((Take a wild guess where this is.

It has been established that surrounding Windsor Academy there is a large dense magically imbued and often dangerous forest. Students are told not to go in there but you know they'll disobey, some already have.

Make suggestions and I'll add more.))

It's not all that far a walk from the backdoor of the GEA Dorm to the edge of the forest, maybe 40 paces. That night, a little after midnight, an elf slipped out the backdoor, wrapped in a cloak and carrying a walking stick.

It was Mackenzie of course, and she didn't say anything. She just swept her staff before her, and wandered away from the shelter of the buildings.

Left, Right, Left, her staff swung.

She never stays in one place for long.

right, left, right

Still, I'm homesick. Not just for the village but for her. For the last nine years, home has been with Rae.

Left, Right

Honey, change happens. You've dealt with it once or at least I thought we had. Didn't we already deal with that whole violent exile thing.

Left, Right, Left

Yeah, I thought so too. Sort of, the pain of something like that never really goes away you know.

Right Left Righ-thunk!

Her staff connected with a tree and Mackenzie attention sped back to her whereabouts which she found to be nowhere she recognized. Taking ahold of the end of the staf she tried to swing it in a complete circle. In the process she hit a tetrad of trunks. trees, trunks. FOREST! Mackenzie didn't panic, not exactly, but she did start moving without her staff and she could suddenly hear everything that had been white noise a moment earlier. The movement of animals was amplified as she strained to hear the school. She sat down at the base of a trunk and curled up with her cloak pulled around her and her staff in both hands in front of her. There was a slight wind, coming from the direction she'd last been walking. She could smell mosses and mold and the musk of decaying matter, but she was suddenly very aware of her own scent. Fear reigned supreme over her usual smell. Maybe if I just stay here overnight I will hear something in the morning to guide me back. After all I can't have walked that far. People will move in the morning. I'll be fine.

The wolf hadn't eaten a good meal in a few days, and right now its gullet was growling so loud it was becoming desperate. It had been watching the human enter the forest. Humans were dangerous, and generally wolves stayed away from them. But the wolf was hungry, and it noticed that the human was an elf, and she was blind. The wolf surged on, intent on killing the elf, driven on by its stomache.

Edward had shifted in his room, and snuck out to the forest. He had just settled down on a branch when he saw the elf leave her dorm, and wander around. She was clearly distracted by something, as she had wandered into the forest. A soft snap alerted him to another's prescence, and he gazed down at the wolf stalking up on the girl.

Everything was going as the wolf had planned, he had sneaked around behind the elf, and was about to strike, when something that didn't make sense dropped out of the tree. It looked like a cat, but had the form of a human. Even more so, the thing looked dangerous, from a wolf's perspective. Deciding that it would be better to be hungry, than be dead, the wolf turned about and ran away, crashing through the underbrush.

Mackenzie was on alert and rolled slowly forward into a crouch, still holding her staff. She'd heard a crashing crunching movement upwind of her. It aggravated the nagging voice in her mind that insisted she know her attacker. She only had enough self defense to hold off an attacker for a short period of time, and even then it was designed to allow her to fight of humans not beasts. She was straining every sense she had but was coming up with nothing. The wind was carrying her scent to it, not vice versa. The sound only suggested a sort of loping pace and that it was going away. She didn't want to trust that though. Maybe it was only circling around to attack from another angle. She didn't know if it was being silent or maybe she just couldn't hear it over he blood pounding in her ears. The night cold was chilling her and deadening all sense of heat. Frightened the elf stood motionless, staring straight ahead with widened eyes and a slight twitch to her ears.

((My favorite personal talent. I can wiggle my ears! Not a full feline swivel but just an odd twitch. Some of my friends can recognize when I'm frightened by how much my ears move. rolleyes blaugh ))

Edward watched the elf for a moment, noting her tense frame. His tail flicked back and forth, "you shouldn't be in the woods alone, it isn't safe." Edwards voice had a deep tone in it and an almost cat like trill at the end. "Especially one with your condition," was added in as an afterthough. He crouched to the ground, and continued to watch the woman.

((Play opened last week, sorry for taking so long.))

The voice came from just a little way off, too far to pinpoint accurately with the trees and foliage sending the sound waves every which way.

Mackenzie wasn't sure what to make of the voice. He couldn't be human, no man could make his voice purr like that. Still it was almost beyond any beast she knew of to coordinate it's lips and tongue in such a way as human speech needed. So what is it?!

