((w00t! first thread in the new FFVIII subforum!))
Am I the only one confused about "Sorceress" Adel's gender? It looks like a guy but they call Adel a she the entire time... I'm really confused about it. Anyone else wanna take a stab at this one?

well, Adel IS a female. a very man-ish looking one, but a female nonetheless. how would you get the idea that it isn't a "she" and why would it matter?

chaos.ultima.mage well, Adel IS a female. a very man-ish looking one, but a female nonetheless. how would you get the idea that it isn't a "she" and why would it matter? I don't know how it would matter but I got the idea from the fact that Adel has a male upper body. No bosom, (realize that they did show his bare chest, yet the game was not rated as Mature[the pic is to show that it was rated teen]) but instead has broad shoulders and a flat chest and thick arms to match, which were all quite muscular; to go further into this, his muscle patterns don't follow a female body structure in any way, but instead follow a male muscle structure perfectly, 'Adel's physique is that of a male body builder' (quoting a friend of mine who is a character artist for EA). Adel also had a male chin line/angle. Everything about Adel's physical appearance suggested that it was a he instead of a she. The only thing that suggested otherwise was the script of the game, and that's what confuses me so much. Questions come into my mind on that so often; "Is it an error in trancslation?"... "Am I the only one that notices these things?" As well as many, many other similar ones. I hope all these things that I've pointed out something that needs to be addressed in my mind.... though I don't think coming to a clear decision on Adel's gender would actually effect anything. sweatdrop ((edit: looking at this post now that I've done it... I might've gone a little overboard with trying to prove stuff. Sometimes I think I debate a little too well))

Well, She IS a sorceress, so, y'know, magic. or some such crap. Then again, it is set in a futuristic...ish world, so maybe he had plastic surgery? After all, If it can turn Micheal Jackson white, it oughtta be able to turn a sorcerer into a sorceress..... sweatdrop domokun

i think you just read way too much into it. it's just a very minute, and utterly trivial video game tidbit. they say it's a she...so it's a she.

Heh, I was wondering that, too; I think it's a good question. I eventually assumed she was female, just for the 'she's and the fact that maybe being a sorceress messed her up somehow.

i questined that myself and then settled on female because she is a sorceress and they do refer to her as a she. She was evil, like a dictator, so its probably somrthing like steriods. No, Im not saying she was on steroids, I'm just saying that steriods make women devlop masculine charachteristics and if started before puberty can totally change their external appearnce. She was probably exposed to something with a similar effect. Maybe her own doing, maybe a spell gone wrong, who knows.

Oh! I got another theory! Maybe she was born as a hermaphodite and her parents chose the wrong gender.

Most likely Adel's body "Self-mutated" to help her control the Sorceress Powers, though the first Sorceress Hyne was not stated to be of Male or Female Gender...
And it has been shown in some stories about Sorceresses and/or Witches to have a masculine appearence, also sometimes shown in some stories to help describe / show how evil that person was considered to be.
Though I have seen some masculine girls (Had one on my year a couple of years ago) but she wasn't born a hermaphodite so it is most likely that Adel had a large build and with training and the combination of her Sorceress powers most likely warped her appearence due to the amount of use and how she chose to use them.

((And if a Sorceress were to be male then the conjuction of the word would be changed...to the male word.))
