the first episode i saw was the one when the kid?wolf gets shot and dies. then later the dude in the long brown coat falls off the clif.

Wolf's Rain had a sad ending. They didn't go to paradise, instead they went to our world, which is far from Paradise.

No, that's not exactly the ending. :/
I think I kinda understand the ending a little.
When the story starts, the world is almost apocalyptic. It's a barren place with hardly any food.
At the end, it looks more like our world - pretty well off.
My idea - every time they journey and travel, they get closer and closer to Paradise.
There's also the rather depressing idea that Paradise will never be reached, and so they started over, and it will continue starting over.
Some people think that in a way, they've all reached their own small Paradises. Toboe can take care of the kitten. Hige has food. Tsume's riding a motorcycle as he always has. Kiba's running - possibly towards the flower.

There's a lot of ideas for exactly what's with the ending.

Even though it's closer than the world before. Though I like the idea of humans being born from wolves, and the fact that wolves can take a human form. I completely love wolves, that's why I was interested in the anime in the first place.
