Traditional schedule.

I am presuming that by this you mean start in September, work until May/June, and then have the summer off.

And no, I am not bothered by it. I quite like it actually =)

If he is saying what I believe he is saying, he is referring to how some schools have school all year round. In this system, you get weeks or a month off here and there instead of the usual system in which you work from Sept. to May/June and then have the summer off.

My dad said the summer thing started so that kids could help on the farm in summer. He grew up on a farm, but I don't personally know anything about it.

Doesn't actually make sense. Farmers need their kids in the spring for crop planting and in the fall for harvest and slaughter.

It's much more likely that summer vacation got started because summer is HOT. You can stoke the fire to warm up a school room in the winter, but there's not a lot you can do to cool off in the middle of a city classroom, before air conditioning.

At any rate, with modern air conditioning, having a 2 1/2 month summer vacation is pretty silly.

The normal schedule doesn't bother me, but it's not perfect either. Me and my brother do schoolwork through the summer, but with a lighter workload, so that we can take more breaks later in the year. I like having a bit of a break during the summer so I can hang out with my public-school friends while they're home.
