So, does it bother anyone when you see a stage fencing scene and it is horrible looking? I mean, it looks cool to some extent, but it is so slow. I have seen sabre fencing that was just walking in a line just switching whose on the left and right of the blade contact. Even at the Renaissance festival, I was alalyzing it and it was pretty odd. Sometimes I wish I could just forget everything so I would enjoy watching it more. For Romeo and Juliet, i watched the actors (im on tech crew) and if i may say-horrible! so, share your comments about stage fencing and all that good stuff about theatrics vs. the sport

Hn. Some of it isn't very good. I saw a play of Pirates of Penzance once though that had wonderful swordplay. They weren't slow, which does bother me sometimes in movies^^; And their bladework was really good. I was impressed^.^ lol When watching movie credits, I always find myself looking to see who the swordmaster was.
I don't mind watching some of the worse stage-fencing endeavors, but you're right. Some of it really is terrible sweatdrop You'd think they'd atleast watch some matches to get the timing right. Or maybe they do and have to slow it down so the general public can enjoy it^^; I don't know.
Don't they fence SCA at the Renaissance festivals? That medieval re-enactment thing?

I've seen people fence sabre-style with FOILS!
I almost stood up and yelled at them.... >.< I was so angry.... But yeah.. It bothers the HELL out of me.... >.<
Not only did they use foils... But it was a school play.. And they used the school fencing team foils.. (We have to raise all the money to buy our own equipment and everything.. And we're a public school... >.<) Soooo... What'd they end up doing?
Yep. Breaking one.

stage fighting...usually it's non-fencers who have to learn it right? (because we fencers are a secret sect of elite beings who know the secrets of stabbing and slashing) So it would be like teaching a bird to swim.
So that's a bad analogy, but you know what i mean right? They just won't look natural enough. But it IS stage fighting, and it doesn't NEED to look real, just real ENOUGH. I highly doubt that when Mercutio dies he says anything like, "nice touch."
