Who's your favourite MtG artist and why?
Do you just like one particular card more than any other?
Tell us about it!

Oh this is a toughy.... I idolize many of the Magic Illustrators because I want to be a fantasy Illustrator. I love Brom's work, much of it is very dull and dark, but amazingly detailed. I like Ron Spencer's Use of highlights and intricate design... Rebecca Guay and Robert Bliss... Todd Lockwood and Puddnhead... (drooling Fanboy)

i like specific art more than any artist, i usually think "That's cool art" and not "Who did that cool art?"
that said, aleksi bricolt makes some very cool lighting effects on his art, that made me actually take notice of who did that cool art. i think the skeins from dissension were the ones that really caught my attention.
also, dragon mage is one of my favorite pieces of art, just because of the smoothness of the piece, if that's an accurate description, and bad-assitude of the subject.
and i have to admit to liking grozoth after having it as a wallpaper for a while, and noticing the details in the background that are basically impossible to see in the card frame (like the second open arm, and even the number of total arms the guy has). cool tentacle monster. i was actually looking through van der hagen's site (somehow didn't even realise he did grozoth, despite it being on his site. must have zoned out at some point) and aside from the leviathan, i actually like a lot of his non-magic work more than anything he's done on cards.
OH! and the 9th grave pact art. the guy in the foreground is so creepy looking up close. plus, on the card i didn't even notice the big graveyard behind him. very spooky

I say John Avon pwns lands haha.
I am much the same in that I prefer individual pieces of art rather than the artists, but I do like Greg + Tim Hildebrandt, Rebecca Guay, and Shishizaru (I think...the one that did Enigma Eidolon)

Phil Foglio and Richard Kane Ferguson
the former for his comedic style, the latter for his serious PAINTING-style art

My favourite artist is Rob Alexander. His landscapes capture so many interesting lighting effects, and so much detail that you can spend hours staring at it and still not see all there is. That said, even the few creatures he has done have such intricate detail work as to truly bring the creature to life. Welkin Hawk is one of his best pieces. Because he paints almost exclusively in oils, Alexander can get so much rich texture, and create layered effects to really draw the eye to the focal point of the art. Anyway, I'm a fanboy, leave me be. Oh, and if you aren't impressed by THIS, then nothing CAN impress you.

Ron Spencer is awesome, I love Phage, Akroma and the two Samurai cards from Kamigawa.
It's kind of sad, but I only got into Magic like four years or so ago because I saw my cousins Magic Collection and saw cards that had awesome pictures like Marauding Knight and Urborg Drake, sadly that was why I started playing. sweatdrop

What!? No one said anything about Pete Ventors? Or Christopher Rush? Mark Tedin? Anybody?
Those three have done all my favorite cards!

Darkshock What!? No one said anything about Pete Ventors? Or Christopher Rush? Mark Tedin? Anybody?
Those three have done all my favorite cards! Well, Mark Tedin and Christopher Rush have done some absolute classic cards, but some of them I collect for the card, not the artwork. Like Lotus (Rush) and Nevinyrral's Disk (Tedin). Yes, you heard correctly, I'm boasting/gloating/whatever. I OWN A BLACK LOTUS. And four copies of Mana Drain. And a Timetwister. And I'm going to have the entire power nine in less than three years. Too bad no one around here plays Vintage scream
