Back to Compound

Somewhere inside the forest, is a clearing. It looks like a small plain, where wild flowers grow. There are fallen trees and logs scattered, and would make for good seating.

The area is large enough to hold a bonfire, and hold privacy enough for get togethers, and parties. Of course, there cameras monitoring the area. Wild parties can't get too out of control, now can they? wink

Santino wandered into the clearing, tripping over nearly every rock in his path, though masterfully recovering each time. He sat on a fallen log and inhaled slowly. The scents were intoxicating-- the sweetness of flowers, the earthy smell of the rotting log, and the musky odor of some creature that had recently passed through. Tino was almost giddy with his new senses, and was well wrapped up in absorbing every different thing he could.

Turq followed Tino, narrowly missing tripping over the same rocks, if only because she saw him actually trip over them. She wasn't making much of an effort to be quiet though so it wouldn't have mattered much if she had tripped.

What the heck is he doing out here? Is he going to run? I hope not...I am starting to like the mopey little emo boy. Hmmmmm....maybe I can talk him out of it..... Should I call out to him? I think I will. Not. Yes. No. ARG!

"HEY! Tino-Bean! Tinnnnnoooooo! TINO! Freakin' heck, will you wait up??? Sheesh!"

Turq chased after him, panting as she tried not to fall over roots and rocks and whatever else littered the forest floor.

Tino was too absorbed in the odors of the outdoors to hear his name being called, at least for a little while. He looked behind him to see Turq fumbling through the forest.

"'Tino-bean?'" Santino looked unimpressed and suggested, "Perhaps you could have tried something like 'Pintino-bean?'"

On some level, he knew this was not like him, but he didn't mind it all that much. He turned back to look at the clearing and took another deep breath.

Turq plunked down next to him on the log and stretched out her legs in front of her. She turned to look at him and stuck her tongue out at him.

"Well if we're going with Pintino-Bean I'm just gonna shorten it to Half Pint."

She giggled at her own short joke because he was quite obviously far from it and, in fact, towered over her.

"So what are you up to all the way out here, little changeling?"

She had just gotten her giggles under control when the phrase "little changeling" popped into her head. Unable to hold back, she promptly used it then dissolved into laughter at one of her own jokes once more.

Tino stared blankly at Turq. Either he didn't think she was funny, or he had heard that one before. He shrugged and shook his head.

"'Changeling?' That sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie." He seemed to have nothing original to say, but Turq did enough talking for the both of them. Tino shrugged again, "Contrary to what you might think, I'm a musical geek, not a fantasy geek. People tend to assume I think I'm an elf or something just because I have long hair."

He realized the pointiness of his own ears as he ran a finger along their outer ridge. "Still, I suppose that studying up on that stuff could have helped me before I was dropped into this place."

Turq shook her head.

"I didn't mean to imply you think you're an elf or something. We really are little changelings, no matter how sci-fi that sounds."

She grinned sheepishly.

"It was more a jab at how tall you are compared to me. I feel like this little shrimpy thing next to you and I'm even older than you."

She wiped an imaginary tear dramatically.

"So old, yet so insignificant."

Tino scratched the back of his neck nervously and gave a small smile. "No, I apologize. It's been awhile since I've been ribbed in a way that wasn't malicious."

Wow, could you have killed the light mood any faster?

He changed the subject somewhat abruptly. "What do you think of your improved senses?"

Turq shrugged, examining her purple hand and red-tinted nails.

"Well I can see a lot better...both at night and during the day. And it's really weird, I feel like....I dunno how to describe it...something is wrong with my lungs. If I take deep breaths, it almost burns. It's like....I dunno. I don't need as much air or something. Sorry that is so scatterbrained sounding....I don't know how else to describe it. Oh! I have an example. Last night I slept all night with the covers over my head. You know how when you have the covers over your head the air underneath gets stale after a while? Yeah I slept all night like that and it didn't bother me a bit. Weird huh?"

She fell silent, staring off into the distance.

Tino tilted his head to the side. "I... I think I understand. It's rather the opposite for me, though. The indoor air feels much more stale than usual." He stretched his legs out in front of him and bumped the toes of his boots together in the air.

"It's just different, I think. I mean, not like a bad sort of different." He laughed aloud to himself and stood up with a big stretch. "I think we were both people that were different, and now we're just a different sort of different. If that makes any sense." He looked down at Turq and grinned. "Is rambling contagious?"

Turq stared for a moment, stunned.

Is he....teasing me back....? Wow....Either that serum really did a number on him or he is actually lightening up....

She began to grin slowly and it soon turned into a good-natured smirk.

"I think I know what you're saying....And quite frankly, that scares me. I would worry less about rambling and be more scared about that making sense thing you're doing....I think the rambling may have always been there to an extent with you but the making sense bit is a new trick."

She laughed and stuck her tongue out at him.

Tino laughed, too. It felt good to laugh, and it felt like he hadn't laughed in awhile. His wit was a bit stale from not being used all that often in friendly conversation, so he had no immediate reply, but he shook his head. "You're telling me. I don't think anything here has made a bit of sense since I've been here, much less anything coming out of my mouth."

Turq smiled, pleased that she had made him laugh, and poked him lightly.

"What? No comeback? You're right though. This whole thing feels like a dream. I still think it is completely awesome but even though my hands are purple, my eyes are turning black, my hair is green, I have webbing between my arms and torso and I have two, purple freakin' tails but it is still hard to believe somehow."

Santino just shook his head again. This entire place felt surreal, and so it was only natural he was usually in a state of disbelief. He began walking back to his apartment, calling out as he went, "I'm hungry. I'll see you around the compound!"

Turq gave him a half-hearted salute as he headed back and decided to explore more of the compound before she went home.
