Kira walked through the forest. It was raining lightly, and it caused her orange hair to stick to her back. Glancing up to the sky, the elder sighed lightly. It was only a sprinkle now, but it looked like it was going to get harder later. Not that she didn't mind the rain, she just found it... annoying.
Holding her staff in hand, the demon opened her wings and flew a bit into the air, hovering a bit.
Azrael had been wandering in the forest, it had been awhile since he had seen anyone, not that he was looking for some one. The rain had made the ground moist and mud was stuck between his toes, it was so icky. He wasn't really paying attention as he walked and as he took a step forward his foot landed on an incredibly mushy piece of earth and slipped, causing Azrael to lose his balance, and slide forwards. Azrael flung open his wings to catch himself but as he found himself falling downwards his wings only hit the dark walls of where ever he was. Azrael kept falling until he hit the bottom of a hole about as deep as two of him stacked on top of each other and sunk into the mud. Then, nothing.
Kira heard the light 'shlick' then 'thunk' of sliding mud ahead. She dismissed it; mudslides were common when there was rain, and kept walking. It had been a while since she'd seen Az. Well, people in general. But mostly Az. The side of her mouth irked to the side at the thought of him and she kept flying. Spotting the hole ahead, the elder blinked and landed on the ground, making her way towards it curiously. Then she recognized the black figure, the intricate white details, the blond hair.... "Az!" The hole was too small for her to fit down, so she merely knelt, lowering her staff to nudge the 'bini who seemed to be unconscious.
Azrael was in some sort of dream corridor in his mind, he had fallen into the ocean and was being tossed around, he tried to move his wings so that he could fly out of the ocean, but they seemed... stuck... the ocean kept tossing him until he washed up onto the shore of that island with all the strange children. They gathered around him speaking their strange tongue, suddenly sticks were in their hands and they began poking him. "I'm not dead yet, stop poking me with your bloody stick." He shouted in his dream, although he had actually said it as well. He stirred slightly, and when he started to open his eyes, the blurred vision of Kira poking him with her staff slowly game together.
"Glad to see that you're still humorous in your condition." Kira looked down at him and pulled the staff out and set it at her side. Her eyes flickered to the sky and the clouds, then glanced back down at him. "It's gonna rain harder soon. We should probably get you out of there." She brushed hair out of her face, which had stuck due to the rain. "You're too far for me to reach, but I can probably find something around here to help you..."
"Mhh hmm" Azrael nodded off as he didn't really pay attention to what exactly she was saying. He stood up slowly and tried to spread his wings which were both thick with mud and immediately slammed into the mud walls of the hole. So much for that plan, Azrael then lifted his arms up and grabbed onto the wall and pulled himself up... then promptly slid down the wall. Azrael the noticed that Kira was talking to him, did she honestly think she was going to save him? He chuckled in his mind. He looked up at the dark sky and watched it while he formulated a plan to get himself out of there. "Looks like its gonna start pouring soon, huh?" He mentioned oblivious to the fact that she had already told him that
"Uh, yeah. Obviously." Kira watched him for a few long moments. "Az..." Her voice softened a bit. "Let me help you." She kneeled on the edge of the hole, careful not to slip in. He couldn't get out on his own. That was obvious. And if he didn't get out... Her eyes flickered towards the sky for a long moment. For a second, she thought that she could hear thunder a ways away...
Azrael watched her curiously as she spoke to him softly, where was that dark Kira he knew and ... well, yeah. Azrael sorted through his blonde hair with a hand as he thought, then he raised a finger, "Wait a second I got this one." Azrael didn't really see the life and death in this matter, it was just a hole. Who dies in a hole? It was all just a game to him. Azrael pushed himself against the side, which wasn't very far away, then leapt forward and fell down once again finding himself in the mud.
"Fine. Humiliate yourself for all I-" She cut herself off and sighed. She couldn't lie. She did care, no matter how much she'd deny it. Biting her lip, Kira just looked at him. He was stubborn, but he wasn't stupid. Right? She knew him, and he wasn't stupid. He knew better than to die instead of letting someone else help. ...Right?
