www.shatters.net/celestia

You'll need a pretty decent machine to run it, but its so worth it. Its basically a space...observatory. Go to any recorded star, planet or sattelite in this galaxy, or another galaxy MPc's away. Download plugins for it, such as revamped models of the Hubble, ISS, Space Shuttle, Mir, so on. Even download fantasy models from shows like Stargate, Star Trek and Star Wars. I myself downloaded a plugin for all commercial Sattelites currently above Earth - wow. You really can't understand or fathom how many there are until you see them all marked. The best thing about the program is that its at the price that everyone loves - free. Into programming with C/C++ and OGL implementation? Its open source. Wheee smile

Ah, another cool feature. Its live[at least, relatively live. It connects to a database to recieve information about locations of celestial bodies. So, its live, give or take a few minutes]. Fly alongside the hubble, thats where it is at that very moment! Same goes for New Horizons, Cassini, Voyager... the list goes on. This applies for all celestial bodies, not just sattelites. Check it out, it'll keep you busy for hours.

Tons of free plugins for Celestia, ranging from Spacecraft to planets, stars and new Galaxies.

The second link is a webpage repository with a load of Freeware Virtual Planetarium/Nightsky/Astronomy software. Its also really neat - have a digital telescope? Some of these programs with sync with the telescope and tell you what you're looking at.

Another site with more freeware software for your stargazing needs smile

I use that software, it is nifty. I also already posted linkage elsewhere ^_^
dont remember where anymore, but its in here. what Im wondering is why you popsted that url and not the one to the sourceforge page or the celestia motherlode page blaugh Also, its not live, you need to download data files to update its informatiopn, it just includes a relatively large collection of 200,000 stars to begin with, and it can arbitrarily figure out where any of them is at any point, since it is just going by orbital elements after all... 3nodding

The URL I posted is the official website for Celestia. I'd rather not post the SourceForge page because SourceForce really doesn't give much information about software. The celestia Motherlode[Why do they spell it wrong on purpose?] page is also just a fan site, which people upload plug-ins to Celestia upon. I didn't see your original post about celestia, so I figured you guys hadn't heard/seen it yet.

the celestia motherlode may be a fansite, but it has links to all of the resources you need to really build a comprehensive model. I dont consider the default resource set to be very thorough since its severly lacking in many departments, most notably the small bodies catalog... I dont mean to harp on you or anything, I just find the official package to be lacking and not really a fair representation of what the software is really capable of razz
that being said, Celestia kicks major a**. 3nodding
and I hope I didnt deter you or anything, I really didnt mean to 3nodding sweatdrop

No harm done. Perhaps this should be added[along with the other links in my first post] to the Useful Links thread?

I love Celestia! Its the best space simulation program ever! and also its free!
There's great add-ons you can get to see sci-fi objects in space. For example a terraformed mars, or superstructures from the Orion's Arm sci-fi universe (http://orionsarm.com/) and a lot more! You can even make your own!
