You know, the very first versions to come out, those many years ago. XD
I happened upon this glitch online, so I'm not sure how well-known it is. Thought I'd post it just in case you guys haven't heard of it, because it worked fine for me (dubbed my Mew Raito, as if you care about my odd, geeky nicknames =P).
Be forewarned, it is rather long to explain. I HIGHLY suggest reading through it before trying it, that way you know what to do.
Well, everyone knows the only way to get Mew nowadays is to buy a Gameshark or find one of the rare Nintendo events in your area. But recently there was a glitch discovered that allows you to catch Mew.
The problem? You most likely will have to start a new game in your Red/Blue/Yellow version. Since there are pretty specific directions to what to do, chances are, if you're like me, you go through fighting every trainer you can to get experience (since I usually start out with Charmander, I am scrambling to level up enough to beat Brock and Misty at the beginning XD).
So, if you have fought either the Youngster on the route above Cerulean (path to Bill's house) who has a only Slowpoke, or the Gambler to the immediate right of Saffron (near the Underground Passage to Celadon), you'll have to start over. Trade your favorites to another version, and start over.
Now, while going through the game, make sure you DO NOT fight those two trainers above until the time to do so, otherwise this glitch won't work. =3 Save frequently if you think you might fight them by mistake (I know I couldn't remember which trainer was the Youngster with the Slowpoke, so I saved all along Nugget Bridge and the route to Bill's house). The Youngster is above a Lass, with a path that lets you cut under him. You still fight the Lass, but not him.
Its also recommended that you fight all the trainers around them, that way you don't have to worry about dodging them while doing the glitch.
Once you have: A pokemon who knows Fly (in your party, very important) Ultra Balls (I used a Great Ball, since the Mew I found was on level 7, not sure if it'll be the same for you, but I'm guessing so) Access to Lavender and Cerulean
You can now use the glitch.
First, go to Lavendar, and SAVE YOUR GAME. If you mess up, there's no 2nd tries unless you've saved your file beforehand.
Here's what you do. Go through the route to the left of Lavender to get to the Gambler. Do NOT walk up and fight him just yet, instead go above him, to the house where the Underground Path starts. (Line up so if you step down, you're right in front of him.) Get your fingers ready for some quick reflexes.
Walk down one step, and IMMEDIATELY press Start. You'll be in the Gambler's line of sight, but he doesn't notice you just yet if you've done this right.
Now, remember that pokemon with Fly in your party, now's his/her time to strut their stuff. Wing it to Cerulean.
Once you choose to fly there, the Gambler will have noticed you. You'll see the exclamation point right as you're starting to fly off, but its too late, no battle.
Once you land in Cerulean, you'll notice you can't open the start menu, so if you have a bike, you can't use it for now. Do the old-fashioned way and walk. =3
Make your way up to Nugget Bridge. If you've beaten everyone but the Youngster, it'll be easy to find him. Just make sure you don't get into any wild pokemon battles before you fight him. That will goof it up. =P
Alright, so you found the Youngster, now go ABOVE him and make him walk to you to challenge you. If you walk right up to him, it'll freeze the game.
Fight and beat him and his Slowpoke. Should be easy. I think he's on Lv. 17.
Once you have him beat, use your Flying pokemon to go back to Lavender.
Go left, to the path to Saffron. Once you pass onto the Route, the Start menu should pop up.
DO NOT SAVE, IMMEDIATELY PRESS B
Once you press B, a battle should start, revealing Mew.
Mine was on Lv. 7, so I just used a Great Ball without battling it, and caught it on the first throw. I have Red Version, not sure if that makes any difference at all, but I read that it works for Red, Blue, and Yellow.
If anyone has any questions, or needs me to explain anything in more detail, feel free to ask.

Well, you can do all that, or you can use a GameShark. I'll try to get the codes up by Thurs, since my GS info is at home. crying

Yeah, my brother had a gameshark, but he could never get a working one. XD He went through two before deciding to return it and buy something else with the money.
Just was posting that glitch as an alternative. =3

Hm... that is odd. Perhaps the glitch is different for Yellow? My sister has Yellow version, but I doubt she'd let me erase her file to start over and see. XD I just have Red, and come to think of it, between my siblings and I, we own every version for generation 1 & 2. XD

Yeah, that's the gist of it. Supposedly, each pokemon triggers another. Slowpoke is what triggers Mew, I don't remember any others, though, since I use Crystal to trade any that I don't have to my Red version. ^_^"
And I haven't run into any glitches because of that. I've finished the game with that one, and haven't run into any problems at all. I did have to start a new game to get Mew, since I had already fought both of those people, but other than that, nothing on the bad side happened.
To be safe, I suppose you can trade all your good pokemon to another version if you have it available.

I've heard that method, but I think my brother tried it on his Blue version, and it didn't work.

What happened?
I was so mad when my Silver version internal battery died. XD I lost all my Pokemon. Thankfully I had focused mainly on Crystal, so I had traded over my best Pokemon.

You can replace the batteries pretty easily. Any battery store has a soldering iron and I got mine replaced for free. Even if they charge you however, it would be very inexpensive.
