Oh yes, they'll pay attention to you. But only because all the others heard the gun shots and are now drawn to the noise as a source of food.
step four- crap self once bullets run out and every zombie in the area is drawn to you

I would have to agree with Brock. if you want extra effectiveness, just... I don't know... shuffle around and make some noise.
Or you could cut yourself. the scent of fresh blood should appeal to all sorts of predators, right?
