If you aren't aware, it's an organized event where participants attempt to write a novel in a month. I did it last year, but while I did manage to write the required 50,000 words, my novel really wasn't anywhere near finished. Then, after a month of what seemed like non-stop writing, I didn't feel like working on it anymore, so I never finished it.

This year I'm going to make an attempt at a fantasy novel. Basically, it's the plot I want to use to create a Neverwinter Nights module, and this should give me the opportunity to flesh it out before attempting to make a game out of it.

I'm a little worried about cliches though. Fantasy novels are full of them, and I suspect it may be hard to write fantasy without them. On top of that, I'm writing in a typical D&D Faerun setting, and that alone comes with a truckload of cliches. So if anyone has any tips on how to avoid, or at least minimize them, feel free to share. Also, please share your NaNo experiences if you have any. smile

I've never even heard of it before. But as I don't write much (no time!), I doubt I'd enter it. Sounds interesting, though.

I've heard of it but I honestly can't imagine writing a novel in a month. I'm probably wordy enough to get 50,000 words but in my case the quality would likely be so awful as to be an embarrassment.

I'm sure you can do it though. As for the cliches, maybe for this exercise you shouldn't worry so much about not using so many as to try to find fresh new ways to use them when they come up.

Really the only time people notice cliches is when they're handled awkwardly and poorly integrated. If you look at David Eddings The Belgariad, he created whole races around a single stereotype/cliche but because it was handled so well it wasn't really anything that detracted from the story or even was overly noticible.

That's a very good point. If one spent all their time trying to avoid cliches, they'd never get any writing done. wink

I didn't manage to get far with it this year. I simply had no energy after my move. Maybe next year will be better for me.