Azrael sat in the mud looking up at the muddy sides of the hole, watching the mud slowly ooze down like blood. He smirked and then... that was an awful lot of mud... if someone lost that much blood they'd die. Azrael gulped, that wasn't a sign of some sort, was it? Azrael scratched the side of his head, he had just thought about admitting he needed help... crazy. Though one thing Azrael didn't want to do was make a fool out of himself with all these failed attempts to get out. "Wait... Kira..." Azrael frowned slightly, he did not need help, he did not need help.
"Let me help you, Az..." Kira sighed and looked down at him. It was kind of sad, seeing him in a situation like that. Thunder cracked overhead, and the clouds burst. Tilting her head up, Kira looked at the sky as rain fell on her. The frown on her face grew and she looked down. "Come on, Az. I want to help..."
Azrael rubbed the back of his neck, she was offering to help him, it wasn't like he had asked her. It would be really mean to tell her that she couldn't help him, and well she was the only real friend he had, the only bini he could tolerate, and he didn't really want to lose that for this stupid thing, did he? Nope, not at all. "Yeah, okay... I've run out of ideas." He really didn't need to admit that last bit of information, but it didn't matter. Azrael stood up, as he did he realized how much mud was already starting to come down in the hole, and it'd only get worse with the heavy downpour.
A light smile appeared on her face and she nodded, picking up her staff. She should have considered it an honor that he'd let her help him, huh. "Here," she called, lowering the staff with the head at the bottom so he could grab onto it. "I'll pull you up." The rain made the staff slippery, but it was easier to grab than the mud.
Azrael looked at the staff, he was actually accepting help... he set his hand on the staff and looked up at Kira. The staff was wet and slippery and so were his mud-covered hands so they slid off. Azrael wiped his hand off on his body, but that didn't help since his body was equally muddy. He frowned, this could actually be serious... "Uhm..." the crackling thunder made him shiver as he looked back down at the slowly rising mud. "This isn't good."
Kira cursed lightly beneath her breath and stood, looking around. "Hold on, I'll be right back." She left her staff next to the hole and looked around the forest until she found what she needed. Running into the underbrush, she pulled a long vine off of a tree and ran back, stumbling on her way. "Here" She called down the hole, minutes later. Dropping down one end of the vine, she looked at him. "Tie it around your wrist."
It seemed like forever when Kira was gone, he knew she'd come back, but he felt really nervous with her not there. When Kira dropped the vine to him, Azrael smiled, here was a fail-proof plan. He could do this, he struggled with tying the knot for awhile, but eventually he managed to make a secure knot. "Okay, I think this is going to work." He encouraged her. Azrael... encouraging? Whoah...
She smiled as he reassured her and stood, spreading her feet to get a good grip on the muddy ground. Hopefully this would work. She didn't know what she'd do if it didn't. She didn't know what she'd do without A- The thought made her pause a bit and she shook her head. But she couldn't help but smile... She hoped, and wished, and then she pulled.
Azrael looked below him as Kira tugged on the vine the mud had surrounded him up to his knees by now. Has Kira pulled him up the mud tried to suck him down, Kira would have to pull harder for him to be able to come up and the mud continued to rise, Azrael was actually starting to get nervous if she slipped in trying to pull him in then they were both doomed, Kira shouldn't have to die for him... Azrael thought about that some more, he'd rather her be safe.
Kira bit her lip as she strained to pull him out. She felt herself slipping, but moved her feet a bit to where she felt a bit more steady Her wings flicked open and flapped a bit to help her pull back and she tightened her grip, leaning back. Almost there...
Azrael winced, thinking she would slip in just like he had. Although, she was aware of the hole and he hadn't been when he slipped. His eyes were closed for quite awhile, "Be careful" He told her, trying hard to cover up any sound of care in his voice. He could feel the tug on his body, and was it just him or was he feeling less pressure on his legs from the mud. Azrael opened his eyes, there was progress, though he was still a good distance away from the surface of the hole.
"I will," She called, glancing over her shoulder at the nearest tree. It wasn't far away; she could probably touch it with an outstreched arm. Gritting her teeth, she pulled one last pull, enough to reach the branch of the tree and tie the other end of the vine around it. Sighing lightly, she set foot on the ground and began to reel in the vine without as much of a strain.
