I modified a Phantasy Star IV gamesave (from before talking to Dorin) to see if it's possible to kill Zio during the first battle with him. I made the party be Alys, Rune, Chaz, Rika, and Wren. I modified their skills to 99 of each, and even gave people Techs they aren't supposed to have. (Alys can now chest Megid, Deban, the Res Family, and the Sar Family!) I gave them the best possible equipment (outside of the headgear, which was the next best possible since I couldn't remember who took which Ring, and Rune got the PyschoWand instead of the Guard Rod.), then moved the party to Kadary before even turnng on the game. I set up the Macros then headed off to Zio. It turns out learning is a BAD thing, and the game "ate" the Skills and Techs. that I tampered with and returned them normal if the person learned! gonk So, I was glad that I'd given Alys Deban as a backup. xd Took down Juza in 2 rounds. twisted Now on to Zio. twisted
I used my Macro of Rune - PsychoWand; Wren - BurstRoc; Alys - Nafoi; Chaz - CrossCut; and Rika Defended since learning broke her DblSlash. All did 1 damage! sweatdrop I next tried the combo Destruction (with Alys stepping in for Rika)... 1 damage... gonk I tried the Macro with the PsychoWand again. No change. cry So, no matter what, Zio is invincible in Battle 1. stressed

Odds are he's not truely invincible, but rather just has his stats set at the max just in case someone did that.
Also about the Rings.
Algo-Ring = Chaz
Palma-Ring = Wren
Mota-Ring = Rika
Dezo-Ring = Rune
Rykr-Ring = ? (My guess is if anyone was supposed to get it, and maybe still can, Alys had at some point in development.)

I'd be nice if it'd have let you keep Alys alive (If they had to, give her an excuse to leave the party for awhile if need be, like a bad wound or broken limb from the fight. xd )
It doesn't freeze up if characters use a Technique they shouldn't have, participate in a combo that they aren't supposed to, Rune and Wren went to fight the first Zio battle (though Hahn and Gryz did their normal roles, just not the walking and battles.) and (after the Edge's hole opens, don't know about before then, haven't checked yet, though I may in the future...) Alys can drive the vehicles, go into outerspace, and fight Profound Darkness without any problems (though the party member you replaced for Alys will speak during any monologe, not her), so I don't see why this is the only thing you can't tamper with (as far as I know)... sad

If you wanted to be unreasonably HARDCOAR about it, would it be possible to just keep hitting him for 1 HP until he eventually ran out? It would probably take hours (or maybe days O_O) but I'd be interested to see what the results were.

I've heard though that it is possible to defeat Zio without using the Psycho Wand when you confront him in Nurvus.
If you've leveled up or cheated your way to having Rune know Effess, you can cast Grandcross on Zio and it should do decent damage. Of course this doesn't effect any outcomes. You just don't dispell Nightmare.
I've head this on GameFAQs and I am yet to try it myself but it sounds feasable if you can manage to stay alive since Grandcross does good damage against bosses.
