Mr. Butler!
What if the killer is the woman who burned to death?
Was the girl killed around midnight? In that case it is said to be the time the phantom appears. Her motives would be uncertain though... Maybe she wanted peace...revenge...?
She would know about the hidden room behind the painting though? Since she was there before the master's family took over the place.
Anyone have anything to add?

The Paranormal may kill you, but they make it look like "Natural Causes", they wouldn't murder with a knife.

if its a poltergiest then it can move things so it is possible with the knife. But i think that that a book case was the thing that killed him and the dappy maid just thought he was resting and tided the books away then later see went to see him and to see if he was alive or not got out a knife to check...