Azrael wished that he could help her in some way considering how hard she was working, but she seemed to have some sort of plan that was helping him get up faster. He was still scared, the storm was getting worse, this wasn't over yet even if things were going better.
"A little bit more, almost there." The demon called down the hole, straining against the vine and hoping that it wouldn't snap. She didn't know if there was anything she could do it that were to happen. The rain kept falling, and it made her hands get not as good of a grip as she could have, but things were still going smoothly, and she could almost see Az at the surface.
Azrael glanced at Kira hopefully, he could finally see her using the tree to pull him up. Being with out much to do, Azrael began thinking. Why would Kira work so hard to save him. He wasn't the greatest bini and the world would probably be better off with out him. Not that he was suicidal, he didn't mind making the world a bit darker. "Good job Kira, almost."
Kira gave him a hopeful smile and steadied herself, and gave one last tug. "Just, a bit m-" It was enough to pull him out, and it was enough to make her stumble and fall backwards, landing in the muddy grass with an 'oomph.' Her arms ached; she fould feel it in her wrists, and her wings were a bit sore. But if Az was ok, then everything was fine.
It was just as Azrael has suspected, to good to be true. He was going to die now, that was the thought as the vine slackened and he began to fall. He spread out his arms and legs so that he held himself up, it was only enough to keep him from going back into the mud, but since the mud walls were so slick he was quickly sliding down. "Are you alright Kira?" Azrael asked through a strained voice as he struggle to keep his body up.
"Az!" Her voice was loud as the elder quickly got to her feet and raced to the edge of the hole, offering him her hand before he got out of reach. She was still sore, but she put the pain in the back of her head as she attempted to pull him out. "Hold on, I got you..."
"Wait!" Azrael really didn't want her to get too close to that hole and fall in. That was way too dangerous. "You can't fall in" He told her decisively. He had no idea how they'd try and get him out this time, but if she fell in they were both doomed. Azrael was lucky that she had been there, it might have even been fate, but he couldn't guarantee the same luck again.
"I can't let you fall." Her voice was solemn as she took a firm grip on him. That was her logic; risking it was worth a try at getting him out. She could feel her feet slipping inwards a bit, and it worried her, but she didn't show it as not to worry him. Changing her footing a bit to get a better grip, she pulled a bit harder and opened her already sore wings to catch herself a bit more. "Don't worry, Az." She gave a meek smile and shook her head. "I got you. It'll be ok"
Azrael frowned, "And I can't let you fall." he told her as his body struggled to hold himself up, especially with the rain pounding on his body. Azrael really wasn't sure if it was going to be okay, she looked weak and he was definitly weak and she was slipping in and he was already in... this wasn't going well and it was scary. But he didn't know what else to do.
"I can't leave you here, Az. I l-..." Her voice trailed off and she shook her head. What was she saying? Maybe the rain was making her delusional. She could feel every muscle in her being tense as she tried to pull him out. She could have done it before but she was already tired and weak. At this rate neither of them were going anywhere. Biting down on her lip, she glanced over her shoulder at her wings. Maybe she could fly a bit, just a few feet, enough to get him out of the hole? It was worth a try, wasn't it? Her muscles strained, and her wings tensed as they beat against the wind and rain. Her feet lifted off of the ground a bit. If this didn't work, his weight would just pull them both into the hole...
Azrael stared at her curiously for a moment, he really didn't have much room to think about something like that right now with all the pressure, but for a moment he wondered what she had been about to say, there were numerous words that started that way... Azure's golden eyes gazed into Kira's "I can't let you fall in with me... for the same reason..." Azrael gulped, hoping maybe that goal of not letting Kira fall in with him would give him some renewed strength of some sort. As Kira pulled him up he did his best to move his wings to resist and when he was well enough out of the hole he spread his wings fully and flapped with all his strength once to push them both out of the way of the hole.
Kira strained and pulled backwards, feeling his weight relieve itself as he started to beat his wings. Soon, she felt herself moving backwards, falling backwards, and his weight following. One last pull. She knew, this time. One last pull and they'd both be out of this. The demon gave one more pull and fell backwards, pulling his weight with her.
