So, once upon a time in Spira-land, long, LONG before Final Fantasy X, there were these dumbasses that joined up to fight Sin. No seriously.
The first dumbass was a boy called Jeff, a 16-year-old summoner that... didn't have any guardians. So he had to fight everything on his own, got into far too many close scrapes than would ever have been necessary, and walked away thinking "Well that went great."
The second dumbass was actually a group of dumbasses, all girls, also guardians, who, in fact, had just lost their summoner due to the fact that, um. He DIED.
But it really wasn't their fault. Really. REALLY. Don't look that way, damn you!
And as the dead cripple would say.
THIS IS THEIR STORY.
And it begins... on a BOAT.

Dez paced back and forth along the deck, throwing a blitzball in the air. After a moment she stopped and looked out across the night time sea water. Man I hate this! So much time on a ship and nothing to do! crying
She was quietly thinking before she smiled and looked at Beth. "Heads up!" She called before launching the ball stright at Beth's poor little head.

Twelve-year-old blitzball genius senses: pinged!
"Hey!"
Beth whirled and caught the ball in her arms, skidding back a few feet with a satisfied giggle. She then dropped it and rested her foot on it for a moment. "Aww, come on, you can do better than THAT." She then kicked the ball into the air in a graceful arch, and then smiled cutely and struck the 'v' pose.

Des caught the ball, scooting back to adjust for the long kick. "Well I didn't want to go too hard! Just in case it did hit your head. Your sis' would probally smash me if that happened!" Dez told her returning the smile.
"Care for some practice?" She asked, throwing the ball high in the air. When it came down she jumped and kicked it to her team mate, a lot harder this time.

"She'd gut you," Beth grinned back, and then prepared for the incoming ball. It was coming too roughly, so if she wanted to send it back...
"Hah!"
She jumped back and impacted the ball with a backflip kick, springing onto her hands and then back onto her feet. She then exhaled quickly. It was a lot harder to do that on a boat. It was at times like these that she was grateful for her youth - a much older girl usually couldn't do gymnastics like that.

Daye opened her eyes wide with a grin. She did a cart wheel and kicked it up with one foot, the other sent it forward. "My god! This hurts more out of the water!" She called to her friend.

"You're tellin' me!" Beth sweatdropped, slamming the blitzball to the deck and stepping back as it ricocheted into the air.

Dez jumped and backflipped sending the ball back to her. It bounced once and went deadly close to the water. "Beth!" She called hoping she could catch the ball without going into the water.

"Ah!" Beth yelped, running over toward the ball and jumping at it. Unfortunately, she overestimated, and screaming, she fell over the side of the deck. She squeezed her eyes shut. Oh my god, this is the stupidest way to die ever! She protested internally, and then - WHUMP.
She squinted her eyes open. What the... she landed on an aeon!?

Jieffu leaned on the railing, peering down where Valefor had caught the little girl. "Are you okay?" The scar-covered boy called.

Beth peered up at what she could only assume was the summoner, blushing in humiliation. "Um... y, yeah..." She answered shyly as she was carried back to the ship and dropped gingerly to the deck. "Thank you..."

"Beth!" Dez called uselessly running over to her. She is trying to get me smashed by her sisiter! I know it! "Are you okay? It's just a Blitzball! No need toget your self killed over it! And... an aeon..?" Dez just noticed what she was riding on. "Humm..." She looked around until she saw the young man. "Oh! Is she yours?"

Jessie, who had been off to the sidelines this whole time, trotted over to where Beth had nearly gotten herself a one-way ticket to the Farplane. "Beth~! Are you okay?" She called, leaning on her Moomba-topped staff. Then she blinked up at the Aeon. "Hello~ Who might you belong to?" She asked it.

Valefor flapped his way back over toward Jeff, and landed behind him. He petted her absently, still looking at the girls.
"Yeah, she's mine. I'm glad I could help," he added with a little smile.
