If you want to join the mages guild and the thieves guild, join the thieves guild first and steal all the alembics, calcinators, retorts and soul gems from the mages guild so you can fence it all to the thieves guild. If you join the mages guild first, they let you take all that stuff anyway.
I did Vaermina's quest (It wasn't very hard. It was like walking through a funhouse.) and she gave me the staff of corruption.
It's amazing how easy that made the Arena. I just cast Corruption on my opponent and held up my shield while my opponent's evil twin killed him.

Grrr...I actually had to fight my way through the Arena. But I had berserk, which helped a lot.

I just use my staff of paralysis to zap people and while they are on the ground I freeze them to death.

i used the one area if you have hig acrobatcis and rained down ARROWS into there FACES

I know this might be a stupid question but where is Vaermina's quest start, I just got oblivion so I don't know much about the quests.
