it seems to me that these days, there aren't enough bassists who are in the least bit familiar with music theory, and only know how to play from messing around alot. I was wondering, who else actually knows this stuff?

being in jazz band at school really helps, and the longer i play the more i start to understand it, i know a bit, i'd never be able to teach some one what i know right now, the wording of it is so strange! xp

i've been learning about music for going on 6 years now, even though i've only been playing bass for a year and a half. So i'm pretty familiar with it.

I played clarinet for a few years in band and got basic theory from that. The rest I've learned from studying chord shapes and scales a little more in depth. I think I have a pretty good grasp on theory. smile

I was wondering, who else actually knows this stuff? I'm actually taking a music theory class at school, plus I've been singing and playing since I was a kid, so I know quite a lot about it and am able to apply it on different instruments. If I get through the two textbooks this year (and hopefully Jazz studies next year!!!) I'll basically be able to test my way out of the first couple of years in music at university.

I know a bit of theory, and my guitarist knows none but she can play like crazy so I'm learning a bit so I can get bass parts for the riffs she comes up with.

Wow, the word "theory" really is being used alot on this thread. How about we spice it up abit and throw down some discussions about consonance and dissonance or the musical structures of canon or fugue or even better... Serialism! If not discussion, perphaps we could start up a big collaboration of what all of this even is.. perphaps even describing staffs and clefs, or even key signatures, fortes and mezzo-fortes. Of course, these are all just ideas. cool

That's not a bad idea. Here's something: If someone has any questions about theory, be it reading music, finding relative minors, arpeggios, or even the difference between clefs, ask it here. I'm sure lots of members would be more than happy to share their ample knowledge with you, myself included.

Meh. I love theory, or at least I love it in theory razz I really don't understand much of it, as much as I hate to say that, I am not musically inclined >.< I am trying to change that, but I am failing so far at that -.- I would love to learn it... Sucks that I am looked down on -.- I am tired of being called a shitty bassist by someone in my class that has played less then a quarter of the time I have and believes he's the s**t because he is in a tribute band... that uses him as a metronome. Though it does give me a reason to drive myself to play better. (Three plucking busted-blister-now-calloused fingers and proud of it.)
Right might as well pop a question after that rant: Chords. I don't understand them -.- Not in any way shape or form. About the only thing I do understand of them is the root note (The note I am forced to play in Praise Band... no bass music -.-) What do Arpeggios have to do with them, whats the difference between Minors, majors, suspects, 5's etc. lol. I ask alot -.-
