Yeah, I'm going to the guidance office on monday to get the forms so I can start a gay, straight, bisexual (and any other orientations that want to join) alliance at my school. My highschool is one of the few in the area that doesn't have one yet. I'm probably going to meet with resistance from administrators and maybe hostility from other students, but I feel like it's something I should try to do. I'm not exactly the leadership, make a difference and speak your mind type, but this is one thing I feel really strongly about.
Does anyone have any experience starting a club like this? Is there any advice you could give me for dealing with the teachers and students? Is this just a dumb idea for me to do in the first place? ...Um, yeah that's about all I have to say.

The GSA at my school was started the year before I became a freshman, and I remember reading in the newspaper about how all the adults were furious, and how the school was considering not allowing them to do it. (I live in a small town btw, so that might have something to do with it.) They got heckled and teased, and there was one boy that actually got beaten up. But they kept on it, and said how it was actually against the law for a school system to try to stop something that's within the limitations of school clubs, which the GS(B)A was within.
So eventually, after about 4 months or so, they were allowed to make the club. It's been prospering ever since, and it's actually helped raise awareness and such a whole bunch. I think it's an awesome idea and you should totally do it, but I suggest getting some teachers, and more importantly, some students on your side. If the administrators of the school are going to be snobby 'bout it, then I suggest having a list of how it could help the school. Because honestly. What's the French Club done that's so earth shatteringly awful that a GSA can't be at the school?

Our GSA always came from an unsteady path. Not that we met much (if any) resistance. Sure, there are the individuals out there that opposed the club. But other than that, it was rather smooth. (We were called the Rainbow Bruins once! XD ) And now, president this year, I'm hoping to be more than just a club during lunch. Our whole theme this entire year is : Tolerance is okay. Acceptance is even better.
That's a quote I forged from a Queer Eye episode! : ) So yeah, I say : GO FOR IT! I also suggest getting connected to GSANetwork and other sites like that. They'll send awesome material and guidance.
Bes of luck to you!

Me and my friends were discussing a GSA 'club', but we knew it would never work. We live among too many homophobes, plus there is always the trouble with parents and teachers and whatnot. Everybody has, literally, lost their pride at my school.

It may be a fight, but it is a way to regain pride at school. Fighting for what you believe in is what will bring pride.

We weren't allowed to have one.
So instead they started the "Diversity Club," which is truly the same thing, but with a less blunt name. Some parents got pissed when they found out what it was supporting, and now we have to have our parents sign wavers in order to be in any club.
I want to be in it, but I can't this year. My parents are too busy to drive me, and I can't drive myself. I'll be going to a new school next year, so maybe I'll try and start up a GSA or diversity club.
Nnn. I'm in the French Club this year, though.

sweatdrop Sorry lovely's I never had the benefit of one...However, I find pink triangle posters to be very affective when taped to every door of a class room.

My school is VERY homophobic. I'm sure if I asked I'd get turned down soooo easily. But I think that you should go for it! Just make sure that you have alot of people behind your back & they will support you. The more the merrier. xd 3nodding

Although my town tends to have many homophobes and gay bashers, once my school got our GSA up and running we ran with it, and have been doing it for years. This year me and one of my best friends are presidents of it and we plan to make it another great year celebrating all that GSA stands for. wink
