the stables. Pulling him up just in front, Nae takes a deep breath. Much more calmly than before, she says, "Faerra... get inside. I can't believe we actually BEAT it. I'll stable this guy and meet you in the candidate barracks."

Mel zips out of one of the many rooms in the Weyr and lands, slightly panicked, on Nae's shoulder. Reaching up, Nae gently scratches Mel's eye ridges and dismounts, leading the runner into the stables.

Faerra nodds, "alright, I'd help, but Tao needs to be calmed down. Come up as soon as you can Naeryn. It's bad to be caught out during threadfall..." She is about to continue, but at a panicked keen from Tao, she looks at him, and runs up to the weyr, entering it safe stone halls. Once inside the more familiar place, Tao calms, though only slightly. She croons gently to him, and hurries up to the candidate barracks, sitting on her bed, and gently takes Tao off from her shoulder. Stroking him lightly, the small flit calms more, his eyes losing the yellow that had fiercly dominated them. She hoped Naeryn would be alright.
PostPosted: Fri Oct 08, 2004 4:07 pm

Nae pulls the panicking runnerbeast into the stables, locking him firmly into his stall. Gently easing off her custom bridle, she winces as she sees the blood frothing at the corners of the runner's mouth. "Sorry about that... I promise, as soon as this is over I'll come back and clean you up."

Draping the bridle over the stall door, she tears out of the stable and hightails it towards the candidate barracks. Once inside, she takes a deep breath and sinks to the floor. Mel launches off her shoulder and flies over to Tao, trying to calm him while suppressing her own anxiety.

Nae sits there, staring at the floor. "Poor Tolara..." She closes her eyes. "We'd better get into some grubs, the dragons and riders will be injured. Numbweed is the least of it, from what I've seen and heard."

Faerra nods and stands up, relieved Tao is much calmer around Mel. "Yes, we should help the injured. Hopefully it's not too bad though, I think this is the new dragonriders first threadfall right? I hope they're doing okay." Tao croons, feeling better now, and anxious as to why Faerra seems worried. She strokes him, "It's alright, be calm, you're fine Tao." He croons again, watching Faerra, Naeryn and Mel.
PostPosted: Fri Oct 08, 2004 4:45 pm

Naeryn stands and peers outside. "We're safe here... the wind's blowing Thread to pass east. Hope it's not too much for the new riders..." She sighs and braces herself. "We should go and help the people preparing numbweed."

Dashing to the back corner, Nae pulls some of her older clothes from the pile on the shelf. Quickly stripping down, she lays out her still-wet clothing and pulls on the dry, heading towards the door.

Faerra follows suit, quickly changing into the clothes she used to use for tending injured runner, but now it was the dragons and riders that needed her help. She walks over to the doorway, starting down the hall with Naeryn to help tend the wounded. "I hope they're doing ok out there. I'll worry less if I know there condition, even if it is bad, at least we'll be able to help."
