To put it simply: in a two octave D major scale, which note do you switch to 3rd position on? On the A right before the ending B-C-D (i.e. 1 denoting first finger, 2 denoting second, etc.: 0E-1F-2G-1A-2B-3C-4D)...? sweatdrop

if I understood your question correctly...I usually shift on the second D (third finger on the A string in 1st position) But sometimes I do the whole shebang in third position. And sometiems I get super lazy adn don't shift until the A on the E string. blaugh

Lol, okay, thanks, I was just wondering what other people did. whee I'm trying desperately to learn 3rd position so I thought practicing a scale would be a good place to start. Thank you for helping! 4laugh

I think that shifting on the A string so that you are in third postition is the standard way when you're learning to play the scale, but often they want you to do it all in third position, as shadowy_angel said.
