I'm currently 16 and I have a love for tattoos and piercings as I think that they are gorgeous. I also still live with my parents and little brother (13 yrs) who are all opposed to multiple piercings, piercings in 'strange' places, and especially against tattoos.
The thing is that I've wanted to get a tattoo on my right hip for a very long time. My family has a strong Irish lineage and I'm hoping to get some sort of Celtic knotwork with black outlining and an emerald green fill-in color. (I'm still researching, which is a large reason that I wished to join this guild because everyone here is so knowledgeable.) I respect my parents but this is something that I really want. They don't know that I want it.
Basically, my question is: Should I go against my parents wishes and get the tattoo at 18? (I appreciate all views and opinions.)

I would at least wait until you leave the household (like my fiance is doing), it will give you more freedom & well...honestly...an easier time of keeping it from your parents if you absolutely have to, it's what I did as well...with my parents unfortunately its better to just *do* bod mods & then go, hey! Lookie what I got! & get a short lecture then well...several short lectures before & then 1 long one after I go ahead & get one anyways >.<

I say wait until you're 21.
Atleast that way if you get kicked out of your house, you'll have a little more credit in the world than an 18 yr old does.
Until then, practice keeping the desired tattoo area hidden. By the time you actually get it done, you'll be a pro! wink
God, I'm such a bad role model! sweatdrop

I don't know your parents well enough. lol Would they actually kick you out of the house?
My dad still doesn't know I have a tattoo. It's just easier for everyone in the house if I keep these things hush hush.

WellTrainedLove - I might do that, but I've wanted this tattoo for so long... And you're a great role model!
mintarden - I don't know if they'd kick me out of the house but I'd be scolded and made to be ashamed of myself. Their biggest thing is "And how's it gonna look when you get older?"

Isn't that what you wanted to hear? *laughs* I mean, I realize it'll probably look shitty at sometime, but, well...most skin does when you get really old, mine'll just be verigated colors. And who knows, maybe they'll have some revolutionary way of getting rid of them when we're older if our generation decides they don't want them anymore.

I wish that they had that revolutionary way to get rid of them currently so then I could tell my mom that whatever I got could be removed easily. Then she'd know I'd have it ready...
I still want one though...But if I told my parents the "squiggly lines"...Oy...World War III...

My dad swore up and down that he'd kick me out if i got tattooed, but he never did, and now he's getting tattooed by me. They just say that to sway you. If they would really judge you by your choice AS AN ADULT to represent your heritage in a personal, beautiful way, then maybe they're not...all there?

That's awesome that your dad is getting tattooed by you. Good luck with your job! I think it's amazing to be working as an apprentice in tattooing. xd And thanks for keeping my view alive. I should try to convince them with that.

My mom brings up the old person tats thing all the time. My thoughts? a) It's not our body. b) Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. c) If it bothers you so much, stop looking! scream BrynnDarling If they would really judge you by your choice AS AN ADULT to represent your heritage in a personal, beautiful way, then maybe they're not...all there? The only problem is some parents don't see their children as "adults" when they turn 18, especially if you're still living at home. You lucked out with your dad, but I know if I had said to my mom and dad at 18 "I'm an adult and I'm getting a tattoo," they would have responded "Fine, you think you're an adult? Get out of our house."

I like that. I'll be sure to use those when I get the tattoo. Thanks!
And as for the adult at 18 = tattoo, moving out. Everyone's been saying that and the more I think about it I realize that I should perhaps wait for another year or so?

If it came down to it, no parent would kick their child out over a tattoo. Tattoos now are not the same tattoos when they were 18.
Also, legally, if you're parents are claiming you as a dependent, then they cannot kick you out.
So enjoy your 18th birthday, with whatever you decide to do 3nodding

It goes more like if you don't live there for more than six months then they can't claim you as a dependent. My mom has kicked me out for something lamer than a tattoo, so careful.
