Alright. As some of you might have noticed, I've posted nothing in the "Stories" section of the guild. Yet I've posted at least five things in the fanfiction section. Why is this?
Simply, I hate my characters. stare I know, it might sound a little harsh, but I just can't bring myself to like them very much. However, I absolutely love other people's characters, and therefore use them when I write.
Now, as most of you don't read FMA fanfics, I kind of want to work on some original fiction. However, I can't ever get past the planning stages. Someone told me once that hating my characters is a good thing because "that means they aren't mary sues." But its kind of the opposite problem. My favorite character at the moment is a complete witch, who could only be mistaken for a mary sue on very few accounts. She's really fun to write, strangely.
However, my other two main characters are starting to annoy me because they begin to seem too stereotypical or unrealistic. >.< I think I might have to throw them into the ever-growing pile of discarded characters soon. And this actually goes for the character I like more, too. I just can't get attatched to any of them...
Anyone have suggestions? Or something? Anything? This is getting annoying. o__O

like i said earlier, if you just can not stand you're charactors at all(or i said something like this earlier i think...) then try writing it with all of the charactors you do like. (for example, FMA) then, you could just change the names at the end. don't make it like a fanfic, just make it like a normal story using their personalities and then go back in and change it. For example "Get back shorty!" They screamed at Ed. With that, Edward started screaming "DON'T CALL ME A SHRIMPY LITTLE PERSON WHO ISN'T EVEN AS TALL AS A FRENCH FRY!!!" as Alphonse held him back. (sorry. that is a terrible example. XD) now, here is one using you're own charactors: "Get back shorty!" They screamed at Moe. With that, Moe started screaming "DON'T CALL ME A SHRIMPY LITTLE PERSON WHO ISN'T EVEN AS TALL AS A FRENCH FRY!!!" as Fred held him back. XD That is if you simply hate everything about you're charactors. But if it is just writing with them, then create a charactor that has the same name as charactors in something you like, but with different personalities and such, and write with them with those different personalities, but with the same names. then go back and change the names later like i used in the other example too.^____^

I usually have the same problem... In my "Song of the Sky" story, I just couldn't like Faye. I ended up hating her xd Gyriph was OK. As for my new story, I'm really liking the characters. I don't know what to tell you.
But, I think my characters are sort of copies of other characters I like, or a mixture. I also tend to use my personality a lot (or some things I do) because I like what I like, so I don't have to "pretend" anything when trying to write a story... If that makes sense o_0

Hm, yeah. But one problem - then I get really weird about not using my own character ideas. >.< I used to actually say my characters were a mix of certain characters (ex. he acts kind of like a combination between Miroku and Inuyasha) and I've done pretty good to get away from that...

Maybe your characters would be more fun if you didn't have them all figured out before you began writing. Leave some mystery in it for yourself, plus that'd make natural character development don't you think? I'm just spitting.

Erm...I don't think I can help you really, because I've never had that problem. Maybe it is because me and my friends actually role play with the characters I use for my story outside. Or you friends can create some characters for you so it sort of what you are use to. That is what I did: Priestist was made by Brian, Hiro from Paul, Than from Sean, etc. I really have no clue what I am talking about, but maybe these can help.

Not_Insane_Just_Crazy Um. How can you hate your characters? Um... I get annoyed by them and want them to die painful deaths? sweatdrop I don't start out hating them - its more of a gradual thing. They just get on my nerves after a while, I s'pose.
I'm getting better about that problem, though.

My suggestion is that you write with them anyway. If you get stuck at the planning stages just because of a problem with you're characters, you need to push past it and just -write-. As you write, things may develop and you might form new ideas. For me, it's really hard to actually sit and form ideas... they come to me as I write. Write, write, write!

Hm. Well, that's an unusual predicament. Hating your characters...No, can't say I do that very often, but I guess I have an idea. If you don't like the characters that you make up, think about what makes you like other characters so much. When you figure that out, put ideas that are compatable together and name the result.
For instance, if you like characters who are witty, emotional, helpful, and kind, yet they are strong individuals with lots of friends to surround themselves with, and you also like young female characters, then name her something cool, like Jesary, and there you go. Add a plot, conflict, maybe a few evil knights or wizards or whatever fits in your story, and several supporting characters and you've got a story.
Another option is to completely immerse yourself in your character's personality, so that you become them, if you know what I mean. Then you can understand better what your character should be doing or saying, and how they should be doing/saying it.
Or, if all else fails, you can base a character off yourself or someone you admire or know really well. That way you can relate to your character. That always makes it easier for me.

I also can't say that I often hate my characters, but that's because I love writing characters that other people will hate. =D But, if you're having a problem with hating your characters, this is what I would suggest. You have to understand that the personality of a person is versatile; it can change whenever you want it to. If your character is boring to you, then change it; make it better. The best thing about writing a story is that you're in control. You don't have to keep anything the same if you don't like it, you can take it out and change it. And as for just discarding characters, that's a bad idea. You don't just throw a plot away because you don't like it at the time; save it for later. The character may not work in this story, but you might be able to alter them to be the perfect character for another story. Lots of people like to make up character bios before they begin a story- That's an idea that I've never really liked, because it makes the character more set in stone than they need to be. Sure, you need to keep things straight like hair color, eye color, height, weight and all that, but as for the personality... A changing personality is a personality, and a perfectly fine one at that.

Actually, Nesce, writing a most basic bio before hand is a good idea, becuase it gives you something to change, adjust and make perfect-like. A complete bio, I agree, is ridculous to have before hand.

While I appreciate you guys trying to help, I managed to get over my character issue a while back. ^^; I think I was going through an overdose of writing or something at that point.
