Name: Leika Marey Sandlar Nicknames: Leika [Formal name], Marey (pronounced Muh-RAY) [Formal pirating name], Leik, Lei, Mare, Rey, Sandy, Lark Gender: Female Age: 19 years
Family: - Father: Nathon Monthez Sandlar - Mother: Rhiannon Ruthe Sandlar (Maiden name, Cartu) - 3 younger brothers James, Bron, and Markom - 2 younger sisters Natalie and Maeva Lover: None Children: None Thoughts on relationships: Up until she was about thirteen, she had never known there to be such a thing as a marriage of free will and that there was such a thing as love. From birth to sometime in her thirteenth year, she had been taught that, as the daughter of a wealthy nobleman, it was her duty to marry someone who would be beneficial to the family's set up. It's obvious she's not interested in putting out. At least, judging by her clothing. She believes that relationships should be formed based on love and compatability, and she is strongly against having a string of odd lovers that never has an end.
Ship: Aurarius Stage: Ship's Boy Job: Deckhand Dream/Goal: Her ultimate goal in life? Become a somebody. But everyone has side goals too, and right now, what she really wants is to be able to make it to being a mercenary. Perhaps she has some unsolved rage from her childhood. She's concentrating on fighting now, and that's that. Of course, becoming a mercenary sort of falls under the 'becoming somebody' category, so it serves dual purposes.
Attire: Wearing clothes that are trendy, yet fit the image of a pirate, Marey wears an open-collar shirt, rather close cut and fitting, baggy beige shorts, and long blue boots. A belt made of cloth that does more to add to the image than it does to hold up her shorts encircles her waist, and a small string of green beads she has had since birth hangs from it. Appearance: Tall and slender with rather pale skin, Marey has a finely crafted face, her long orange hair and spicy green eyes dashing on a shy, yet bold and exotic look to her face. Her waist-length hair she keeps untied, cascading down over her shoulders to hang about her red cloth belt like an orange waterfall. Height: 5'8
Likes: Dislikes:
Weapon of choice: Twin shortswords and her beloved string of beads. She has been practicing in doublehanded combat ever since she was seven, secretly whacking about with sticks with her friends. She found out the power of her beads on her own one day, and has trained herself in its usage ever since. Favorite foods: Wheat bread Favorite drinks: Red wine Favorite animals: Dogs, birds of prey, horses, cats Hobbies: Dancing, singing, practicing her swordskills
Most despicable weapon: A common pirate cutlass Most hated foods: Greasy food Most hated drinks: Milk Most hated animals: Monkeys, parrots, rats, any sort of insects Worst activity: Ballet dancing
Habits: She tends to sing to herself when she works and when nobody is around. It's an almost unconcious thing, and people who have been around to hear have remarked that her voice was a beautiful thing - one of many traits she loved that her opressive father had deemed despicable. She also always tends to finger at the beads hanging from her belt whenever she feels threatened or uncomfortable. Having lost the shortswords her instructor had given her when she ran away, the beads quickly became the closest weapon at hand. Pet peeves: She absolutely hates when people borrow her things without asking, especially if a mess is caused after it. To go along with that, people deciding things for her without consulting her seriously ticks her off.

Leika Marey Sandlar was the first of six children to be born. The oldest and, by far, the most rebellious. It went along with her first, with James coming next, then the twin girls Natalie and Maeva, followed closely by Bron, and then finally little Markom, who had been but eight months old when she left.
Leika's father was a nobleman living in a city near the sea. Their mansion had a good view of the water, stretching out endlessly until lost under the skyline. Nathon Montez Sandlar was a merchant, crafty yet honest, and exceedingly good at his job. He was used to getting what he wanted, and used to manipulating others to get them if they seemed to be a stretch to reach. At the age of twenty, he had travelled with a friend to Port Royal, where he met briefly a beautiful young woman by the name of Rhiannon. When he later found out her full name was Rhiannon Ruthe Cartu, he decided he had fallen in love with her and approached her in a request for marriage. Rhiannon's father, being the same crafty and greedy character Nathon was, agreed immediately to the proposal. Within a month, the two had wed.
During the first two years following their marriage, Nathon lost over half of his businesses, and spent the next three years rebuilding his reputation and expanding his trades once more. At the end of the fifth year, the couple finally conceived their first child. When this news reached the ears of Rhiannon's parents, they were overjoyed, and sent to the couple a hefty sum of money to help with life with a child. The reward, as Nathon could only so see it, seemed to liven things up for the two.
When their eldest child was born, Nathon was disappointed. He was rather traditional, favoring boys over girls, and he had been hoping that their first child would be male. Being the man that he was, Nathon was determined to have a son. When their daughter Leika was three months old, another child was conceived.
James came second, and Nathon gained more money from his in-laws and a son. It wasn't the end of child conception for the two however, for Nathon had only one thought in his mind now - the conception of a child resulted in large sums of money for him. He thought nothing of what his wife would go through to have more children.
The summer after James turned three and Leika turned four, Rhiannon found herself pregnant once again. When the twins were born, Rhiannon's parents sent over twice the money to support the two new family members. Nathon, however, was outraged. He disliked having so many girls in the family, and he disliked the fact that he had only one son to versus his three daughters. Another baby was yet to be on the way.
