Am I doomed?
  Yes.
  Most definitely.
Do you even have to ask?

So I get to my mother's house today, and she tells me she has a box of stuff I'll have to store at my house for a while. At first I'm thinking she wants me to move some of my stuff out that's been sitting there for the three years since I technically moved to my house, but no. Instead there's this huge box of fabric, enough to completely redo my family room. As in reupholster both chairs, many pillows, a couple of those nifty square ottomans, maybe even the curtains if I rework a couple of things. And I practically faint.

Only one problem. A minor, teeny problem. I don't sew. Haven't tried since I practically failed home ec (do they even still have that anymore?) in seventh grade. And I know I should be ashamed, since I do practically every other kind of craft there is, but that's the truth of it.

So am I doomed to hire a very expensive decorator to do all this for me, or is there hope? Can anyone recommend some good resources for learning how to sew this type of thing? Because I'd love to turn that ugly blue recliner into something in a soft sage green...

I think there is hope. Rather than hire someone, do you have a relative that might be able to help you out? Or a friend? I'd check for that first. ^^

And yeah, Home Ec still exists. xd

My husband claims that my mother-in-law might be willing to help... I don't particularly care for her style of decorating, but if she can help with some techniques (and a sewing machine) I might have to investigate further...

I blame the home ec teacher from hell, personally... only had issues for one year of it. Of course I never got to make jewelry or knit in there, just sew...

Yes, they still have home ec in 7th grade. But at my school it's called lifeskills since it also had cooking and that sort of crap in it. We have a seperate foods course, but not a sewing course, despite the 30-some machines that are crammed into the room. And I passed the class with flying colors...

BUt yes, there is hope.

If you find out a simple way let me know, I have an ugly freak gold couch I want to reupholster bad.

I never got to take home ec, I ended up taking shop twice xp

Go to your local fabric store and look for Simplicity patterns. They have "sewing for dummies" patterns that are designed for non-sewers. Having a sewing machine helps; if you don't have one, can you borrow one from someone?