Shrugging off the remnants of Rae, Mackenzie forced herself to relax a little. She wasn't sure whether his words were a threat or a scolding. Still, if this beast was large enough it probably would recognize and honor submissive behavior.

((Okay, no response in a long while. I'm going to assume I haven't given you enough to react to.))

Mackenzie almost dropped her staff. Holding loosely with one hand she gave up control of her only weapon. Bowing her head she exposed her neck. Her whole posture drooped but her mind was racing in incoherent thought.

"I'm sorry." She said as clearly as she could manage. "I didn't mean to enter the woods. I certainly didn't mean to get lost, but I'm afraid I cannot even determine which direction the school is in order to return." She almost asked for help but held back. If he saw fit to help her he would. Otherwise she'd, well, she didn't know what she'd do, besides her original plan of waiting out the night.

(OOC: Yeah, sorry about the lack of reply, Thanksgiving came up. Plus, I've started working on a book, and this is a delicate thread. I say this is delicate, because I have to work with Edward's feral side, without blatantly saying, "I'm Edward, the castle is that way." wink )

Edward's eyes relaxed, clearly this person didn't understand about the forest. The forest didn't belong to anybody, it was just there. The laws of man held no power over the creatures of the forest. They had very little compassion for those who were less off. This was because most denizens of the forest, or nature to be more precise, were usually one or two steps away from death themselves.

In the harsh wilds blindness would be considered a free meal ticket, unless there was something intervening on the crippled person's behalf. Thats where civilization and society comes in. People keep the weak and infirm alive, because the rules change. Instead of only the strong surviving, it is the adaptable surviving. And adaptability isn't only physical quality. Those who were without sight often viewed the world in a different light. And it is their opinions that the normal folk, those blessed with realitively good health, should keep in mind. Because it often takes many views to arrive to the truth.

Edward wasn't a creature of the forest. Sure he may have certain views about how you shouldn't treat a person different based upon their condition, but, he could never condem a cripple to death based upon the fact they were crippled.

He advanced upon the elf, and grabbed her arm. Firmly, but not roughly, he pivoted her towards the dorms. "Your dwellings are this way, I can only lead you as far as the edge of the forest, but from there you will be on your own." He let go of the woman's arm, and his claw snagged alittle on the sleeve of her robe, tearing it slightly. He grabbed the lower end of her staff, and gave a slight thrust towards her to insure that she would have a firm grip on it, "Follow."

Turning, Edward began to walk towards the edge of the forest, trailing the end of the staff behind him.

(OCC: I'm assuming you are wearing a robe of some sort to ward off the cold, probably something you just throw on in case something out of the ordinary happens, like alien space ship crashing into the barn, stranger knocking on the door at midnight, or being led around by a weird half cat half man thing.)

The smell of cat filled Mackenzie's nostrils and knocked all her other senses from her mind. It wasn't even the powerful scent of panthers but rather the gentle cloying of some small kittycat. It's quality however, did not affect it's quantity, which to her nose was great. The voice with it was also anything but small. Whatever he was, he was at least as big as her if not larger.

She turned with the hand that gripped her arm and followed the tug of her staff docilely. Stepping gently she managed not to stumble as she slowed her breathing and focussed on regaining command of her other senses.

She opened her mouth to say something, but changed her mind. He'd sounded frustrated with her, like a child who gotten lost at market.

Edward dropped the end of the stick when he had reached the edge of the woods, "I have taken you as far as the edge, straight ahead is the castle. I must leave you now," he strode back into the forest.

His voice whispered out from the forest as if carried on the wind, "The forest is my domain. Beware wanderer, I might not see you enter next time."

(OOC: Eh... if you have a problem with this particular line, PM me. This was kind of a clunky exit.")

((Like you said, delicate situation. Just about anything was gonna be clunky.))

Mackenzie called out a careful 'thank you' but she wasn't sure he'd heard her. His final words made her shiver and quickly begin her walk forward being very careful to stay oriented how he'd left her. see me enter? So did he just protect me from something? Ignorant of the wolf that had stalked her, Mackenzie thought the cat? man? catman? She'd never figured out how to refer to him. She didn't even have a name from him. Somehow she'd trusted him and now she was somehow curious. Would she see him again? Could she find him outside the forest? These thoughts carried her all the way to her dorm where she sat down.