Azrael flinched as they fell forward and instinctively put his hands out to catch himself so that he wouldn't crush Kira by falling on top of her, which would be really sad. When he opened his eyes, he was face to face with her. Now this was interesting, Azrael's pale cheeks grew pink, which was definitely something he had not experienced before. He blinked, finding himself unable to move. But he was Azrael, he had to move. He lifted his hand to her cheek (which was quite a feat supporting himself with one extremely week arm), caressing it softly, "Thank you. I don't know what I would do with out you." he whispered.
Kira smiled lightly up at him, thankful he was out of the hole. "Don't worry about it" She murmured quietly, pulling up a hand to hold the one near her face. "You look tired." She blinked lightly and looked at him attempt to support himself with one arm before tentatively wrapping an arm around his torso and laying him next to her. It was still raining, and it was somewhat cold, but she wasn't really in a hurry to move.
Azrael let Kira help him to her side and he plopped down on the ground. He was silent, what had made him so scared and concerned, surely it wasn't the life and death situation, he hadn't really given much thought into dying. What scared him was that Kira could've fallen into the whole. That concerned him, since when did he care about the life of another. It was all very odd and new to him. "Are you alright?" he asked her.
"Mm." Kira glanced at him quietly. "How uncharacteristic of you to care~" She smiled lightly and shrugged. "I'm fine, but what about you? You were the one in the hole, afterall..." Her voice trailed off a bit and looked at him closely. "You have mud in her hair" She murmured lightly, picking it out.
Azrael frowned, she had even noticed that he wasn't being himself. "Don't worry I'll be back to my old self in no time as soon as I get over my near-death experience." Azrael told her trying to pass off what just happened to him as a reason he was being softer. "I'm fine, I wasn't the one trying to kill myself to keep someone else from dying." Letting her pick the mud out of his hair, was not something he would normally do, but he felt different for some reason. "What a shame, you don't have much mud in your hair." Azrael smirked as he playfully threw some mud at her hair. He'd help her get it out eventually.
"Oi, oi" Kira laughed lightly and shrunk back from the mud. "Watch it... You know, you'd better get that out..." She murmured lightly. A shudder ran down her back from the cold rain and she curled against him lightly. "We're lying in the mud... In the rain..." She blinked and looked up at the sky as rain fell on her face.
Azrael gave Kira a half-smile, "Sure thing..." He murmured as he pulled the mud out of her hair, letting the rain help wash it out. Azrael looked slightly startled when Kira curled up against him, he struggle to catch his breath before saying something. "Yeah... well we could always find someplace cozier... to keep warm... y'know... heh" Azrael mentioned.
Kira laughed lightly and looked up at him. "Oh my, is the oh so mysterious Azrael at a loss for words?" She considered it for a few moments and shrugged. "I don't mind it here." She pulled a little closer and closed her eyes, her wings fluttering a bit before settling at her back. "I'm glad you're ok."
Azrael frowned, she was teasing him and for once he didn't have a witty comeback. Azrael shrugged if she didn't mind it there then he would stay... near the hole he almost died in, sure. "You must be tired, you sure worked hard" Azrael told her. Darn, he was doing that caring thing again, this really needed to stop it was getting annoying, but it was really cold. Maybe he could just... wrap his arm around her... and so Azrael wrapped his arm around her, just enough to make her warm, trying not to seem too attached or anything.
"Mm... I am. Kinda." Kira yawned lightly and looked at him, smiling as she felt his arm around her. "What about you? You're probably tired too. If you are, we can probably go somewhere for the night..." She glanced around at their surroundings. "It's been quite the day, hm?"
Tired? More like exhausted, but he was pretty sure he wasn't as bad off as she was, after all Kira was the one doing all the work. Azrael rubbed the back of his neck with his free hand. "It's up to you. We can stay here if thats what you want... in the mud... and the rain..." Azrael nodded his head as he yawned. "Yeah, definitly the most that's happened around here in quite a while."
"Okay" Kira smiled and got to her feet "Alright lets go then." She smiled at him lightly and offered a hand. "Where should we go, then?" Her wings flicked and she glanced around for her staff, wondering where it had gone.