Bron's arrival brought to Nathon a great deal of joy, despite the fact that his life was still revolved around his work. The man's thoughts were for James and Bron to take over his merchant business when they were old enough. The family was rich, and the trades were thriving. So it came to reason that the conception of Markom was a complete mistake.
When Leika was ten, James nine, Natalie and Maeva six, and Bron four, baby Markom was born. The arrival of Markom, however shocking it was to Nathon, was perfect. He now had three sons to offset his three daughters, and three heirs to his work. Life was cruising for the man now, but little did he realize that it wouldn't last long.
It was said that Leika had had her string of green beads ever since the moment of her birth. The doctor that had been helping Rhiannon deliver her first, and by far the most difficult, baby had left his bead charm on the bed, and when the baby had reached out, she had taken a firm grip of the beads and refused to let go. The beads went everywhere with her, and it seemed she was more fond of those than she was her mother. She would never let it down, often breaking into tears and bawling whenever somebody tried to pry it from her grasp. This, perhaps, was the first overlooked sign of rebellion.
This angered her father. He disliked her, for ruining his chances of having a son as his eldest child, for always bawling aloud at the table, always disobeying her orders. As she grew, they drew farther and farther apart, and he became colder and colder toward her. By the age of eight, Leika rarely acknowledged her father, and it was almost as if they were in no way related. She took no interest in his business, not that he would have been thrilled if she had been interested. She ignored him, and she intruded into his private study whenever she wanted to, ignoring the rules set for her and her siblings.
At the age of seven, Leika had an argument with her father, and in an attempt to take revenge, decided to dishonor one of his most profound beliefs - girls were inferior to boys. She had inherited her father's innate slyness, and had manipulated one of her friends into teaching her the basics to swordfighting. As she got better, she turned from her friend and bribed on of Port Royal's most famed fighters to coach her. In his experience, he assigned to her twin doublebladed swords, which quickly became her best weapon. She later found that her string of beads, despite their flimsy appearance, made a wonderful weapon when used correctly, and her skill at using the beads almost like a chain mace quickly surpassed that of using twin shortswords, but only then by little.
The next year, she discovered in herself a hidden affinity with animals. Her love for them quickly swelled and soon, she had convinced herself of her need to learn to ride. From on of the boys in town, she had learned to ride on his old pony, which had been used to haul heavy equipment around. Her skill soon surpassed her mentor's, and she found herself wishing for more to learn.
When she was ten, and little Markom was born, she found she had a talent for singing. She sang soft lullabies to her brother to coax him to sleep, and when once her mother heard her, Rhiannon had complimented her on her voice, which she had described as the honeyed chord of a nightingale. This, at least, would please her father, and by then, Leika had decided that the thought of pleasing Nathon was a despicable one at best. She was not close to her brothers, James and Bron, whom her father very obviously loved far more than she. Nor was she close with Natalie and Maeva, who had learned to be somewhat wary of her through their father's teaching - or rather, as Leika called it, brainwashing.
On the night of her nineteenth birthday, Nathon had summoned Leika to his room. He had told her then, that two weeks from the very day, there would be a wedding, which she would attend. A wedding in which she would be the one to walk down the isle. At first, she had been confused, not knowing what her father had meant. Then he had told her. A wedding in which she was to be the bride.
He had betrothed her to a fine young gentleman, he had told her, and rich. Far richer than they were now. Leika had gone into a rage. Betrothed! She couldn't be! Her rebellious nature had uncovered for her the knowledge that there was such a thing called love, and people who did not marry for the benefit of their fathers. She had dreamed of this thing ever since she had been thirteen. Love. But Nathon was final. She was to wed this gentleman, whose name she did not know, in two weeks.
Leika, not to be outdone, formed a plan. Her disobedience had taught her many things that even her brother could not have known, and that very night, she snuck a pack of food, uneasy to spoil, from the kitchens and had left. Being in Port Royal, ships were everywhere. She had brought with her as much money as she could find, which she had hidden at the bottom of her pack. She was running away.
She had headed down to the docks immediately, garbed in simple clothing. Her hair, for the first time since it had grown past her shoulder, let down and falling loosely around her waist. No fancy dresses and no elegant waving, no perfect posture. Now, she was just a bold but rather introverted young lass finding her way away from Port Royal.
And her name was Marey.
She had packed little, only food, the money, and an extra change of clothes. With what money she had brought, she found a small ship dubbed Rattail which was crewed by friendly sailors. She bribed the captain into setting sail immediately, for wherever it was they were bound. In exchange for her ride, she had agreed to become the sailors' entertainer, dancing and singing at mealtimes. It was the life, but she knew they would not put up with her forever if she were not around to help sail.
From the sailors, she had heard that they were bound for Isla Olvidada. When she asked where she could find a job, one of the sailors had told her about a frigate moored at Isla Olvidada, the Aurarius, a pirate ship that he had heard would be willing to take on new recruits. She had heard of pirate before, and she had considered it. The sailors had encouraged her, saying she seemed the type to become a female pirate.
When the Rattail docked at Isla Olvidada, Marey and the sailors had parted ways. Marey found a room at a cheap inn for a couple for nights, before setting off to find the Aurarius. .The signature of a pirate.

Friends ...
Neutral Tia Catterwall. She hasn't quite gotten to know her, but Tia makes Marey feel quite at home aboard the Aurarius. Aiden McCallahan. Just a brief almost non-meeting, but at least he doesn't seem terrible. Nothing at all like the pirates she used to read about. Of course, books are biased.
