There is a web browser available for Gnome called "Epiphany," it's designed to work with other Gnome components. There are also other alternatives but I suppose Firefox is standard.

This is how I explain Linux:

Linux is like Windows, but with more power. Also its free and gets updated every couple of weeks, and bugs are usually fixed within hours. Most games on Windows either have a free Linux equivalent of can be run through wine, so you can still play your games. Also, Linux has more choices of apps so if you don't like your word processor, you can switch to another one. Also, almost every computer on a website runs Linux, 'cause it never crashes.

And then I usually show them a bunch of stuff like frozen-bubble or galaga or stuff like that.

The more HELPFUL information you give about what Linux is, and what you can do with it along with telling them what the plus side of Linux is then more then likely the will look into it and maybe find a distro that they like and try. So yea the best ones to go with is the wiki, and or what m42a suggested.

The wiki is more technically oriented than most people are comfortable with. I generally don't point them towards the wiki until they understand the hardware basics (Wait, you mean everything isn't soldered on? I can actually open the case?) You have to remember that Linux is on a lower level than what they're used to.

In most cases, that i have personly seen, usually the people that are willing to switch to Linux is the ones that know a computer inside and out, so they don't really need to know about the hardware basics and they usually tend to prefer information about this new "world" to be shoved down their tough. So in the end how you explain what Linux is depends on how much they already know.

Oh. Most people that I know that know hardware have Linux. Its the normal people that I talk to. They need convincing.
