I read this msnbc.com article on evolution last year. I came across it again because it was linked from another article on the site. Whether or not you believe in evolution it's pretty interesting.

It gives an outline on what humans might be like if we evolved into specialised subspecies. One of these is a genitically constructed being called a numan. Somewhere deeper in the article it mentions being able to choose genetic modifications. I want pointy ears! whee

It also mentions conflict with naturally conceived humans. Kind of reminds me of the way Nei was treated.

Anyweay, it's just interesting so I thought I'd post it. Here's the link

Just click the interactive banner to the right and choose "Go to the future". Numans are at the 2 million year mark.

I honestly doubt the time frames they gave. Much too distant if you ask me. Not to say that these'll happen within the next couple hundred years, aside from Cyborgs maybe since that could easily happen within 20-50 years, but even with a possible global catastrophe and religious nuts trying to stop it it won't take millions of years. Heck a global catastrophe would probably slightly speed the process up since it'd get rid of most or all religious nuts and give us a reason to focus on modifying ourselves.

Much of the criticism of that article hasd to do with the time frames actually.

I remember a show about ten years ago that was talking about a bionic eye for people with eye problems. So far, no bionic eye. gonk

Things are usually greatly overexpected. Sure, we went from kites to jets in 100 years. But if you take into account all the thousands of years before that point, it makes sence a little bit more.

Plus, if you just suddenly messed with a human's genetic code, it's very possible they would become steril, or not be able to make fertile children, and as such, couldn't exist as a subspecies, since when one died, they'd technically be extinct.

Good find, Tiana