"Somewhere warm, like a cave." Azrael told Kira, he knew there was a few on the mountain which wasn't too far away. Azrael was still laying down in the mud, he had just started to get comfortable. Azrael stood up and ruffled his feathered wings in order to fling some mud and water off them. "So we should head towards the mountain."
"I can probably make it there on wing..." She glanced at her wings which fluttered, still a bit sore, but workable. "The mountain isn't to faraway, and it would probably be faster. Plus, it would prevent from things like this happening again." She motioned to the hole and walked closer to pick up her staff.
Azrael spread his wings out and then pulled them back in, he repeated this several times to test them out. He was still pretty sore from when he fell in the hole, but he'd be able to make it the short distance to the cave. Azrael wasn't happy about traveling in this kind of weather, but it was better then walking through mud which he had quite a hatred of now. "Yeah, alright. Let's fly." He agreed as he pushed up off the ground then let the rainy gust catch his wings so that he wouldn't have to work too hard, though he might have some trouble steering.
Kira nodded and leapt into the air, following after him. After getting above the line of trees, it was easy to see the mountains. She could see one cave that wasn't too far, and she glanced back at Az, pointing at the hold in the side of the mountains before soaring towards it, making sure to keep an eye on Az incase he got in any trouble of sorts.
Once Azrael had himself stabilized, it was smooth flying towards the cave once he had caught sight of the one Kira had pointed at. He only had to shift his wings every once in a while, when the wind opposed him. He would be very happy to be sheltered from the weather in a cave though. As he lowered his legs to touchdown in front of the cave the wind blew him a little to the right, but other then that he was fine.
Kira landed in the cave moments before Az had and she felt her heart skip a beat as he went a bit to the right at the entrance. Sighing with relief when he was ok, she smiled and walked towards him. "Mm. Much nicer in here." She set her staff down before sitting against the side of the wall, yawning lightly, looking at Az and patting the spot beside her.
Azrael glanced at Kira after he had landed and gave a nod of his head to show that he was alright. "Yes, I don't think we'll have to worry about the storm in here. The cave collapsing... now thats something that could kill us." He laughed lightly. It wouldn't be so funny if it actually happened. Azrael looked at the spot beside her as he twisted his hair and squeezed out some of the water, then he sat next to her.
"It's already been a rough day." Kira gave a dry laugh. "If there are such things as gods that will never happen. Unless life hates us, which. For some reason, I don't doubt." The elder gave a light sigh and curled her knees to her chest, setting her chin on top. "It has been quite the day, though. Has it not?" She glanced over a him, her fingers twitching a bit.
Azrael turned towards Kira and smiled, "I wouldn't say that life hates us... its just that Death loves us." His voice darkened. Azrael nodded his head. A long, exhausting day it had been. Azrael noticed her fingers twitching out of the corner of his eyes, and watched it curiously. "Is your hand okay?" He asked her as he lifted her hand with his own.
"It's fine, yeah." She gave a light smile and watched him for a few moments before pausing and clasping her hand aruond his. "Though I suppose I should be asking if you're alright. You're the one that fall and all..." Her other hand raised to tuck a strand of hair behind an ear.
"Yes, well." Kira laid her head back against the wall behind her. "I don't feel too bad, I suppose. Could be worse." She gave a light sigh and ran the fingers of her other hand through her hair. "Needless to say, I think we both deserve a good night's sleep." She shook her head to flick her hair back into place and glanced at him.
Azrael nodded his head and yawned. The sound of rain pouring, echoing off the cave walls was a nice sound to sleep too, even though what had caused the sound was more deadly then it often seemed. "Yeah, sleep sounds pretty nice about now... You can use my shoulder... instead of the wall... if you want, I mean... its more comfortable... I think." Azrael frowned slightly, then shrugged before closing his eyes and relaxing into a sleep.
Kira gave a light smile and nodded. "Alright." She was silent for a few long moments, listening to the patter of the rain and watching him sleep gently. Another yawn escaped her lips and her eyes drifted shut, her head gently setting on Az's shoulder. The sound of his breathing slowly lulled her to sleep as a smile still pressed onto her face. Love you, Az.
